Big Gun Battleships! Sortie 1: hunting cargo ships

Ойындар

After over ten years away from the hobby, I have finally returned to the game of Big Gun R/C Warship Combat! In this sortie, Gascan's dreadnought battleship the SMS Tegetthoff, attacks and sinks two convoy ships while dealing with an escorting super-battleship.

On the one hand, I am deeply impressed by the degree of engineering implied by the fact that your guns are capable of reloading all on their own. On the other hand, I am equal parts amused and frustrated that the nature of your projectiles means you HAVE to hole them below the waterline to sink them, which in turn means you HAVE to get directly up in the other guy's business to have any real chance of making the shot. May as well build a Spanish galleon at that point.

A three deck battleship would be the best with 68 guns, but they will have to limit the reloading time according to the scale... I think it's 1:100, so 5 minutes of real reloading make 300sec:100= 3 seconds for a round...

For those wondering... The rules for these fights stipulates the belt armour has to be made of balsamic wood with a maximum specified thickness and water entering through holes in this area must be able to flow to the bilges (obviously the frame and the electronics housing can be armoured and waterproofed with anything you choose, often metal), and the number and size of bilge pumps is strictly limited according to class (so a battleship will have more bilge pumps than a transport ship). This is how it is possible to sink these ships with BBs. The ships also have floater buoys so when sunk you can easily fish them out.

@@thatsclassified1 Oh, ha ha ha, that humor. Now, if we consider they built everything from scratch, following rules regarding the materials, making every single sensitive component waterproof, and we're talking about sizeable models with revolving turrets, that fire and reload on their own, yeah, it'd be so crazy to grab a playmobil accesory designed some 50 years ago, already watertight, that runs on 1 AA battery, comes with a rudder, looks like a torpedo, and simply find a way to have it fall in the water and hit something. I'm pretty sure 20 years ago, if someone heard about this hobby as it is, would've laughed even harder about how impossible it'd be. And here they are. Well that's always been the story anyway, hasn't it? Across the Atlantic? - That's crazy. Get rid of horses to get one of those wheeled contraptions? Not gonna happen. Etc.

All the ships have a float, attached by a wire to the ship, so that it can easily be retrieved if (when) it sinks. Usually the float is a part of the superstructure made of foam that just comes loose and floats. All the electronics are sealed in watertight boxes so they (usually) survive the sinking, too. It'd be a really expensive hobby if you'd have to build a new ship every time you sank. It would be realistic though 😋 This sure looks like fun. I wonder if there are clubs doing this in the Netherlands, where I live.

Funny, half the comments asking questions that are clearly answered in the comments. Yes, the guns are angled downwards for safety, and to hole enemy ships below the water line so they take on water and sink. Yes, they're firing steel BBs. No, they're going to switch to firearms, no matter how small the caliber. No, they're not going to use explosives. Yes, the ships are recovered after they sink. No, the electronics don't have to be replaced after a sinking (well, almost never), they're sealed against water intrusion. Yes, torpedos may be possible but, no, not with explosives.

By the way, if you angle the ship, you can still point the two forward turrets at the enemy offering slight portions of the hull. Moreover the angle offers more chances to ricochet shells. If the models are properly made accordingly to real specifics, also the dynamics will not change too much. Of course you don't have comparable guns on board, but that will just increase further more the survivability of the ship.

@@ramiel7666 well I don't know the rules of this game. But showing broadside is the easiest way to get damage. Full broadside is a flat surface that can be penetrate even by smaller guns. Real BBs never do that. Iowa-class for example had a specific shape of her forward bow to allow her to deflect incoming shells.

@@danielefabbro822 I don't the rules of the game either, but just as a historical note, battleships showing each other 'broadside' was always the way they were expected to fight. In fact, the idea of 'crossing the T' (a tactic used through the dreadnought era and beyond) involves showing your full broadside to the bow or stern of your enemy, to reduce their ability to shoot back. Fighting in a battle line (as all battleships who weren't opperating alone were expected to) also makes it hard to 'angle', while getting all the ships in your line able to fire on the enemy. The Iowa class, as a note, was designed to have an 'immunity zone' where she could take fire from another 16" gun armed ship directly to her main belt/deck armour, so she could bombard a comparable target with near impunity (as long as the enemy hit her armour)!

In fact, modern ships almost always show full broadside, because it allows them to get all their anti-ship and CIWS in a position to fire.
