You are absolutely right ! My Atara ( asian water monitor) I've had to base our relationship around TRUST and spending hours each day in my office with her just so she watches me everyday. It's been slow and NEVER push a relationship ON MY MONITORS! PATIENCE PATIENCE and More patience, as much as I would LOVE THAT PUPPY DOG reptile lol, she is a MONITOR but REWARDING with years of a trusted relationship!

You ever try any kind of target training or clicker training to get your female Argus to know when feeding time is and when it's not? Using the clicker can let her know "hey I have food for you" so maybe she can learn to not directly associate your presence as feeding time every time. I know Argus monitors are absolutely hyper food driven so it might take some persistence to get her to associate the clicks with food but since they're so smart she might catch on quickly.

How many hours a day do you have to be available to interact with them? I know these sessions should be short but somewhat frequent. Can you do enough short sessions within 5 hours? Looking into a monitor and time available to habituate it is my only concern.

My monitor was a jerk when he was a baby. Very territorial, hissing and tail whipping when I would feed him or change his water. I wanted to install more light fixtures one day so I had to climb right in his cage to work. He hissed for a few minutes till his curiosity kicked in. By the time I finished, he was climbing all over me trying to see what I was doing. That was 4 years ago and he hasn't showed an ounce of attitude since. With your female, feed her, wait a half hour, then socialize when she's not in food mode any more. She'll be basking and relaxed. Also when they are shedding and itchy, they learn to appreciate a nice back scratch. I have an almost 5 year old Savanah monitor that thinks he's a human or a dog or a cat but not a savage lizard unless it's dinner time.

I've got a new ackie, runs around all day when I'm gone. WILL NOT come out of his hides while I'm present. The breeder handled him A LOT... IF, on a very rare occasion, I spot him out, I can reach in and pick him right up. doesn't try to run or jump. About 8 weeks old now. I'm at a loss, no point in sitting in front of the tank for an hour if he isn't curious, right?

@@thesebmxsonly1118 i have a nile too and just yesterday night I filled the tub up and let him swim inside and I found out that obv if you tire them out they become more relaxed. I tried this way and I sat next to the tub and left my hand inside and he would swim to it and smell it and swim away and eventually I’d sneak in pats on the back or touch his back and towards the end of the bath he was tired and he would come to my arm to rest and I actually ended up picking him up and pet his back for a while, I even was able to clip his nails slowly. It was a huge progress in such little time. This is what I found out and I hope it helps you out too. My Nile’s highly aggressive and would bite his previous owner so I’m trying to tame him too lol

That doesn't mean I want someone discarding their pet because they couldn't do their research, on my doorstep. He/she is already over a foot long and really doesn't like people. Very loud fuck off hissing and tail whipping.
