Six Core Principles of ACT
Mindful contact with the present moment
De-fusion- Separate self from feelings / experience
Acceptance of what is
Values Identification
The Observing Self- Fly on the wall
Purposeful Action
"You can't stop the waves, but you can learn to surf" Kabat-Zinn 2004
Distracting oneself from distress is akin to constantly running away from one’s shadow. In the attempt to control the negative thoughts and feelings, one is at a loss for control in other life situations.
Symptom reduction is not a goal of ACT
Attempting to get rid of “symptoms” actually creates more distress
Private experience is labeled a symptom  a struggle with the symptom
A “symptom” is by definition something “pathological” and something we should try to get rid of.

Many of the skills in the videos are the same ones that are taought in a basic counselling course and can be used as a CBT therapist aid. CBT techniques are helpful tools for self counseling for major depressive disorder, anger management, confidence, self esteem, anxiety, abandonment issues, self improvement
Dr. Snipes' videos have been used by thousands for developing clinical skills for substance abuse counseling, cbt interventions for substance abuse, and skills needed for mental health counselor

I listen to your videos a night for thirty minutes and in the morning. Sometimes I journal when I’m listening. I work as a shuttle driver at a homeless shelter. Sometimes my job is very rewarding and fuflling. Other times I feel overwhelmed. But I know these videos are helping me create coping skills and work towards my own rich and meaningful life. I appreciate your presence on KZread. Thank you 🤗

How might ACT's focus on learning to live with distress instead of thinking we must eliminate it to have a happy life be a great tool for people in the current climate?

Wow, this might be helpful to teach clients. I'm 4 minutes in and this makes so much sense with how perception and relationships to people and reality can go wrong. Trauma can create a schema that provokes intense fear, helplessness, abandonment, opposition, etc that become the template for strategies that solve short term problems, but if they go unchecked become long term issues.
