Emdr , helped save my life in 2002 . I found my mother dead and decaying in her home alone after nobody had heard from her for a week. The trauma, guilt ,the sights and smell would have been unfathomable for the average person to deal with. Emdr , was the therapy that helped me get over the hump and move forward one day at a time with my life. I highly recommend this therapy for anyone who is suffering from trauma.

What an excellent presentation on systematic desensitization, EMDR, and working with trauma. As a certified hypnotherapist, we share much of what was discussed here. Our process similar to EMDR is Emotional Freedom Technique Tapping or EFT. As imagery is the language of the unconscious mind, using the combo of creative visualization with tapping is profound. Establishing a sense of ease and calm as the tapping changes the emotional landscape around the triggering issue. This enables the client to be receptive to other aspects that arise connected to the presenting issue and as a domino effect, we collapse those aspects. We begin with the least on the scale of what we call the subjective units of distress or SUDs and work our way up to the largest trigger. In essence disarming or neutralizing the charge to the past event and adding positive or more useful associations. What is fascinating is what a client thinks the issue is one thing but as we tap and they enter a deeper state of relaxation tapping into the unconscious, other imagery comes forth that discloses as the real issue or root cause causing negative emotions or triggers. We can then clear those out. Subscribed! Amazing talk I’ve shared with my fellow colleagues as well🎉

@@DocSnipes Yes that would be great. It seems to lurk when I least expect it and it hinders me from being my self and I am easily triggered even though I’ve done so much intentional healing in the last 6 months, including taking time off and really taking on self care. I am in a better place than even a year ago but I have a life to live, a business to run, and things to do. I feel like I walk around with a heaviness on my shoulders that has limited my productivity, and has increased my vigilance and distrust in people. It’s almost as if my healing, accepting that psychological abuse did in fact happen and affected me, my father’s death, and my mother’s ongoing betrayal has left me numb at times and raising my arms up as if ‘what’s the point of all this!’ when the journey is harder seeing truth than being blind to it.

I've been wondering what's involved in EMDR and now I know - thank you for an excellent explanation. One question: Will it still work if the traumatic memory *doesn't* trigger distress? One memory fragment of a major trauma when I was a toddler comes to mind but when I picture it I don't feel distressed. I know it was distressing because I was screaming and crying, and I feel distressed when I'm in a situation that triggers the same feelings of helplessness. I'm thinking there is distress but I'm in freeze mode blocking it, like Ute's zero reaction to remembering her car accident in Bessel van der Kolk's book 'The Body Keeps The Score'. But how would I rate the level of distress in this case? (Note: No, not trying to do this alone, I fully heed your warning at the end and will seek an EMDR practitioner when I can afford it. I'm just curious.)
