I'd never heard of either one of them... Till about 3 hours ago. I clicked on a pic with a short haired nerd sitting on a couch and a skater standing in the background. After I picked my jaw up off the floor, I been following Billy all over youtube, discovering more musicians I never heard of. Wishing once again that I would have spent every spare minute of my life with my grandma before she died, instead of hanging out getting wasted with other losers like myself. Grandma could play several instruments proficiently, and sing too. She could even yodel while playing an accordian. Sing Johnny cash songs while playing the guitar. Play piano while grandpa sang all them old songs. Hank Williams and the like. She was a genuine musician that loved performing with flair and style. She connected with it on a joy level. She would have *loved* watching this kid perform. I don't know what happens after we die. But I hope there's music there. And that she is fucking jamming it with grandpa and her parents. My great grands. Also multi talented musicians. I could play a pretty mean box of Kleenex right now.

There actually is music in heaven. Just give you heart to Jesus and you will be listening to grandparents old music again one day.

Billy Strings is the most interesting guitarist to emerge in quite a while. He has a way of surprising you with timing changes and unorthodox progressions that are as good as his speed technique. Whereas most speedy players become boring quickly, Billy keeps changing it up, surprise is good. What a career he has ahead of him!

Spontaneous combustion. Looks like Tommy let the kid shine. So positive for both artists. The speed isn’t even secondary. The mental capacity to hit different phrasings so dead center shows how each feed off the other. Often it seems people want a flash show, fair enough. But if you want nothing but icing, why order a cake? Love the choice of tunes (thank you again Merle) and the give and take. These guys get into heaven. In fact they are already there.

Way back in 1979 I was playing my Neil Young/ Dylan covers in a bar in Sydney and the band ' Goldrush' were playing upstairs. They were the cream of Australian Bluegrass musicians including Tommy & Phil Emmanuel, Tommy was playing Bass. They came down stairs during their break while I was playing and Tommy said to me, 'wow you've got a bigger audience than us'! I immediately stuffed up the chord and hoped the ground would open up and swallow me. Can relate to all the people who want to burn their guitar after seeing Tommy play, check out his brother Phil who he called 'the Wizz' . Phil sadly passed away a little while ago. I ran in to Tommy a few times in the eighties and he was always friendly, happy and non judgemental. Love the new kids, too, Billy Strings, Marcus King etc, Thanks for the music !

Funny though, Tommy Emmanuel has been said by almost all guitarists to be the best guitar player of today and I would bet most people haven't heard of him. So glad this came up on my feed, I've just discovered Billy strings recently and have been in awe of him, not surprised Tommy collaborated with him, they just gelled together so well, literality having conversations with each other on guitar and having the craic doing it. fantastic 😎😎👍

Fantastic players, fantastic technique and lightning-quick thinking--and yet. Neither of them (in this song, at least) even come close to the sexiness of James Burton's original solo. This is a little bit the downside of these endless torrents of 8th notes.

@@locarnese5598 You cant think fast enough to jam like that:/ Its not "muscle memory", The mind has to be involved, muscles cant play by themselves, lol. Its decades of practice so you know the fretboard so well that you dont have to think consciously to know exactly the many different options you have to get what you want. That jam is not that complicated anyway. A simple blues riff, and blues rundowns and their many variations are some of the first you learn. Granted they do it well, but for Tommy at least thats very simple stuff. I dont know how long you have been playing, but if you still have to think before hitting the strings, you have a long way to go mate:)

Tommy, I believe is the most skilled guitarist to ever live. People like Chet Atkins, Les Paul and others thought so to. He's also a great ambassador for music. He tours the world doing his one man band show. The day before each show he does a workshop for kids and shares the craft. Most times he picks one of the kids to come up on stage and perform with him at his concert. He likes to pick out the most excited person in the crowd to give a CD to. He's a class act.

It's good to hear things like that about such great musicians like Tommy so you know they're not up their own fundaments. I think it was Emmylou Harris in an interview said that being ill and having to rest for a good while was the best thing that ever happened to her because she had time for reflection and realised that she was becoming arrogant, thinking she was someone special who deserved special treatment. She didna like what she saw in herself, and hopes she's changed. Tommy doesna seem to have that problem.
