Thank you thank you thank you for this video!!! She hasn’t tried to eat us since the first few days after we brought her home, but these are some amazing tips that we will definitely be implementing at Wright wreptiles!!!

    My monitor baby is blind, and won't eat unless I feed him with a syringe, so I have to hold him whenever he eats. However, he still acts afraid when I'm first picking him up, and sometimes tries to strike even though he should know my scent. I have tried feeding him with a spoon or leaving his food in a little bowl, but he won't eat that way.

    These are temporary cages for display in the store, and facilitate easy cleaning within the store. When sent home, we suggest a bedding that holds higher humidity for new monitor keepers.

    Logan McEwen Typically around around four to five feet, possibly a little larger, and they are stout and powerful. Like all large monitors, they need large enclosures, eat a ton, and can develop crazy feeding responses. Very cool lizards but not for everyone nor for novices.

    CronusandRhea ZeusandHera If you start with a baby - yes. But considering it will outgrow that quickly, there is no reason not to save up and start with a much larger cage. Good luck!

    So this species grows faster than a dumeril's or yellow monitor. I'm just trying to make the right decision for my first varanid. I think they are all going to be challenging but I think argus is most like a nile. Is that correct? Or are argus monitor just hyper?

  • @666ILIKETURTLES666

    @666ILIKETURTLES666

    9 жыл бұрын

    CronusandRhea ZeusandHera Argus and nile are very intermediate monitor lizards and they are NOT a first monitor unless you know exactly what you are doing. Try a Timor or a couple ackies. Personally my first is going to be a Savvanah/Bosc monitor.

  • @CronusandRhea

    @CronusandRhea

    9 жыл бұрын

    Then maybe a Dumeril's, just as long as the total size is 4' or less; argus is 40% body and 60% tail. I really think you should not have a savannah for your first, they are very sensitive and get larger than an male argus. From all the readings I've done in BIAWAK scientific journals, George Sprackland's "Giant Lizards" and forum discussions; there really isn't a beginner level varanid. It's just a new person should avoid the really big species and the sensitive tree monitors. I've read how people mistake savannah's for being the safe alternative for new owners because they are cheap; nope. Savannah's are one of four African giants that require large eclosures, just like an Argus, and deep deep substrate.

    CronusandRhea ZeusandHera a 4-5' carnivore that can potentially rip off all my fingers and or chunk from my body. Cheap? Yeah its maybe $20 to get one sure, but its going to eat that in a week or two easily. If you want an argus I can't stop you, but from what I've dealt with before they are pretty pissy and have moods sometimes, as with all lizards. Personally I think an Alligator is easier to care for than a monitor, but I don't feel like ending up with a 12' behemoth in my backyard. Dumeril's have always been sweet when I worked with them. Just get something you are passionate about. Your cage can probably be fine but when it starts to get a bit bigger than half of it I would upgrade it to a larger enclosure. Mine for My baby sav is about that size just taller by about 16 inches. It all depends, if you feed it a lot, then it will grow a lot (even very unhealthily fast) just look around and keep it on a slow growth diet, to ensure the muscles and tendons grow right and it doesn't get too big too quick. Again just get one you're passionate about, these things live a LONG time, I personally have a red tail and I expect it to live another 20 years easily. My adult enclosure for my sav is going to be the standard 8x4x4, and I'll keep it in a 10x10x5 in the summer outside, if not my yard which is like 40x50.

    If you want a dwarf monitor, I suggest a Timor or Ackie monitor, but because some dwarf monitors come from Australia they are hard to obtain. A savannah monitor seems to be a good pet if you handle it a lot, but they need a large enclosure. What size are you looking for?

    ConceptHaste please don't put monitors into fish tanks. They will die a sad slow death. They need more room than a 45 gallon.and more humidity than a fish tank can offer. There is a lot of bad information on the internet so please find a good source. Also, timor monitors are pretty lame pets. I can tell you from experience. I have one that i see twice a month at most. They are incredibly shy and if you build the enclosure correctly you will rarely see them.
