    How I would have fixed She-Hulk: 1. Cast an actually tall, athletic woman to play She-Hulk, use practical effects to make her look even bigger compared to the other actors, and use CG to "Steve Rogers" her down to "Jen size." Why? Because, in the comics, Jen actually prefers her Hulk form and feels more confident as a Hulk, so she stays Hulk all the time. 2. Make THAT her story arc. In the beginning of the series, she hates being Hulk, and the series is about her accepting it and she becomes She-Hulk 24/7. 3. I like your idea about the Abomination case being one long arc. Let's keep that. Also, the complication that she may end up having to defend Wong as well for breaking Abomination out of prison. 4. Fewer 4th wall breaks. I know Jen does it in the comics, but the MCU just acquired Deadpool, so let's not overdo it. 5. Write an actually compelling character and story. 6. Hire a legal consultant for the court drama part of the story. 7. Don't. Let. She-Hulk. Twerk.

    Wish you had a short section talking about Jen's original character in the comic, which is what makes this the biggest tragedy in Marvel. The character of Jen Walters is actually extremely charming, she's a wise-cracking sass much like Peter Parker. She loves her cousin Bruce, who she is grateful to have been saved by, as her transformation into She-hulk actually was a huge boost to her life. She loved being She-hulk, and it empowered her. She didn't care if people thought she was monstrous, weird, or a freak. She was meant to be the opposite of Bruce. A woman who wanted to be seen, and found, and not have to hide who she truly was.

Main issue is the writing. Tatiana Maslany gave a good performance and has the marvel charm that an actor needs to fit in. Brie Larson does not have that charm. When she hulk is in movies like secret wars with other people writing it people will start to like her more because she is likable. Captain Marvel is hated all around because she is just not a likable person

    So they’re just going to ignore that time the apple store employee called Steve Rogers a “specimen” as a compliment? Like, yeah, that’s fine, but when it happens to Jen (who repeatedly talks about Steve like a piece of meat), it’s a cardinal sin. Okay, cool.

  • @Luke_SkywaIker

    Tbf the context is very obviously different. Its not perverted at all to compliment a bro whose obviously worked hard on his physique, and is going on a honeymoon with his hot wife (from the employee’s perspective). It was just a nerdy compliment from a somewhat socially awkward dude - a response from Natasha’s sarcastic “you must be twins” I don’t like she hulk, not trying to defend the show, but calling a woman a “specimen” on your first date is a creepy red flag in itself. It’s plain to see why Jen (or any self respecting woman) would be grossed out and even troubled by that remark, in that context. A better comparison would be that one h*rny female officer in First Avenger who took advantage of Cap (who was clearly uncomfortable in the situation). Both the officer and “toxic man 3” had little regard for the respective main character and tried to take advantage of them, showing how easily both genders can be harassed. I appreciate that the early mcu at least tried to show a female taking advantage of a strong man like Cap bc that shit happens to everyone unfortunately

    @@Luke_SkywaIker I generally agree with what you're saying in this comment. But I do think the scene in CA:TFA proves there is a slight double standard. After all, unlike Jen - who gets to be angry about her sexual harrassment, Steve is victim-blamed, slut-shamed, and physically attacked by his love interest. And we know that the Marvel writers don't think Peggy's reaction would be acceptable if the genders were reversed because in the same movie Steve also wrongfully assumes Peggy is involved with Howard and he doesn't attack her for it. They also don't have a role-reversal of this scene in the Captain Carter episode of the "What If" series.

    @@sadboijokescase in point, in the original, Adam warlock with the help of Silver surfer which were 2 of the fastest beings in MCU stole the gauntlet off of Thanos's hand while he was distracted in battle by almost the entirety of MCUs superheroes after which Dr.Doom fought them and took it into his possession, sadly none of which happened on screen even the battle was changed. Second, Thanos killed off half of the populous and in return to balance the universe he created evil doppelgangers of all superheroes, which is how Carnage, (Spiderman/Venom's evil-twin because both were once joined) was created from them by Thanos. I mean Disney even screwed Adam warlock's character soo bad that he went from a near omniscient, egotistical, know it all, to a clumsy, dim-witted, test tube baby incapable of self reliance or cognition. What a great review. I couldn't finish this abomination of a show (pun intended) so the fact that you watched the entire show without dying gives me Mad Respect for you. I couldn't imagine finishing the show, so watching this review, I'm glad I didn't finish this show. You make wonderful points and it shows how the writers and producers failed an interesting character in the comics, and made her into the most unlikeable character in the existence of film/TV. I love your examples of films/shows too on good writing and execution, as it shows the writers of this mess of a show definitely feel so bitter towards their audience rather than telling a good story. Speaking of unlikeable characters but growing to love them, A good night and day difference is an actually good, funny, and snarky female character: April Ludgate from Parks and Rec. She could come across as unlikeable to some viewers, but as viewers get to know her better, there are more layers to her than her just being snarky and deadpan (like when she gives Andy Dyer the Jersey he wanted for Christmas). Jennifer Walters in Attorney at Law, however, does not have ANY moments like that throughout the show. She thinks any male is like you said, either against her or stupid. Funny enough, before they announced the show, I thought Aubrey Plaza would've been a fantastic She Hulk based on She Hulk's comic personality, but looking back, I'm glad that they didn't cast Aubrey because Aubrey deserves ALOT better than a shitstorm like She Hulk: Attorney at Law. (I saw where you really enjoyed Emily the Criminal, which is a fantastic movie in my opinion). So yeah, I really enjoyed your review Cynic, which is ALOT more than I can say of the episodes I watched of Attorney at Law. Keep up the great work.

    The main issue with most of these female lead, writer self insert character stories revolves around one thing… They don’t get character arcs because that would force the writer to put her character(herself) down in some way. A character has to fall down in some way before they can raise back up. That’s the foundation of any good character arc, but it can never happen to any of these strong female characters because that would mean that first need to be knocked down, and the writers can’t have that.

The die hard fans are completely behind the times on this stuff. Warning bells were breaking out of flashing red enclosures months ago trying to call attention to the collapse of the MCU and some fans are oblivious to it. It's started canabalizing the nostalgia created by lots of the original films to power the low effort TV shows and that's the last thing that a fan would normally want. If they aren't careful, "Marvel" could become a hated household word.

    It’s funny because Hollywood used to make strong female leads better than they have in recent years. It’s almost like when they specifically try to make them a strong female boss bitch, they fail, but when they didn’t really try and were just focused on making a decent movie, they succeeded. Lara Croft is a good strong female character because they focused on making a good movie and character, and didn’t focus on the fact that she was a women. She went through trials and hardships, she wasn’t insufferable and immediately amazing at everything. I just don’t understand how people nowadays think that these “strong females characters” are good. I would NEVER want my daughter to look up to a female character who puts men down, is completely obsessed with herself past the point of general confidence, is born amazing at fighting or whatever and never had to work for it. A good lesson would’ve been if She Hulk did allow Hulk to help her. Boom, teaches kids and everyone that you can’t immediately be great at everything, and seeking help from people with more experience than you is invaluable. But no, teach them to be conceded assholes who never have to work for anything and overshadow every male no matter what.

    Beautiful video that touches RIGHT on the subject matter at hand, especially around the 10:00 mark. There's a wild misunderstanding in Hollywood writing these days that the only way to get an audience to connect with movie characters, they have to relate to them by means of gender, race, or sexual orientation. This is not true. A man can watch Alien and find ways to connect to Ellen Ripley, just like a woman can watch a Spider-Man movie and relate to Peter Parker. Sadly, the writers of today can't understand this. Excellent video! Gave it a thumbs up!

  • @NebLleb

    @NebLleb

    THIS. I've also seen the misunderstanding affect Japanese media, in this case, the new Mobile Suit Gundam show. Witch from Mercury is made by and for people who don't get Gundam. The concept of a female protagonist however, SHOULD have worked because Mobile Suit Gundam has tons of memorable female characters in the franchise. Sayla Mass from the original show? Marida Cruz from the Unicorn OVA? Cagalli Yula [Atha] from SEED? All of these characters could be relatable to male viewers, just like how Amuro Ray, Banagher Links and even Kira Yamato could be rooted for by women. However, Witch from Mercury didn't get this, and instead, under the belief that "GUNDAM IS FOR OLD FOLKS SO LET'S UPDATE IT FOR MODERN AUDIENCES!", decided to make a High School Lesbian Romance, which is just UUUUUGH... so frustrating and hateful. It's quite telling that now, the fanbase is suffering from an invasion of fake "fans" who misunderstand the franchise like how the staff do, and that there's no safe haven. Witch from Mercury used the Hollywood woke misunderstanding, and it is damaging the franchise.

    I think a far better comparison than The Office would be Peacemaker.. He's a dude that has some bad personality defects, from his upbringing and other factors, but at his core, he is a good person and genuinely wants to be a hero. Throughout the show's first season, we learn where he came, how rotten his father is, the trauma from his past, and how all of that molded him into the person he is, but also it shows him grow and learn from both his victories and his failures, and in the end he finds redemption. He's still not perfect, but he comes a long way, gaining friends, developing clearer morals and values, rising above his villainous father's abuse, and becoming the hero he had always sought to be. On top of all of that, the show was fucking hilarious.. Basically every thing She-Hulk did terribly, Peacemaker did it right.

You'd think that, after the events of Phase 4, the UN would want even more regulations and restrictions placed on superpowered individuals, because in the eyes of the average person, they clearly can't control themselves. And after what Wanda did in Westview - *_enslaving an entire town of over 3,000 people_* - and what Jennifer did in Episodes 6 and 8, which was start a fight at a *wedding reception hall* and *destroy the top level of a parking garage and multiple cars,* public opinion of superpowered individuals would be *down.* And now this finale has made the entirety of She-Hulk season 1 pointless.
