Big Block Mopar: Water pump, Oil Pump, Fuel Pump, and Heads installed!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This is the Sixth video in a series of how to build a Big Block Mopar Engine. Using the steps in this series, you can build a big block Mopar at home. The engine being built is a 1970 RB 413 engine from a motorhome. I will be converting this engine into a nice street cruiser for a 74' model Dodge D100, that makes great torque and is very streetable. ‪@UncleTonysGarage‬ will hopefully follow along with this build.

    I use all Mellings oil pumps and I always open them up and inspect and CLEAN them. Also porting the oil pump to the block is a great idea too as the holes are normally way off from matching..

When pulling the engines apart it was most obviously way too much RTV used on the china walls. This is one of those times size can HURT! TOO MUCH and you can send several paychecks down the drain.... I have seen enough to seal a fist sized window in a motor.. Even worse, A few times it has been people I know who did it!!!

    When coming up in my diesel tech career, had the luck and pleasure of working under an old timer with eons of knowledge. He taught me that when torquing anything of importance, that you continued doing the final sequence, over and over, until no fasteners moved. "Didnt that one move??"... "Yup." "Ok, go around again"... He said that was the difference between good and perfect. When we're building engines, and Im looking over the kid's shoulders, they now hate hearing "didnt that one move?", but they're learning!!!🤣

    Thanks David. It wasn’t worth checking to me. We knew it’d be low with the dished stock pistons. The heads have been milled, but are the open chambered design. What is the advantage to those deep dish pistons? I used the factory flat top. Mine needs 93+ octane. We only have 91 here.

  • @JustMoparJoe

    @JustMoparJoe

    2 жыл бұрын

    This one definitely can go with 87 octane. The engine didn’t need bored at all, and the owner was trying to stay budget friendly. 413 pistons are usually 300$ more than 440 because of the odd bore size. This engine is in his d100 truck now. I hope to do an update video with it again.

  • @CatastrophicFarms
    @CatastrophicFarms7 ай бұрын

    Hey Joe, I know this is an old video but I'm hoping you can help me. I'm building a street/strip 413 myself and having trouble deciding on which heads to use. I have the factory 516 heads with the closed chambers and small exhaust valves, I was planning on putting bigger valves in since it needs hardened seats anyhow. I also have a single 452 and a single 346, bigger valves but open chamber. Can I mix and match those two heads? I'm going to run factory flat top replacement pistons so a little compression loss with the open chambers probably isn't going to hurt too much. Both sets need rebuilt so they are going to the machine shop regardless.

  • @JustMoparJoe

    @JustMoparJoe

    7 ай бұрын

    Thanks brother. If your budget allows, buy some 440 source heads and save the weight. Not to mention the flow benefits. However I understand using what you have and having a good engine. I would use the closed chambers and have the valves put in from the other two heads, or find another 452. They were nearly Identical to the 906’s, but with hardened seats. You can have them milled for a slight bump in compression. I know there’s plenty of stock cores out there that guys would sell for cheap.

    @@JustMoparJoe Thanks for your input, I appreciate it. I’m wanting to stick with the factory steel jobs even though I know the 440Source heads are probably better. I’m leaning towards running the 516s and using bigger valves I was just concerned if bigger valves might not flow well into the smaller 413 bore. I forget the term for it, but it’s when the air can’t get around the valve quick enough. Just out of curiosity, can that 346 head be mixed with a 452 or is that a bad idea?
