Bilateral Stimulation - Anxiety Release App Demonstration

Clinical psychologist Chris Mackey demonstrates how he introduces a therapy intervention called "bilateral stimulation" to clients.
According to Mackey, this technique is the single most helpful intervention he has yet encountered for managing with worries, anxiety-related sensations and pain.
Remarkably it can be accessed in an inexpensive app developed by the excellent clinical psychologist, Mark Grant. It can be accessed at anxietyreleaseapp.com/

Chris Mackey is a clinical and counselling psychologist and Fellow of the Australian Psychological Society with 40 years’ psychotherapy experience. He is the principal psychologist at Chris Mackey and Associates, his private psychology practice in Geelong.

Chris is also the resident psychologist for Destination Happiness, a wellbeing TV show aired nationally across Australia on Channel 9 and internationally through the Discovery Channel. Chris appears on 93.9 Bay FM, in Geelong, with his radio guest spot, at 5:40pm every second Wednesday with Roxie Bennett and Daryl Reader. Segments on synchronicity involve callers phoning in to tell of their experiences of meaningful coincidences.
He also writes an opinion column for The Geelong Advertiser as he has done over the past few years.
Chris has presented at numerous national and international scientific conferences over the past 25 years on such topics as the assessment and treatment of psychological trauma, the evaluation of the effectiveness of psychological therapy for anxiety and depression and the wellbeing benefits of synchronicity. He has a particular interest in promoting more optimistic approaches to mental health, including positive psychology.

    This is a technique used in emdr correct? So are you saying to use the app when you're feeling anxiety or some stressful situation happens and to focus on the feeling in your body through each minute to lower the distress? Which is different than in emdrv with a theripist who might focus more on what memories come up during that distressful experience?

    Yes, in this case I am suggesting to start by focussing on the feeling in your body and see what happens. Many people feel some relief from that. This simple technique is not meant to replace completing a course of therapy incorporating EMDR delivered by a therapist. But many find this technique helpful and worth trialling.

    This technique sounds very similar to RRT and EMDR therapies. Can you elaborate on the differrences and similarities?

    Bilateral stimulation is a component of EMDR, not the same as EMDR. Like monitoring negative thoughts is a component of CBT, but not the whole treatment. In this instance he's using BLS for alleviating anxiety or self-soothing with someone who is not needing or seeking a proper EMDR therapy process.

    I would not call this EMDR therapy, which has so many extra components than bilateral stimulation demonstrated here. I do not believe it would be unsafe to explore this technique from the video demonstration.

    I'm not sure what you mean by that, Alex. We have certainly found that this strategy has helped very many people in therapy sessions, and hopefully people can trial it for themselves. This video is not meant to put people off going to therapy if they have significant or persistent mental health problems or distress.
