You can do everything right and still not get picked. These organizations pick bad members all the time because of who they were cool with. That's why you see so many inactive members. Really you just have to get cool with the people in that chapter because it's all going to come down to a hand vote and you want as many votes as possible. Start going to the events, get phone numbers, be cordial and get to know the members, but don't bug them. A person with a 2.8 GPA will get picked over a person with a 4.0 just because they plugged themselves in with people who matter in the organization.

At my school, before you even think about joining the NPHC, though have to go to a meeting where one of the advisors gives you a run down of the standards and qualifications of the organization. I think it was really helpful in giving people an idea of what they really wanted to do and if they really wanted to join.

Yea, they have them all campus' for any sorority/fraternity. It wasn't mandatory at mine but it was helpful to go so you knew what exactly the interest of the org was and to meet chairs. But they give you the run down of what is expected of you and what they stand for and so on.

Me and my friend wanted to pledge delta. An Aka came to visit us. She told my friend she "looked like an aka". My friend asked her what does an Aka look like and told her she wanted to pledge delta. She told us that Deltas were ratchet and she couldn't explain to us what an Aka looks like Lol. We were like damn. We didn't pledge either. We didn't pledge at all where we was because no one gave us a reason to.

Girl, thank you for putting this information out there. I have been a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. for a very long time. I was introduced to the organization by my older sister; however, she even stated that before I join any sorority that I should do my own research and make sure that their values lined up with my and what I stood for personally. I encourage anyone looking to become apart of the Divine Nine to do your OWN research and watch the organizations on the college campus and attend their events. Learn about the members and the organization itself before joining because this is a lifelong commitment.

I, too, am a proud member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. since 1988. when my sister expressed an interest in Zeta, I made her attend ALL organizations' interest meetings, to ensure Zeta was the right organization for her. after attending those meetings, she stood firm in her initial choice! I love Zeta and my fellow sister greeks. unity is the key to success, as we all essentially seek the same things!

I'm not apart of sorority but I believe if these members truly understood initial purpose of these organizations they wouldn't disrespect or abuse each other. They were meant to uplift, network etc. Somewhere along the way the message and purpose got lost. Now we see members abusing potential members because "it was done to them. We have to do better.

CreativeDiva12I think the mis conception is that this is okay, unknowingly dealing with "ancient spirits" and free masonary. Yes there are christians involved. ..... because some 1, has convinced them its okay. Jesus refers to this as the blind leading the blind. I just so happen to be a man. and seeing so many men fall into the same mind state of followers in local communites, drugs. robbing. etc just because some 1 convinced them it is okay. now what you're doing is not illegal. in the eyes of the law. but it is immoral in terms of the house of the "" Lord. getting ppl. to join a secret society is not soul winning "" for the Lord. Jesus. the deciever always. .... makes ppl, think something is okay when its not. aka Lucifer. ancient wisdom and free masonary linages are " Satanic. the same way he has convinced ppl same sex marriage is okay. and lots of other things. 1 reason the world is falling apart. .... these pledges and oaths are demonic.

I will never for the life of me understand why people feel so DESPRATELY they want to be in sorority! I get it's nice, and I think that you have the opportunity to enhance your own life and the lives of other. If you don't get picked, calm tf down. And geez, if you're in it... do something cuz otherwise that's one expensive t shirt. I met this one AKA way back before i even wanted to be greek anything. I swear one day she crossed and lost her damn mind. She would see me in public and expect me to come up and GREET HER. I kid you not. I wasn't playing any games and slick sat right down one day, and that B whacked me with a folder in my arm. Granted it didn't HURT but girl the disrespect... we almost had a REAL, PHYSICAL problem. tl;dr Don't let being in a BGLO get to your head because it can lead to a swift ass kicking. Not everyone wants to be a member of your org, and those people will nut up on your disrespectful ass real quick.

+ApplesThatRead i agree with you 100%.. i mean im tryna figure out why people really, truly want to even be in sororities? I mean..whats the underlying purpose? People who are in college are gonna build some type of relationship at one point or another..i dont think people need a sorority to do that.. i dont think a person needs a sorority to make a difference or a change in someones life.. i just dont get tit..

  • @ApplesThatRead

    @ApplesThatRead

    8 жыл бұрын

stillettopumps86 I can answer that in more detail if you like but the short answer is you are correct, no one NEEDS to be an AKA it is simply a choice some of us WANT to make. I joined for Sisterhood, Scholarship, and Service to All Mankind. And to be honest that's all AKA has to offer- I'm real tired of all this Illuminati mess. There's no "underlying" purpose, there aren't any life changing secrets, and any question you could possibly have about AKA that is approprate for you to know I guarantee is answered on the aka1908 website lol. To be frank about why SOME girls join tho... Hmmmm. They think people will fall to the ground and worship it as they walk on it. They took one slap too many during their illegal pledging processes and actually BELIEVE they're goddesses among outsiders. They're hoes (full shade, as Dr. Nina said not everyone wearing letters is of good character). Undercover hoes trying to use letters to hide their hoe antics. For frats, quite a few (not NEARLY all but a decent handful) are gay and not necessarily "down low" but very private and use frats as a means for gay sex. Some people are involved in masonry, OES and all that occult stuff, but that isn't really a thing in AKA or Delta. People come with lots of ulterior motives, but the three reasons to join AKA are very public and very straightforward.

Thank you for posting this video. I have been a member of My Fraternity for over a year now. I find it amazing that people would not give you the time of day but when gaining three letters across your chest, and you're an instant celebrity. I was already involved on campus being a part of various organizations, and I didn't pledge until my senior year. I have experienced the groupies on my campus, but always try to shed light on being a part of an organization. Again thank you for the insight. 06-08!!!

Excellent video! I will share with others, especially my college age family members. I am a proud 40+ year member of a BGLO. My interest was peaked as a high school student when I was positively influenced by Black men of my environment ( neighborhood, schools, church, etc.) My father was my greatest teacher, mentor and hero. However, the other men most of whom did not even have the opportunity to pursue an education still were outstanding leaders in my community. Once I realized that I would have a chance to attend college, some of the men I encountered really impressed me with their intelligence, commitment and yes their swag. I have never regretted my decision to join my BGLO, it has enhanced my life immensely. I have enjoyed the friendships, fellowship, brotherhood, concern, commitment exhibited by not only the men of my organization but by all of the others as well. Everything is not for everybody! However, I for one can say that BGLO enhanced my collegiate and lifetime experiences for the better.

I tell people all the time who are interested or curious about our organization to join forte right reasons not because you want to meat the CEOs and CFOs of KPMG, Deloitt, E&Y, etc. NABA has a great history and an interesting background where 9 Accountants came together because there were not too many people of Color as Accountants. As a proud member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated (14 years), I will admit that your video is on point. The Divine 9 were created to assist the African - American and not for popularity purposes. Unfortunately, some people have joined the D9 just for the name, and many don't care to be active/ financial once they have received the letters. Before anyone joins a D9, they should research the history, and not look at the strolls and stepping styles. A few years ago, a young lady was interested in stepping so much that she wanted to be an SGRHO. Thanks, for another amazing video!

I am a member of Alpha Nu Omega Sorority, Inc. It's a Christian Fraternity and Sorority. And I totally love this video and I want to show my chapter members this video because we as Greek, even the Christian ones, need to understand this concept as well. And people need to know even though you're in a Greek lettered Christian organization that doesn't mean you automatically have to become a nun and a perfect angel. Doesn't mean people in Christian organizations don't sin. And it definitely don't give you a one way ticket to Heaven! That's Jesus job.........

I know I am SO late to this video but hopefully you may still see this comment. So I’m interested in crossing in my undergrad year into a D9 Sorority. I’m currently in the very early process of doing my research and just trying to go to events and really see what each sorority has to bring to the table in beliefs and philanthropy as well as how it’s members conduct themselves online. So my first question is, is there anywhere besides those organizations websites that you would suggest going to do more research. And two, the only thing that’s holding me back from fully committing to this process are the specific chapters at my school and just some things that I’ve heard on campus. That have made me a little unsure about crossing into any of the sororities on my campus. How would I go about talking to some chapter members to really just have honest dialogue and hear about the good, the bad, the ugly and everything in between. Would that be rude to ask? Is that something that they’re even allowed to tell me? I’m mostly worried that I could cross over into and organization that I really like and believe in but also into a specific chapter that I may not.

I agree with you 100 percent. My entire life as a child I was around Alphas and thought I would be one too. As I got older and started to really pay attention to organizations, the Sigmas were the ones who I always saw doing positive things in my area which is how they inspired me to become a Sigma instead. I did my research and what Phi Beta Sigma Stands for fits so much more into who I am as a person. I say all this to say #1 every chapter is different #2 make the letters do not let the letters make you and #3 join something that has ideals similar to your own

I was never really interested in Greek life because of the movies and stories I had heard. The majority were negative about the hazing and the making you feel like you have to depend on others. As I got older I met a few people that were apart of organizations and they explained that it is helpful with studying, networking, mentoring, etc. I’ve thought about joining and be apart of a sisterhood that will support and help develop me as an individual. I tried to do research and look into the different organizations, but it’s had to find out about the differences and what they do. How should I go about learning more

BeautyBrwnBabyDol, I first want to say thank you for this video. I have always had that thought in that back of mind to join a sorority. Personally I wanted to join to gain a social life so I can learn and start networking and just spreading the positive aspects and joy that I have in life for my lord and savior. Now I was told that I had to have bachelor’s degree years ago and now that I am in school with a year under my belt heading towards my BA, I am told that with my "choice of schooling" that joining still may not be an option. I would love to be in a sisterhood with women who know their worth and love themselves so there are willing to teach others and help others and not barging of what they have or can do. I feel (personal opinion please don't take offense) But I feel that us women already have a hard time giving or accepting a compliment and evening working with each other so( in some situation not for everyone ) an organizations is needed. It would be nice to have more than one woman who can prove the theory wrong and show that that truly care. To have the experience and the knowledge of developing a relationship within the community, your sisters, and new things about yourself would be a beautiful thing to accomplish and become part of. No matter what age if we are willing, there is always something to learn and gain from another women that is walking on the right and positive path. My apologies if I am all over the place. I was wondering if you can point me in the right direction. Now far as school, I am an art major in Interior Design program at The Art Institute. Have a wonderful and beautiful blessed day love and thank you in advance.

I want to do this sorority, but I know that every college is different I go to ODU in Virginia and I was wondering what questions can I ask the AKA because I live in a dorm and we have 6 floors I'm on the second floor and a member is on the third who is also a resident assistant? I did make a mistake awhile ago saying I wanted to be one on Facebook I posted it on facebook and my cousin told me never to do that I never knew you weren't supposed to say what you wanna be I'm a freshman so that's why I looked at videos online about how they step I went to the interest meeting to see what it was about. I went to this thing the college had and all the sororities and fraternities were there but what stood out to me was the AKA's even the other sororities performed too I just wanna know how can I stand out? We haven't had "rush week" yet but how can I impress them I do act myself around a lot of people but besides that.

what if someone was to ask a member of a particular organization about certain things pertaining to Greek life (I.e pledging) but that someone didn't necessarily say that they were interested? In other words say if somebody asks a sigma a question about pledging but they lowkey wanna be an alpha but didn't just up and say "I wanna be an alpha" to that sigma, they're just asking questions about the process. Would that become a problem when it's time for their own process??? I hope I didn't confuse you lol

You and my sister have helped me so much with the advice that you ladies have been giving. I can say this I was a cheerleader for AKA in high school but something my sister asked me " What are your interest in being a K?" I never really gave her an official answer til this day and it has been 4 years ago. I have started my research since 2012 and I am not as much of a cheerleader as I was then. My first thought in college was to be on top of my classes instead of being in a Greek organization. Because I have been watching you episodes I knew more of what not to do... So I really want to thank you

I'm not a Greek member but first entering college I thought I would be a part of one of the divine nine. However upon researching I realized that as a working, single mom I didn't have the time to devote to the organization. It's important that people understand the time and financial commitment attached to being a part of a Greek organization.

Ten years! That's a sign to give up. Why continue to try to be apart of something that does not show interest in you becoming a member. That's like chasing a guy for ten years...get the hint. There are alot of community organizations that you can join. Create your own identity and serve your community on behalf of yourself. There's something that you are expressing to this Sorority that is a turnoff. I don't know what it is but listen to the video again. Maybe you are trying too hard for the wrong reasons.

AKA's graduate chapters are VERY hard to get into (I'm assuming you are referring to graduate chapter; no college was mentioned). You have to first, wait for them to have a line; which is not often. Then, you need several recommendations/sponsorship from financial and active members. There are some other requirements your sponsors must have. I suggest you stop emailing the presidents and visit their website. Find out what events they are hosting that is open to the public-attend and mingle. If you know any Greeks that are active with your local NPHC ask them what the AKA'S have going on. They should know. We all get invites to each other's programs and events. Like we tell ladies that are interested in DST; if you are busy in your community you will run into a Greek!

Both will be considered. When I joined Sigma Gamma Rho they were more concerned with the overall school GPA. I am unsure of how your school will look at it but usually the overall GPA you have at the school is the one that is considered. It all depends on the chapter requirements! :) Good luck!

Aereana Grandberry sorry i shouldve explained! Yes, I meant the cumulative GPA. But it really depends on the chapter and the school requirements because since you are a transfer student they may just take into account your grades at your new institution since that transcript is easily accessed. I have only done one intake and have not encountered this situation (sorry, hope that helps)

The individual organizations have their own standards so see their websites for these details; the information might be there. For Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., it is the cumulative GPA that is considered but you must meet the national GPA requirement; however, an individual chapter may have a higher GPA requirement but never lower than the national standard. Also, some colleges have their own GPA requirement for those who wish to become greek members so in that case, you will also have to meet that requirement but again, never lower than the sorority's national standard.

A few of the Divine Nine organizations have Affiliate organizations such as the Philos of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. The Philos are mostly women who have not attended 4 yr colleges (although they must have a high school diploma or equivalent) but work with the sorority in serving their communities. Just like sorority members, they have chapter meetings, host programs and events, do community service, and attend regional and national conferences. They are a national organization with chapters connected to and advised by our Alumnae/Grad chapters. If you are interested, see sgrho1922.org for more details and contact an Alumnae/Grad chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. near you.
