I think a lot of people in other countries are nicer when you speak the language or TRY to speak the language and will be helpful in general because they see you putting effort into knowing them and their language and culture...

Over my almost 50 years as a student, and then a professor (mathematics -- thanks for asking!) I had friends, colleagues, and students from Haiti, Mexico, Belize, Italy, Iran, Turkey, Bulgaria, Serbia, Russia, Sweden, Gambia, Nigeria, Ghana, Algeria, Egypt, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Kenya, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, China, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Malaysia, Indonesia, and New Zealand. I have never failed to feel curiosity about people who look or speak differently from me. You look and (on your posts) speak differently from most of the people around you. To me it is very natural some would rejoice at the opportunity to "touch the wider world" by communicating with you. I got the same treatment in some of the smaller places in my wife's home country (Indonesia).

It's honestly interesting how melanin works I'm a light brown shade and have never been burned by the sun I only get darker whilst my white friends always turn bright red and sometimes even their skin peels 😭 even some of my really dark friends burn.

I surmise that black foreigners are less commonly seen in sichuan than other bustling international trade cities like Guangzhou so the locals behaviour tend to be more of curiosity and direct approach. Also, black or purple grain rice is a healthier alternative to the common white grain rice; better suited staple substitute for diabetics. It is available in most Asian/international supermarkets in the west.
