Bill Maher on Getting Anger from Both Sides, Our Divided Country & Norm Macdonald’s Passing

Комедия

Bill talks about Jimmy giving him pot, all the times he traveled with weed and was paranoid about it, going on tour, people being afraid to leave their houses to see the shows, people from both sides of the aisle being mad at him, the idea of having two national anthems, the divide in the country, COVID rules and regulations, and Norm Macdonald passing.

Oh, completely. I personally like our national anthem, but I'd be willing to change it if there's a large group of Americans who legitimately have a problem with it. But two national anthems is ridiculous. We literally have the word "united" in our country's name.

@Luminary Harris Good luck with that. We can't even get all the people in this country to agree on anything, and you want the entire world to be under one umbrella? Jimmy states why he and his audience is uncomfortable - it’s because there’s a lot of fear in the environment. Of course the left has created and nurtured that “atmosfear”, but I think that most of the level-headed majority of the left feels like they now realize that everything has gotten out of hand but they also feel like they can’t jump ship, so they’re waiting till it’s safe to laugh, safe to clap, and safe to say what they really want to say. They just need a few more left leaders to show that it’s ok to admit this was all stupid.

Q nuts like MTG are no longer the outliers, even supposed moderates on the right reflexively say no to everything. I'm a moderate Dem, I want compromise and conversation to get things done. Instead Dems just water everything down because they barely have power, and the GQP tries to block every single thing they want to do, even if it would help them. Liz Cheney is the reasonable one. And we just thanked Dan Quayle for helping save us from his own party's CURRENT leader. Who the rest of the party can't admit genuinely lost. Quayle! That's crazy.

This is the second time I heard Bill talk about a time when people didn't used to talk about politics like they do now. When I was a kid in the seventies it didn't matter whether you were an atheist or a Christian or a Republican or Democrat. When Nixon resigned it didn't matter if he was a republican, what he did was wrong what most people thought. When Carter made a lot of mistakes, it didn't matter if he was a Democrat, people thought he was screwing up. It was about what was right and wrong, fair and unfair, not what political party you belonged too.

The problem is the way we have connected politics to people’s morality (and inherently, their self-worth). When someone calls you evil, there’s really no compromise with that (for most people), and they become “evil” and worth beating at all costs in your mind.

From that group, only 28 percent fought again. That is alot of people that halfway learned to change their mind when life hits you in the face. Unfortunately, a loved one has to go sick and die for them to internalize the bs. and many never experience this as their wealth provides them from having to have their loved ones or peers go through this.

@Julian Rivera It might be better if it were true but it isn't. We all judge, we can all judge poorly. Sometimes I can catch myself in the act: "Why do that", "Why say that" "Why wear that", and if I pay close enough attention over a 24hr period it turns out that I'm a rather judgemental so and so. I suspect if we each ran such an experiment we might learn to judge a little less. Who knows, it was just an observation of that interaction and the clear unease that the subject can still create.

Maher often has simplistic reactions to very complex issues, and he can be very arrogant. Yes, there is a pandemic of obesity on this country. But he never seems to blame some of the underlying reasons for it such as poverty, access to healthy food, and incessant advertisement of junk food everywhere. Instead, he blames the victims. He lives in his social media bubble. and that is his reality. Although his idea about building a water pipeline across the country that he posed this past week was inspired.
