Billy Dee Williams (Star Wars, Brian’s Song) joins us this week to reflect on his incredible legacy in this industry - from the importance of his casting as Lando Calrissian in Star Wars, to his chemistry with Diana Ross, and why he’s steadfast with his unique creative approach rather than playing the victim.
Truly appreciate Billy Dee coming on the podcast as a self admitted ‘private person,’ his honestly about dark times in life and the idea of not dwelling on the negatives was refreshing.
Tons of stories about the golden age of Hollywood in this episode, hope you enjoy and make sure to check out his book What Have We Here?

I'm a Black male, bicentennial baby (1976) and Harlem, NYC native. I'm so proud of you, Mr. Rosenbaum....for giving Mr. Williams one of the BEST interviews I've seen. You said Billy was reticent, initially. I didn't sense that, AT ALL. He's too old to play games. He was vibing with you, from the start of the interview. Us older folks can suss people/situations out----almost immediately. AND HE ACTUALLY RECITED HIS ICONIC, COLT 45 & "STAR WARS" TAGLINES---WITHOUT PROMPTING!!! Mike, YOU are the difference between some late-1980's--90's baby just knowing ONE film/character.....and asking a bunch of nerdy, hack questions. You were able to travel throughout his life experiences....theater and film work....and give each moment an equal amount of reflection. You were able to inject your own experiences.....and circle back to Mr. Williams. Your pacing and humor was organic. You really are a great interviewer. I always say, many of these late 1980's---2000 babies (particularly Black Americans) are severely lacking the benefit of pre-1940....or pre-1950 elders. [Until their deaths in the mid-1980's and mid-1990's] I grew up surrounded by my elders born from the turn of the century.....to 1912, 1916, 1933, 1935....and 1947. Like my aforementioned elders, Billy's not giving politically-correct nonsense, trendy "progressive" vocab salad....or pontificating. He just IS. This was the atmosphere I---and many pre-1980 Black folks----remember. Good job, for facilitating this. BTW: I don't know about Caucasian women and others....but most Black women in the late 1970's and 1980's treated Billy like THE BLACK POPE. I'm glad he recounted this.

My biggest regret was not buying a painting at Dragon*Con that had Lando holding Leia in his arms and a Colt 45 beneath them with the tag line "Does it every time" written at the very bottom of the painting. It was the same year BOTH Billy Dee Williams and Carrie Fisher attended for autographs, and I thought about buying the painting and asking them to sign it but never did. I still regret not doing so to this day.

Billy looks and sounds great. I'm happy the Lando series might finally be happening because it could be incredible if done right. I trust Glover but had a vision for the show as soon as it was announced. Here's what I saw: An elderly Lando Calrissian, portrayed by Billy Dee Williams, flashes back to his younger swashbuckling years sharing how the legend Lando came to be. The extended flashback being the bulk of the series, only intermittently cutting back to the present day as Elder Lando continues sharing his story. Part 1: A young wide-eyed boy, wise and quick-witted beyond his years lives his life straight and by the rules. Until one day, when put into a bind beyond his control, is forced to play things underhandedly. He then quickly learns that crime and deception pay more. To provide for himself and his impoverished friends and family, he excels in hustling at every opportunity that arises. Finally breaking away from his home planet and loved ones after setting them up financially, we follow the adventures of a self-centered, degenerate gambler hustler sinking deeper and deeper into the criminal underworld. A man who's only driven by greed, sexual conquests, vanity, and personal gain. During this, Lando's first introduction to the Millennium Falcon occurs through gambling, theft, purchase, or construction. There's a ton of violence, action, intrigue, and de*th-defying journeys he handles with his skill, charisma, and cleverness building up to the finale where he risks all of his accumulated wealth and his life in an ultra-high-stakes game against a ruthless crime syndicate (like the Black Sun or others) to acquire Cloud City. After an intense back-and-forth game, in the end, Calrissian wins it all to become Baron of the City to end season/part 1. Part 2: Explores someone who's overwhelmed by his new responsibilities finding that his old hustling ways no longer hold any value. We then see Lando's slow evolution from a self-centered 2-bit criminal into an effective, politically savvy, selfless leader of Cloud City who's able to address the needs of his people. Then often personally leading strike teams that fight off alien invasions, heading investigations, finding missing persons, solving crimes, politically outmaneuvering rivals, achieving great accomplishments that benefit his constituents, etc. with a team he's assembled consisting of Lobot, droids, a grey or albino Wookie (not Chewbacca), along with different alien and human confidants. The once reckless selfish playboy has become a responsible selfless man. And under his leadership, Cloud City thrives. Part 3 and the last act of the final season: Everything begins to fall apart. The political intrigue becomes deeper, more consequential, and more unfavorable for Lando. Gangs have taken over large parts of the city. Crime is rampant. Invasions more frequent. Trade wars become ungovernable. Close allies dropping off one by one from de*th or betrayal. Ass*ssination and coup attempts become almost constant. All of his achievements become undone culminating in a final turning point where his wife and child d*e in childbirth. Lando becomes completely lost and broken. But at his lowest, he suddenly receives a message from someone high up who claims they can change his fortune if they meet. He's desperate and out of options so he reluctantly accepts. The series finale reveals that person to be Vader and the meeting that leads to the events in ESB. We'd finally get to see what led to Calrissian's fateful decision to betray Solo and suddenly might have empathy for him and his actions. And look at Lando in ESB differently because we know we likely would've made the same choice under his circumstances. Watching his life journey leading up to that event would show us what played into his belief that this action was best for him and his people. And the only way out of his predicament. That's how I see what the show could or should be. I think Glover is going to crush it either way. Especially if this backstory is covered at all.

I was in that state when I found this podcast going through a dark time in my life it save me. Some people don’t really understand what going through peoples head when they are depressed and feeling down. Feeling loss or going through grieving or feeling alone, we are not really alone and ending life isn’t the answer. Love this podcast and there are people that do listen counseling and therapy is the best thing you can do for yourself when you’re feeling in that state. There is a lot of love and caring in this world it’s not always a dark place.

Billy looked and sounded like an old guy with dementia when I last saw him at Star Wars celebration, but here he seems to be so alert and alive. ✌️ 🍻

Before Empire Billy Dee was already know as a Cool Motherfu----. So when Empire came out everyone thought well of course Han Solo's buddy would be Billy Dee. Who's as cool as Harrison Ford. Billy Dee! I love his appearance on Modern Family. Jay generation sees Lady Sings the Blues, Brian's Song. Then Phil walks in and just says "Lando!" Classic. Outside of Rocky/Rambo my favorite Stallone film is "NightHawks". Sly and Billy Dee were great buddy-cops.

He is impressively articulate and intelligent for an 86 year old man. Honestly a lot of 65 year olds aren't this cogent in their speaking. Truly a great artist and actor.

Don't forget "Lady Sings the Blues" with Diana Ross. I'm not sure why but I find it reassuring to see those that are older and still have good teeth.
