Big Bulls Don’t Come Easy: Montana Elk | S2E04 | MeatEater Hunts

Спорт

In this episode, MeatEater's Janis Putelis is joined by Zach Sandau of ‪@onXHunt‬ on a hunt for a trophy bull elk in eastern Montana. Janis has drawn a hard-to-get tag in an area with a real shot at a monster bull. It’s a dream tag for Janis. Zach and Janis look over dozens of bulls in search of “the one.”

I was lucky enough to draw a tough NV bull elk tag in 2015, and through a lot of hard work and persistence, I was able to pull the trigger on a dandy bull that scored 391.5. It's now hanging on my wall, and 7 years later I still look up at him in awe of how magnificently massive he truly is. I am truly grateful that I had the opportunity to harvest such an animal! Good luck to all the hunters who get tags this year, and more importantly stay safe and have fun!

The look of disappointment at Zach's face towards the end demonstrates his passion for hunting. It's like his facial expression is saying "don't blame family, and other commitments on not bagging a dang elk". Good job guys!

Very fitting that I watch this eposide after watching Steven finally get his "ONE" mule deer in S06E05. I remember watching years and years of hunts of Steven trying to find and shoot the ONE. I want Janis to be as excited as Steven was when he laid eyes on the ONE that he was going to shoot. Janis did not have anywhere the same feeling with this elk. Good for Janis for his restraint. It takes more conviction and character to be steadfast and true than to settle.

I've never hunted elk. There are elk in British Columbia where I live but I've yet to go after them. I have however, spent some time in the mountains of north-eastern BC hunting Stone sheep. I know what it's like to pass on decent rams when looking for "The One". Two weeks of slogging up and down mountain sides, scree slopes and sloshing through buck brush wears you down physically and emotionally. After ten or so exhausting days it's not difficult to understand why someone might lower their expectations and take a legal ram that isn't any better than one you took a few years ago. But if your original intention (and promise to self) was to only take a ram that would truly be your personal best, be true to yourself. Years later, having passed on a few legal rams you can be proud that you stayed the course. And when you do find "The One" as I finally did, it is so much more satisfying.

It always chaps my butt to hear anyone complain about trophy hunters, but then say hunting for meat is ok because you use the meat of the animal! They just don’t understand hunting. It doesn’t matter the size of the animal to use the meat. But trophy hunting is by far the bast use of the land. You go further, see more, SUFFER more, pass on smaller or less prime. Or sub par animals. It’s a challenge to go home with tag soup but it’s worth it to not just fill a tag when there’s always something else to see. Thank you for helping cut through the FOG of trophy hunting. More anti hunting, anti trophy hunting need to know the truth of trophy hunting. Tag soup taste pretty darn good knowing you didn’t settle, you seen some beautiful country, amazing animals doing what only nature wants them to do. Anti hunters only think nature should be closer to the roads or trails. They aren’t able and willing to get to where nature REALLY HAPPENS. Then cuss the ones that are willing and able, hand have the desire to to be wild with them for a little while. Keep on blouching! Good luck and god bless.

I dont care if people trophy hunt, as long as someone eats the meat. If you have deep pockets and can afford that type of hunt, hey, good for you. Im just a nobody that eats 4 or 5 deer a year, all taken legally in state, and my top drive is about 100 miles one way. If I had the time and money Id likely be doing some of these trophy hunts.

@@patrickbranon5444 : Im in Wisconsin, in a moderate sized city about 70k people, you can hunt private land in city limits now with a bow so that helps, those tags are free. Our normal tags are not like that, our gun tag is "buck only" but our bow tag is buck or doe. Our muzzleloader season starts right after gun season and you can use your unfilled gun tags. Our bow season starts in Sept and runs into January now. "Bonus" tags are bought for like 12 bucks apiece, its a shitty computer system now so if you work 1st shift you have to use vacation time to be at home in front of your computer as they do specific zones day by day, its bullshit, used to be way better with the bonus tags.
