thank you so much for these 3 videos!! Have you tried to use gravel instead of this sand? I'm thinking, because gravel particles are bigger than sand particles, gravel is less likely to settle and go below the flourite and therefore the 3 layers are more likely to maintain their integrity in the long term. thanks again.

Thank you! It actually upgraded the channel doing that. Gave me extra options and allowed for Thumbnails so the beginning of the videos aren't some random spot half way through a video. I also figured out how to take ownership of the videos. If you don't license them to yourself. It can retort in loss of ownership. To the "Man" as they say. Lol

Before I got into plants, I used to have the cheap aquarium gravel had a bad pest snail invasion had to change the substrate I decided I wanted black sand and my fish shop guy told me of Black Diamond love it ... (The Tractor Supply store carries it if you hardware does not have it) . If you wash it the hotter the water you use the better (I washed about 75 pounds) but I had to wash it and add it a little at a time I had fish and one tank removed my old gravel .. But to keep tank cycled I put the old gravel in pantyhose left the gravel in tank till I was done switching to Black Diamond, I add the Black Diamond in sections waited a 2-3 days add more BD when I finished … I left the old gravel in tank in the pantyhose bag for 2-3 weeks til I know tank was safe took me a month to do that way, but I had to only with one tank

Did you sift out the organic soil of debris or just dump into the tank? I'm setting up a 33 long here soon using your method. I like that idea of the flourite clay over the soil and than sand cap over that. Makes a lot of sense. New sub here 👍

I really appreciate the subscription. You asked at a really good time. It's been months since I did this combination. The answer is yes and no. I'll explain. If I found large roots or sticks I removed them. However, leaving all the small rocks, partially alive vegetation, and twigs enhanced the biological and beneficial bacteria needed in a self sustaining ecosystem. Not only did the clay retain those needed substances, but it gathered them astronomically. The plant growth is way beyond my expectations and the combination of substrates can handle the waste and ammonia 3 schools of fish produce daily. 25 inhabitants. 3 different schools of fish in a 40 gallon breeder. Today I am making a video discussion about how this combination of substrates far exceeded my expectations. Thanks for the question. I'll be shouting out to you and showing what that tank looks like now 5 months later. I don't even have to vacuum the substrate. It's unreal.

Would fine instead of medium diamond blast work just as good?

Yes, the point of the sand is to keep particular types of bacteria and living organisms from escaping into the water column. The more fine the sand, the better it'll perform it's job. The soil actually becomes alive with millions of microorganisms that serve a very beneficial purpose in running an ecosystem.
