Billy Crystal Talks Rat Pack With Don Rickles | Dinner with Don

Billy Crystal once won $1,000 from Robin Williams in a bet over Don Rickles. In this episode of “Dinner with Don,” the comedians talk Don’s long friendship with Frank Sinatra and the rest of the Rat Pack. Billy does his Sammy Davis Jr. impression and Don does his best Clark Gable and Anthony Quinn. "Dinner with Don" is a legacy series celebrating Don Rickles' life and career. It was produced by AARP Studios, Winbrook Entertainment and Stamper Lumber Company.

@AARP Rickles is a great guy, but it's too bad he brought up the war criminal, "Bush Senior" (George HW Bush), the overt racist who accelerated the war on drugs that militarized police and destroyed poor communities around the United States, and that you chose to include that section. Definitely ruined the delightful tone of the piece.

I saw Don perform at a dinner theater with 2 friends back in the 1970s. I was 17 years-old at the time. My friends and I are Italian, and the club had a dress code, so we were dressed in suits. Don noticed our table and introduced us to the crowd as the 'junior Mafia'! So we had the honor of being insulted by the great Don Rickles! A memory of a lifetime.

He was a master at almost instantly diffusing tense situations before they could even start to escalate. In his interview with Zach Galfianakis, he mentioned that he always knew when he went too far with a joke or a roast. That takes a lot of skill to hone in on people's emotions like that so quickly. I've seen so many comedians who try to take on a heckler in the audience completely buckle under the pressure. Another problem you have to figure out is how to not dig a hole and jump into it when you are engaging another person. You'd never see Rickles in those situations because he could see them coming a mile a way and offer a quick apology and maybe a handshake before that person even had a chance to yell at him.

Loved Rickles. in 1976 I was stationed at Mather A.F.B. in Sacramento . My mom and her boyfriend would fly into Las Vegas a few times a year and I would always meet them there. Her Boyfriend " Rocky " the generous man that he was , would always ask me what shows I wanted to see while we were all together. We saw Rickles at Caesars Palace . The Mills Brothers opened up for him back then . They are ALL gone now but I have my cherished memories ... Thanks for posting

For an insult comic who was known for edgy and controversial jokes, it speaks volumes that not one of his peers has ever spoke badly about Rickles. Everyone says what a genuinely warm and nice person he was. That’s a testament to the type of human being Don Rickles was. Truly one of a kind. There will never be another like him.

Ah but there have been many tales about the consequences of his act. I witness one personally. A kind and sensitive person could not and would not make a career of humiliating people for laughs. Long before considering making a career of it, a person like that would have recognized the problem early in life and adjusted their behavior.

The only time I saw someone angry with Rickles in real life was Johnny Carson. Don had subbed for Carson and had broken something, a box for cigarettes I believe, Carson went and interrupted the filming of Don's TV series CPO Sharkey to yell at him

@@O0Salmon0O He made a career of making just as many jokes at his own expense as he did with others. And what exactly were the consequences of his act? What was your personal little anecdote on him? What results of today are directly tied to him that he specifically was the cause of? I’ve never heard anyone say, “It’s Don Rickles’ fault.”
