BL Mazda 3 (2009 to 2013): How to remove the ABS pump and module.

This video is a work in progress that I may or may not get to finish. At the moment, this video is useful to show you where the ABS pump and module are located, how to find out the ABS pump model number, how to remove the ABS pump and module, and how to find the ABS module model number.
This video does not show you how to do the reinstall. Basically, you physically install the unit, and then you need to do a complete bleed of the brake system.
ABS pump model numbers that I am aware of:
BFD1-437AZ-C
BFD2-437AZ
8V61-2C405-AE
8V61-2C405-AF
8V61-2C405-AG
8V61-2C405-CA
As far as I know, the last two characters are the revision number. The characters before that are the part number.
ABS control module model numbers that I am aware of:
A426G 09W091
A426G 10W016
Useful spanner sizes:
The flare nuts on the ABS pump need a 10mm crow's foot spanner.
The bleed nipples on the brake callipers need a 10mm crow's foot spanner.
All mounting nuts on the ABS pump assembly are 10mm.
If you are in Australia, I have seen the reconditioned ABS modules done by Injectronics. Their work looks first rate to me. www.injectronics.com.au/

    Thank you, Paul for the video. Once you remove the pump and module, would you be able to separate the black module box from the aluminum block by removing the 4 Torx screws on each corner? It looks possible, but I don't know for certain. I know on the Toyota Sienna, that module can be separated by removing allen key bolts.

    Hi John, I've posted that unit off already so I can't check. Looking at the photos I took first, you might be right. If I get a failed one that I don't mind breaking, then I will deconstruct it and let you know. Or you can do the same for me. Paul.

    Hello Paul, first of all, get well soon, I hope you have recovered. I am writing from Türkiye. I own a 2009 model BL case Mazda 3. About a week ago, the ABS, DSC and brake fault lights gave warnings, and when I started the car today, the warnings went away. When I stopped the vehicle and started it, the fault recurred. Do you think the ABS unit needs to be replaced? Thank you for your help.

  • @PaulinPerth

    Yes, I think a solenoid or a brush in the ABS module is starting to get sticky. The light will come on more frequently, and then it will stay on permanently. You don't have to rush to do the repair. It just means your ABS won't activate in a skid. So just drive conservatively until you get the unit replaced. Paul.

    hi i have a 2010 mazda 3 with bad abs module.. wondering if i get a used one is plug and play or i have to reprogram it??

  • @paulsz6194

    @paulsz6194

    Used ones can still fail. No programming necessary, it just has to have be the identical model number as the one on your original ABS module, just like Paul here mentions at 18:21.

    Yes, it will work. The last character is just a version number. E,F,G. The replacement you have found is a later version of the same part. It will fit.

    Is there a reprogram required for these ABS modules as some people say ?? I have this issue with my 2010 mazda 3

  • @PaulinPerth

    @PaulinPerth

    No. You don't need to reprogram the module. You install the part, bleed the brakes, and then start the car up and drive away. Just make sure you get the right part number. Paul.

    Hi Paul, i was able to connect with them via Bursons. Both were super helpful and tried really hard to find a solution to my ABS. Unfortunately that unit was beyond repair but was able to find a replacement which worked perfectly. Hardest part of job was tightening the nuts but got there in the end with some help.
