Did you have any further experience with the Melafix in other tanks that had the sand? I like using Melafix but do not want to run into a problem with this sand

The the coarse grit just a little bigger/heavier? I want to make sure the sand stays put when I gravel vac it - regular sand gets sucked up.

as far as I know black sand blasting media is crushed slag which is man made volcanic glass which is what black sand from Hawaii is the only none glass baring black sand I know about is iron ore sand like you see on the beach hear but that would start to rust pretty quick in a aquarium I am glad thats its working well for you I have 300lb of the stuff so I am going to use it in my new tank thanks

Just so you guys know, this stuff is crushed slag. Slag is a byproduct of steel refining and is essentially glass, making this product crushed glass. Not saying that it's not good for tanks. Just letting you know.

Alot of the substrates out the are just crushed lava rock which is pretty much the same as glass.

This stuff is boiler slag, which is a recycled product from coal burning plants. When coal is heated at over 2,500 degrees it melts and produces a by-product called slag. When the slag is cooled through a process called vitrification, it crystallizes, forming sharp, angular granules in a variety of sizes. It’s actually a black, glass matrix alumina-silicate that contains traces of beryllium. I would first rinse/wash it thoroughly and let it set in a bucket of water for at least 1 month with weekly water changes before I would consider put it in my discus tank.

Just a suggestion I would use much better lighting and put something in the picture to show the grains of sand size like for instance put a pinch of sand next door Penny and then next to the penny on the other side you can put pool sand it will give you a comparison for size

It is very sharp, kind of similar to broken glass's sharp edge. However I have some corys and stem plans in the black diamond blasting sand and they are all fine.

Do you monitor your water parimeters regularly? Sense this video have you kept this substrate and has it effected the water chemistry in your tank at all? Hard water anything like that.

  • @TylersAquariums

im still using it in 5 aquariums and no it hasn't effected my water at all but i have read stuff online about different people having different experiences with it so if you do use it just be cautious at first. The only problem i had with it was when i put melafix in my aquarium it slightly changed the color of the sand and made it look kinda dusty looking along with making the glass look cloudy so i got rid of the sand drained the tank and wiped down the inside and started over with different sand.

Tyler's_Aquarium's im staing a 180 and the amount of sand i need will be pretty pricey. Luckily it will be going into a new tank so worst comes to worst im cycling it andbstarting slow anyways. So if somethings wrong in the first few months i can always switch it so worth a try. Thanks

Your welcome if your wanting cheap sand but dont care about the color quikrete medium sand is white and goes for about 8 bucks for 100 pounds at home depot or lowes. I never had any problems with that sand. I have also used HTH pool filter sand from ace hardware 50 pounds for 12 dollars its a tan color never had problems with it either.

Which would look nicer in an aquarium? Black sand? Or the regular white sand? Plus, is the black sand natural and real like the white sand?

  • @TylersAquariums

AnimalLover personal choice the black made my dovii's color come out more whereas the white makes them appear lighter. The black sand is actually blasting sand and its used to smooth or rough up a surface Im not a 100% sure what the blasting sand contains. Check out my other sand video out towards the end I show different tanks with different types of sand. kzread.info/dash/bejne/f46dudt-k7WdZrw.html

depends on the fish. I read in a book that fresh water fish look best with darker substrate and salt water fish look best with whiter substrate.

    for those of you that's thinking about getting this, if you don't know your #'s on this stuff like I didn't till I got home after buying it, you want the 12/40 course OR the 20/40 is MED, the person at the store GAVE ME the FINE telling me it was the course's they had... it turns OUT it was the FINEST they had so I had to GO BACK to the store :>{

P.S I can also tell you that if you clean this in a white bucket it will leave a black stain in it & BLEACH wont get rid of it so use a black bucket if you don't want to have a black stain in it just my take on that BUT I can say this now that I have used it in MY tank, it is AWESOME if you get like a few 3-4 handfuls of colored gravel & mix in with it it just kicks the color out SO MUCH more & with guppies with THEIR colors it's just TOO AWESOME if you want to try it I'd give you a thumbs up & you will slap LOVE it.

Yes but is it safe? Im not sure and sorry i forgot to mention that in the video. While i was doing research online about this sand some people said it was fine for bottom dwellers such as corys some people say its not. The only bottom dweller i had with this sand was my wolf fish so i couldnt say from experience if its a good choice or not.

Tyler's_Aquarium's I've used the Tahitian Moon sand and bottom dwellers do not like to burrow in it or sift it through their gills, I just put up a video of a black sand tank i am setting up but my sand sifters will go in the 75 with light brown pool filter sand...
