Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Sucks

Фильм және анимация

Wakanda Forever is a bummer. With a story foundation made out of pudding, this movie sinks under the weight of expectations, poor pacing, and trying to do too many things at once-and failing at most of them.

Here's something fun: Why try to recreate the Herb when you can just synthesize a formula from T'Challa's blood? That's a thing the MCU can do now. They were doing it with the Supersoldier serum multiple times, but most recently in the Falcon and Winter Soldier, and the Hulk serum in She-Hulk. You're telling me the most advanced country can't do what some back alley independents were able to accomplish? And why would another dose of the Herb help anything? Simple solution: Have him die in battle against Namor.

I think it was a nice change of showing that namor is a sympathetic antagonist that he's willing to work for the good of his people and be peaceful and make you question wakandas actions and at times make you feel who really is in the wrong. And Namor is not the villain that's what people got them confused he is an antagonist these are two different things. He literally told the queen repercussions and there was, he attacked wakanda killed the queen and if it wasn't for plot inconvenience he most likely would have won the war. And actually expressed exactly how I was feeling when I watched this movie. Something was "off": obviously Bosemen's death loomed over the movie, Shuri never felt like a leading lady, the "inciting incident" was a really stupid concept of "killing RiRi cuz she made a thing and people used it", movie relied on grief/death as a motivation for too many characters that it felt bogged down by it...didn't feel like a natural progression and obviously it's not - they really had to overhaul an entire story around Chadwick's passing.

Many of the problems you raised didn't come to me during my first watching. Unfortunately now anytime I do rewatch it, I will be seeing those issues. The issues I did find while watching was in the geopolitics of the world. 1:France attacking a Wakandan Outreach centre (I could believe this if it was set 100 years earlier during colonial times, but not in 2020s) 2: America almost declaring war on Wakanda because Wakandans 'kidnapped' a US citizen in America, even if it was mcguffin creator. This is just like Namor declaring war on Wakanda because Wakanda didn't give him Riri, even worse I would say. Surely by now the world knows that Wakanda is more than they said, especially intelligence agencies. So why would America declare war. I could imagine a diplomatic crisis, perhaps sanctions. But not some declaration of war. Finally, the plot was a rehash in many ways of the first one. Wakanda dealing with legacy of colonialism by Europeans. Namor and Kilmonger have so many similarities. Both want to wage war on old colonial powers/surface world. Both want Wakanda/main character(Shuri/T'Challa) to join them. Aafter initially watching the movie I rated it about middle of the pack of MCU movies, on par with the first one. But, over time this has dropped slightly.

They setup Shuri still not being over TChalla's death by comparing it to her more experienced mother in the beginning, she refuses to deal with the grief in stark contrast to her mother. I was really hoping that she goes through some challenge which helps her transition to her acceptance phase of the grief, but this resolution never happened in the movie. They showed her being all "I'm not over his death, I'm just angry and want to kill everyone, you will help me kill!" one minute to suddenly just being like "Okay I've changed my mind! I will show Namor mercy, also now I can accept TChalla's loss" WITHOUT ANY MOTIVATION OR TRANSITION. It. Just. Happened. Out of nowhere! I felt like they could have done so much more with Shuri. I loved that they centred on her anger, but how did that anger feed into her transformation into Black Panther? The Kilmonger scene was super powerful because that was the first time I actually understood her point of view. But the revelation shouldn't have been "Oh OK so that's how she actually feels", it should have been "That TOTALLY makes sense!" I disliked that a movie about Black Panther had almost nothing to do with Black Panther. What does the Black Panther stand for? T'Challa was very clear about who he was in the suit. Who is Shuri in the suit? They should've brought in Loki or Wandavision writers to workshop that transition. The Chadwick tribute was on point. But if they wanted to truly honour his legacy, they should have ideated around the symbolism of the Black Panther (not just in-universe but meta for black culture too).

You mean the same writers who also wrote the stakesless Multiverse of Madness, had Loki go through the same redemption arc again while diluting his edge with MCU humour & brought back Vision more than once, now with a spin-off lined up for him that ultimately diminishes Wanda’s grief that they were building up in the first place? You can critique how Shuri’s grief & anger was handled but Ryan & co at least made an effort to inject consequences & different points of view for the characters, the writers you’re suggesting backtracked on doing that.

Black man here. I saw the movie Saturday with my gf who is a certified normie. She tends to just enjoy the entertainment for what it is and then revisit it later if she still enjoyed it after time has past. She said she liked it and had a tear 4 times( beginning Chadwick tribute, Queen's death, Shuri burning the robe with the Chadwick tribute, and the midcredit scene). Me on the other hand, I thought the tributes were good, and Shuri's attempted "arc" had it's moments. But the whole time I just felt kinda sad. Not at the T'Challa death stuff, but at the seemingly bad writing that resulted in Wakanda feeling empty and weightless. I thought that Angela Bassett was awesome for the most part. She was the only reason I felt some genuine grief and sadness in the meat of the movie. M'baku was a highlight and was underutilized. Namor was..... interesting. Would have preferred him to have better motivations and been a more threatening presence. Even his people felt like cannon fodder, just a bunch of blue people in a fight that overall felt pointless. I'm not even gonna get started on how the representation of black men recently has me worried about kids growing up. This movie just adds to that with the lack of any prominent black men in what feels like the whole nation of Wakanda. TLDR: If I turned my brain off I could enjoy this, but if I think about what goes on for to long I just get depressed at the state of the MCU and Wakanda going forward.

Lmao. Chadwick was just an actor. Any actor can play him and do it the same. A double standard compared to Batman, Superman, Spiderman and James Bond with multiple actors. He said himself that he wanted T'Challa as Black Panther to continue, so he wanted him recasted if he was dead. His family supported that. Marvel and Kevin made a terrible betrayal decsion to Chadwick and the Marvel fans and comic fans by killing off T'Challa after one movie. If you want tribute, do a documentary. NOT a Black Panther sequel movie where T'Challa adventures should continue as there was unfinished business.

As a Mexican fan of the MCU, I was hyped when they announced their casting for Namor and Namora. I was excited to see what they would do to honor Boseman WHILE making a great movie. But... I walked out of the cinema feeling extremely disappointed. The writing is weird. The dialogues are mostly cringing -especially Namor's, which has me thinking it was not a super bad acting from Tenoch Huerta but a poor script overall. The pacing is hit or miss. The cultural concepts for the 'Mayans' (a representation I'm not that happy about) felt weak. The plot could be fixed in numerous ways, starting with T'Challa's odd death... Black Panther is a faceless superhero, yet they couldn't (or didn't dare?) write a fighting scene that the panther couldn't survive? Not sure what the American custom is for when actors pass, but it seems to me that you also have to respect the actor's legacy: their character.

Can you imagine the unending garment-rending and teeth-gnashing meltdown if the West cured cancer...and then refused to share it with the poorer countries in the world? Wakanda are absolutely the bad guys but it just points to a massive double standard in how people judge other cultures and places. Wakanda is apparently heaven on Earth despite it being a racially homogenous militaristic absolute monarchy that looks down on everyone else in the world. It's the exact thing woke people claim to be opposed to but it's cool when Wakandans do it I guess.

Killmonger was not relatable. He didn't care about humanity but only about revenge and being in power. He could care less about Wakanda, he came into their country, exploited their technology to take over the world and was ready to kill anyone who disobeyed him, including his own people. He's no different than the colonizers the Wakandians tried to hide from and didn't want to help. He had them burn all the purple herbs so that no one could be in power or have the Black Panther mantle except him and he died full of pride, bitterness, anger and hate. He was a horrible character and nothing to be celebrated or admired for. Do I sympathize with his character for what happened to him as a child? Absolutely, but it doesn't excuse or justify killing people on a revenge tour to kill a cousin who had no idea you existed or didn't contribute to your unfortunate upbringing. Plus, in the process, he caused the Wakandian people to fight and turn on each other in the third act of the first movie based on his anger and hatred.

This is basically a superhero movie without it's superhero. It's a movie full of secondary characters (on the Black Panther side of the story.. I thought Namor was actually done decently). I just didn't feel a sense of connection nor was I excited when Shuri became a version of Black panther. It was like when Captain America handed his shield to Sam and asked him how it felt..and Sam said "like it belongs to someone else". I didn't buy Shuri becoming black panther, not one bit... it felt as though she was a secondary character that was borrowing the suit. It also felt rushed, when it didn't have to be.. I understand that because Chadwick passed away, they had to figure out a replacement. But I honestly think recasting black panther would have been the better move. Something Chadwick's own family thought was the best course of action.. I saved the best for last (sarcasm).. Iron heart was the literal definition of a complete non-essential character. She did NOTHING to help move along the story. The only reason she was even in the movie was to introduce her for her Disney plus series coming up. But even so, the writing for this character was horrible at best. And now I have no interest whatsoever in watching that series when it hits D-plus

Was scrolling thru looking for an Easter egg vid on wakanda forever as I like to see if and what I missed, and I saw ur title and decided to give it a watch. I guess I can see what u are speaking about but personally I enjoyed it. Yeh it's got a lot of things going on, that at times makes it a little pandering and disjointed but unlike comics from which all of these movies are ultimately drawn they have to. I have been going to see marvel and DC movies with my son( now 12) for years now and honestly we just go to be entertained and we both thought this movie accomplished that. Obviously not the best product out of the marvel studios but not thor dark world either

I think the best part about this is the people in the comments are coping so much despite the fact he isn’t even saying it’s a horrible movie. He even said it’s one of the better newer MCU movies. The movie itself was a disappointment that didn’t even know what it wanted to do and let’s be honest we expected it, the movie has had several rewrites due to sad the loss of Chadwick.

Ultimately, the thing I will always wonder most is would recasting the T'Challa role brough more people into theatres just out of curiosity of the new casting than playing the "grief card", as it looks like the movie is not gonna come close to the first movie's numbers... But you also have to question the fact that they didn't delay production(or at least not by much) after the lead actor died and they decided not to recast the role, especially since it's not like it's a movie that absolutely had to be in Phase 4...

To be fair, the original black panther was mostly successful because the advertising was largely political, while the movie itself was pretty bland, that angle drew a lotta customers….. regardless, while it would’ve been interesting, I really doubt getting a replacement for shock value would fill those seats like that again. Originally this movie was meant to be one of the big successes of Phase 4, with Chadwick becoming one of the main names in the MCU much like RDJ or Chris Evans. Very sad how things turned out, we ended up with an okay Shuri Panther story, when I was hoping for an amazing Chadwick Panther story. Having to rewrite the script and the short production time you mentioned might’ve had something to do with the quality of it…..who knows

Like even in the comic books you could not replace Black panther t'challa for long what was it like five issues where they had his sister as Black panther and then they brought him back? And Chadwick boseman's death was unforeseen and unfortunate they had no plans for replacements for him in the works you can see that plain as day I haven't even watched the movie but I already can guess how the movie is going to be because one you do not have Chadwick in it which is depressing two you can just look at the last 3 years of movies and guess how it's going to go.

What the antagonist gave to the protagonist to show alliance, the protagonist used to gain the power she needed to defeat said antagonist😱but also it could be seen as poetic in the sense that if namkr hadnt given that to shuri, she would have never gotten the power to defeat namor, and form an alliance, and wakanda wouldve been destroyed

Imagine Shuri, after making Namor yield and see the error of his ways, dying from the stabwound. Not only that, when Namor attacks Wakanda, he doesn`t just level a small shore but comepletely annihilates a large portion of the city. With this the Queen is dead, Wakanda has made huge urban and (in the final battle) military losses and with Shuri lost its new protector. Wakanda is more vulnerable then ever and is not able to properly defend itself against the world anymore, which is closing in further on the country, for the Vibranium. This could be a huge setup for the future and would give the title of the movie `Wakanda forever`a whole new meaning. The country is crumbling fast, but the remnant people are holding Wakanda `alive in their hearts`, bringing back a line from another movie we know: "Home is not a place, it`s the people."

Great review man, and you’re not gonna catch any flack from me. This movie was bad imo. The writing was just…no. I have to disagree with you about something you said though: they tried to “honor” Chadwick Boseman, but they dishonored T’Challa. They basically said that he died because he refused to ask for help about his illness (alluding to how Boseman hadn’t really told anyone about his cancer). Couldn’t help reading between the lines about that. Or maybe that’s just me. Also, T’Challa was superhuman, with a healing factor, and the head of the most technologically advanced nation on the planet. In the previous movie, Ross was fatally shot, and they completely healed him OVERNIGHT. They cryogenically froze Bucky for an unspecified amount of time in order to de program him. And, let’s not forget that T’Challa had made allies/friends with geniuses, gods , and reality warpers. One of which is an actual DOCTOR. Couldn’t call that guy to help your brother/king? And how come no Avengers were at the funeral?? This movie was meant to show that Wakanda, Marvel and the world doesn’t necessarily need T’Challa. Yeah, fine, we’ll give you a Black Panther, here you go, his sister Shuri. Who, like you said, looked absolutely ridiculous in that outfit. It was a mess. Honestly, this wasn’t a Black Panther movie. This wasn’t even a Wakanda movie; considering how weak Wakanda looked. They had no military, and they were completely whooped by pretty much the Pandorans from Avatar. This is the military that held the line against Thanos and his horde of monsters, aliens and the Black Order? The bulk of earth’s defense was the Wakandan army. Where were those amazing warriors? And they were beaten by an army that hasn’t had to fight a major battle since the days of the conquistadors. Make that make sense. I disliked this movie. It shouldn’t have been made. Coogler should’ve stepped down like Zach Snyder, shelved it for a couple more years, and recast the role. Instead, we got this mess of a film. What a way to end phase 4, and to muck up one of the greatest Black superhero’s legacy’s.

Namor is a mutant, and he's not 5'6". he's fought Hulk and the Thing. His character should have been in the eternals, where the main ending is on a island surrounded by water. Did not care about any of the characters, apparently the writers forgot in the previous movie, T'Challa gave Shuri a bunch of property in a rundown part of town to develop tech using the people in the area. That sounds interesting, this script is written by someone who never read a comic book.
