Some of the Chinese parts he has tested (like the Barrow water cooling parts) are not sketchy at all. They are well-known and reputable in the region, just not known in the Western market, even though chances are they are sold in North America or Europe under different brands.

AC voltage can be mesured in degrees as it oscilated at a given frequency through two 180° sine waves. It becomes even more complex when one has Three Phase or when ther are Inductve/capacitive loads causing voltage to lead current or vice vesa. Answer me this. Does current flow over the surface of a conductor or does it flow through it like water through a pipe?

@@andrew_koala2974 The AC voltage is measured in volts. The "phase" (more appropriately phase difference) can be measured in degrees, provided you have a multi-phase system. The CPU runs on DC, so no phase, and no 'degree' measurements. Also, lets cut this guy some slack. 'twas a slip of tongue. Happens all the time.

How is it sad? The i7-4720HQ was an incredible processor when it came out, and it still is. Thats why it was used in the $2700 2015 Razer Blade 14", because its pretty fast. And yeah I know that price is kind of inflated because Razer, but still, it was a very high end processor when it came out. A few years later it better still be dang fast.

@@-Burb the 4th gen is pretty amazing, I'm still using a 4700mq from 6 years ago. unthinkable how little intel improved all these years. their ssd aren't that good either, I think the best product they make are wifi cards now. no hyperthreading on the 9th gen is a unfitting move as well, If one want to have the function either get the 9900k or go back to 8th gen with unsoldered heat spreader.

A guess: some of those missing pads are grounds that have been made common. Result, at least one of the voltage sensor circuits is missing its ground connection and thus the 0v reading.

@Kappa Yeah but specific pins on the socket have to be making contact with that shorted ground for it to make the reading, it cant use the ground pins from another pin in the socket to get those reading because it's not hooked up to the sensor. The grounds would all have to be shorted together on the board side too......

both in desktops and laps there are some pin actually useless to get the cpu running. if you use a bga to take a laptop cpu off you ll find many pins are not connected to the motherboard.

This was quite common with the Athlon 64 Mobile Socket 754 CPUs - we would delid an old dead 754 and attach the lid to the mobile 754.... no substrate was needed only a heatspreader lid

All resources being considered, are you sure that'd actually produce less waste in the long run than just ramping up production of new processors? You're still spending the resources of making and soldering a new board, along with all the overhead of designing and maintaining it. Plus, being not only a mobile chip but also an old one at that, it probably won't last half as long as a new one would, and it'll suck up more electricity in the process.

I missed that but the mobo is still able to recognize the cpu and set the proper voltage. Thats why it was stable and cool.

If you have a Pentium II, you can run it at 90 degrees..in relation to the motherboard.

This only makes sense for Chinese people to buy, and that's the market it's intended for. Shipping within China is dirt cheap. You can get something from anywhere in mainland to wherever your door is for about 2$-5$ and Taobao protects buyers: you can actually make sure it works before confirming reception. Only then does the seller receive any money. Otherwise you can file for a return and they usually refund shipping too. I'd say this comes from a vendor that probably got his hands on a stockpile of laptops with dead motherboards and figured the converted CPUs would sell much faster like that than as spare parts for old laptops.

not really, I rarely have issues with DOA items (I've bought two of the 4980HQs too) and I use a freight forwarder all the time for my Taobao stuff. you just gotta know how to look out for obvious scams, seller reputation, etc.

I actually have an i7-4710-HQ CPU in a Gigabyte P34V2 laptop, and it's quite awesome.

Brings me back, way back to my first PC that had a AMD K6 200 and I picked up an adapter socket-board thing that allowed the newer chips to run on the old socket 7 boards.

It's interesting watching linus review all this Chinese tech. I recently bought a Chinese sim racing wheel and it's an amazing product.

Bor Zver He has a team (Linus Media *Group* ) and it’s his full-time job. It’s not really all that much when you consider that each video is roughly only 15 minutes long and he has more than enough editors.

@Bor Zver Most of these videos are pre-recorded from a few days ago, usually anywhere from a week to two weeks from before. Then he sends them to his team of like 5-6 editors who then edit it, then when they finish editing them they usually put them on delayed releases on youtube. Linus usually releases his stuff on Floatplane first, and releases stuff on youtube like a few days later. So usually by the time that non time sensitive videos like this reach youtube, he probably has like 5-10 videos stockpiled to be release every other day.

Seems like there's about three types of cross-socket "compatibility" exists right now according to this video. Edit:baidued and bilibilied about this mod,almost all of two architecture on Bga 1386 chip are supported up to 4980hq

The extra pins on mobile chip could just be ground or not connected. They're used to help transfer heat to a motherboard which can act as a heat sink.

I have shopped on Taobao several times and had stuff shipped to the U.S., never come across any sellers asking for extra money for misc. expenses. But, this was in 2020, and Taobao's global shipping program has come a long way. Oh, and if you want some cool SFF PC cases, there are some pretty awesome options for under $50USD.

Great find and great video. I am highly impressed with this discovery. Your CPU shenanigans are wonderful to watch. One of these days, I would love to create a video like this. To see that the custom chip worked must have been a wonderful a ha moment.

Although the point is valid that we ain't getting a big difference in Canada, but its main purpose is for those at the other side of the Pacific Ocean. Usually the shipment will arrive in 2 days or even 1 day depending on your location, no extra fees needed. And the shipment indeed is the most influential factor while you trying to buy a gadget from other countries.

The CPUs may have always had the heat spreaders. My guess is they were used in some sort of energy efficient workstations, something industrial, maybe point of sale and the Chinese company just salvaged and resold them.

yeah. embedded systems would use the laptop cpu variants and commonly used for industrial applications

i just got an older thinkpad with a 4810mq and with extreme tuning utility you can over clock some by bring the multiplayer up a little

Love the whackiness....and agree that "You know you've reached peak nerd when you have memorized the pin layouts for a 4 year old motherboard."...the GTX 1060 graphics card is fairly cool

I'm still using my 4790k in 2018, it's been working quite well.

4770k and GTX780 still working perfectly and I don’t have to upgrade the next 2 years.

I have that exact CPU in my Y50, and use throttle stop to unlock the 3.7GHz bin. Ran amazingly for a laptop CPU, at least when plugged in.

This video inadvertently makes me feel better about still running a 4790k. Thanks Linus and crew :)

I miss these laptop desktop cpu and Ali Express 1060 5g kind of videos. I love these videos.

Also Linus notes that this chip is also overclockable. A lot of dude in a Chinese form called TieBa have successfully OC it to 4.7g, and choice to use 4.5g for daily use.

@@Gargantura would suggest against this, some reported instability, bsod and crashes, plus this solder works may not be as stable as intels, and the cooper ihs is not as well built as originals. all in all, too many variables could cause instability, so i wouldnt recommend it unless you re building for fun :D

Fun fact: this CPU is overclockable for up to 4.4GHz.

In the uk you could buy these, they only came around every few weeks but they offered a great value for money and fit straight into a 1150 socket

now call intel and send it in for RMA lmao see their reaction

6:15 I've heard rumors that various Asian countries are very dedicated to re-purposing E-waste. Things like this could be a by product of that process. Very interesting.

I have got some digging about it yesterday, CPUs with no PCH included,and don't know who sell those chips to them to make this sort of hack happens, appeared one and a half year ago in China with a huge price drop made the price below desktop 4 gen chips recently

Wait a sec here... it's just about 15% lower in Cinebench, but isn't it's power draw WAY lower than that of the i7 4770k giving it a better ratio in terms of power consumption to performance ratio?

Ali Express is Legit, when it comes to CPUs and used Hardware, Recently picked up i5 4690k and GA Z97 D3H for a budget gaming build for my little brother for under $210. Paired it with RX 580. CPU is Overclocked to 4.5 at 1.23 V. All stable for over 3 months now and can play any AAA title in 1080p on custom settings. It make sense for people living in ASIA.

@@chopped586 Ali express standard shipping option is good, takes around 10- 15 days depending where you are. Faster options are available but they are pricy and you pay customs. I've been in the dump quite a few times and never paid a single cent on customs duty with standard option. Authorities here don't bother with 100$ pack. Rx 580 was locally sourced Graphics Card are not advised to purchase on any Chinese online portal.

@@dnbmania Honestly, I would recommend you stay as far away from it as possible. Being the middle man, and having to make up stories to satisfy both the buyer and the seller, processing returns, etc, it was hell. Also, having buyers try to scam you doesn't help. It is a high risk, low reward situation. For about $2400 of sales (not profit, sales), I (with many hours spent every day micromanaging everything, I netted about -$4.00. And not worth the stress and enormous amount of starting capital you need (ebay and amazon, etc. don't pay you until 21-30 days after the buyer has paid).

Thats the same exact motherboard that I have in my main desktop PC, but my CPU is a 4770K which I overclocked to 4.4 ghz which I have with 16 gb ddr3 ram 2400 mhz and a GTX 1080 graphics card. It seems to hold up well like in new games like Far Cry New Dawn, I usually get between 70 to 80 fps on 1080p ultra quality.

HP sold a lot of *business laptops that can use that CPU* in the mobile version. That explains why there is an excess upgrade market supply of this mobile CPU. Businesses upgrade to this mobile CPU from the core i2 CPU or so.

The reason certain mobile CPU stock remains high is that some models are bga only (soldered directly to motherboard) so upgrades are difficult/rare as they require a desoldering station. The only option is to use them in new motherboards (whilst chipset stocks last) or in this case adapt them for desktop use. The PGA versions are far more popular as they are user upgradable, mobile on desktop boards exist to utilise the low power consumption of mobile chips for sff and quiet pc builds.
