Big hills to tow and big rough seas | Travelling to the Bay.

Hey everyone, this episode, we're towing from Rotorua to the Hawkes Bay over the Napier Taupo road, with it's large rolling hills. We spend a couple of days at the Nzmca part, a couple of days freedom camping at the eroding Clifton freedom camp and then we're back on the tarmac, staying with family. Napier is where I grew up. I love it here, the weathers generally good, there's lots to do, and all my family are.
I hope you enjoy this bit of a shambles episode, the next one is more my cup of tea, remote, and miles off the main rd.

The ocean sure is powerful. Weve done the Taupo Napier rd a few times wuth our Triton & 19ft caravan. We do run with water tanks about 1/4 though. We went to that camp out towards Cape Kidnappers a couple of years ago the sea was & the wind was just covering the place in salt. So we tuned around & went back to NZMCA park. It is a grest area though.

yea the salt spray was pretty intense when we were there as well. I felt like the Napier Taupo road was pretty easy, glad I did it, and know next time it will be pretty straight forward.

I SO wish my wife and I had done this with our kids. It was not the done thing in the 80s I guess. My 30+ year old kids are just learning about camping again! When we both retire, we will be off!

was a different time back then for sure. We never went on holidays, just to visit the grand parents was our holiday, we only went camping once and it was for a night, roughing it at the river, but I'm so glad we've taken the opportunity to do this.

Loving your travels! However, this has to be the saddest video yet. In Feb this year, we too saw first hand the damaged houses along the Te Awanga coast. But to see it from your drone, it really sinks in just how fast and how much the sea is reclaiming the land and all those houses that are going to become eaten up by the sea. And of course the Esk Valley from Cyclone Gabriele.

yea mate it's devastating. the erosion all over New Zealand is hard to bare, and the poor peoples whose lives have been changed forever... The West coast of the South Island is just as bad, check out Granity.... Eskview was our childhood christmas location I had an uncle who lived right next to the river by the Hukatere Maori girls school and my cousin who was 1 month apart in age, I spent a lot of time in the area, and it's so hard to believe, it's unrecognizable... I promise more happiness in the next one.

Great video...as always. I think the Te Awanga trailers to the gannets is no more. Looking forward to your next video down the coast. We did two separate day trips down to both Black Head and Aramoana this last summer. What a wonderful spot with the Marine Reserve down there. I'm expecting you were a bit south of that where you can get some kai moana. :-)

Good to see you guys working the brakes on the van ….. Arthur’s pass is on the cards …? One point I must mention…..if you go to the lowest gear possible, you will be slower than the slowest 🤣 …..and trust me!!!…you’re not holding up cars…because the stupid low safe speed is so low tgat any regular cars can pass at a breeze.!! Sorry I don’t think i asked…is your truck 4WD? If yes….you can tow your van in any nz road up and down every day safely 🙏❤️👌🙏😜😉🙃👌👌👌💐💐💐

  • @leopardsgowild

yes our truck is 4x4. I don't agree you can tow your van up and down any road in New Zealand safely. I don't know how much of New Zealand you have travelled, but this is not good advice. You maybe able to tow certain rigs and different configurations anywhere in New Zealand but not any thing with 4x4... We've been down some roads that are so steep you can't even see the road in front of you over the bonnet, we would have been in serious trouble if we had the caravan on in those instances. Law rd Dunedin was the worst we've had on tarseal with no caravan.
