Todd you are very humble. Your guitar work is exceptional, and nobody possesses your signature. Your instrument must always remain melodic, however it flows like a river with smooth portions and then rapids where you are almost in attack mode pulling the guts from your instrument while keep it melodic. Your bends and squawks are extraordinary. They tell me your musical roots and influences are imbedded in rhythm and blues, which is where most great soulful sounds like that of Warren Haynes originates. I just can never quite get enough of it. So get over it and good luck finding someone out there who will agree that you are merely an OK guitarist because you are definitely not.

The further I get into this video -- because I'm posting as I watch (3 posts now, maybe???) -- the more I think Todd truly "gets" how to write a song, or more specifically, why songs matter to the human experience.

Thanks Todd, really thoughtful and practical at the same time. CU Class of '89 - will never forget hearing you for the first time playing Stevie Ray Vaughn at an outdoor party and then your covers of songs like Chain Chain Chain at the FAC. You were always cordial and respectful to the rest of us no matter where you were in your musical success journey....PS. I'm an old time fan, so still like the guitar tone on Midnight Radio the best....

Awesome! Thanks for sharing. Also, I dig the poster of George Thorogood and the Delaware Destroyers! I grew up just outside of Boston when they were based there in the late '70s. I was in High School then but the youngest in family so I got exposed to awesome music early on. There was an excellent radio station there at the time, WBCN, that would play great music. When I went into 8th grade, my brother was in the Coast Guard stationed out of Galveston, TX and he saw Stevie Ray Vaughn and turned me on to him and Double Trouble (I caught the photo there in the background, I think). On January 4th 2020, I brought my brother to see BHTM at the Blue Note in Honolulu - the absolute BEST way that I could repay my brother for turning me on to such great music was to treat him to the best night of live music either of us have ever experienced! Stay healthy guys and we'll see you down the road! Aloha, Mark

Ok guitar player? I am an OK player and it’s taken me years to learn some of your songs. You’re spot in with being a fantastic songwriter but your guitar chops are nothing downplay. If anything, your stellar guitar ability is playing the right thing that fits the song. Not just speed licks. Thank you for all of the music.

Hey Todd I catch you guys everytime you come thru Portland. The 1st was the Horde festival in 92 I believe was.the year. . And have been a huge fan ever since. I've been to 500 + concerts over the years from Pink Floyd to Skinny puppy. And now that I'm older and work for a living I have to pick my concerts accordingly. The show I look most forward to is yours. Just today I ordered 5 to your show on the 22nd of Jan. The one thing I have to say. With All the covers you play. I think Psycho Killer by the Talking Heads..would be the perfect song for you guys to cover.. See you on the 22nd of Jan. God bless and be safe..

Also, notice how Todd immediately caught himself when he talked about Linda Ronstadt -- it's because he is the kind of person who doesn't want to use "shorthand" to dismiss an artist as "just" a singer. He gets it. Even "just" a sing can still add so much to a song, and oftentimes make it better.

I really need to get the old songbook out and get my music into digital form. Your tip on using a chord generator is my gem of the day. I found an online version since I don't use Apple products.

Thank you Todd! You provided beautiful gems for English teachers. I hope you don't mind if I share your video with my first year college students because I think your three points are applicable to writers of English papers too (and a lot more interesting than how I might put it) 1. You need to have to want to communicate something 2. Know your audience and 3. See if you can discern your themes because usually you'll get to the universal ones. Thanks for pointing out the difference between pleasure and universal themes and for talking about reading Shakespeare and how you read poetry!

Big fan for a long time. Ages ago I got to hang out on your tour bus after a show in Portland while Todd played Starcraft, haha. I'm not a musician or singer, but creativity is important to me. Thanks for the inspiration, great video.

This is great Todd thanks. If you ever get around to it, one of these vlogs on guitars, gear choices, and your approach to tone would be awesome!

This is great. It makes me feel better about my own songwriting process. Also great to see your two-notes torpedo live, and Magnatone amps make a cameo! I'm loving my new Magnatone amp.

Well, that's neat.. I'm glad i took my time in 2000 to figure out "dinner with ivan".. Honestly, it needed a wee bit of harmonica..

This video is incredibly helpful, the approach and philosophy behind the song writing process really offered a great perspective and template to work off of. As I am new to writing lyrics I would really like to take your advice on studying great poets but I'm not sure where to start. Could you offer a suggestion or two ? Thank you 🙏🤘😎🤘🎸🔊🎶🎧
