Half Grass. Half Clay. One Epic Match. By 2007, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal were fierce rivals and the undisputed best players in the world.. with an interesting twist. Federer was unbeatable on grass, while Nadal could not lose on clay. An idea was proposed to answer one simple question: If Roger and Rafa were able to play a match which allowed both of them their preferred surface, who would win? That idea was soon brought to life, with insane results!

I really find it fitting that the two overcame their handicaps after they were able to play a side by side comparison of the surfaces. It's one of those unique learning experiences that gives you that missing piece of the puzzle
@Dman9fp

They pretty much figured it out, clay court player always has the advantage and grass court player's best option is to approach the net. Even if it wasn't crap turf. It's overall gimmicky and likely why it hasn't been replicated
@DarkAngelEU

@@Dman9fp It's not gimmicky to learn how a surface influences your game. You still need to wn the game and Federer and Nadal are the best players alive. I'm amazed how little attention this event got, because it's really a once in a lifetime event, perhaps even unique in the history of tennis.

This is an amazing, insane sequence of events. First the game goes to the last possible point (after almost being cancelled). Then they each take what they learned from that game to end each other's crazy winstreak on their home court. What an amazing story.

Yeah, it's a crazy idea. Maybe it would have made more sense to have 2 courts side by side and play 2 games on the grass court (1 service game each) and then 2 games on the clay court? This half and half court is weird!! I never even knew this match happened - and I'm a tennis fan!!

While I think this helps with versatility, this is not a true test becuase one is hitting to surface that is is not preferred, and when that ball returns it is behaving differently than it would be on their preferred surface. As the video says Federer was at a disadvantage as he had the pitfalls of grass with none of the advantages. Where as clay is still slowing down balls and bouncing higher, and Federer's disadvantage is Nadal's advantage.

The fact they won on each others preferred surface the next time is a real lesson in empathy. Even though the court was flawed, they were forced to deal with each other in a way slightly more familiar to them, yet also unlike anything either had ever seen.

Great video! I remember watching this match but I had no idea about the last minute grass change. Makes a lot of sense.
It's simple: I see Cult Tennis and I like.
They should’ve played another match with the court split between grass and clay longwise rather than at the net. That way, each player could hypothetically hit from grass to grass (Roger’s probable preference), or clay to clay (Rafa’s probable preference). The opponent could use that tendency against him, though. And then play a third match with the court split diagonally...
