Talk Heathen is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared toward long-form and on-going dialogue with theists & atheists about religion, theism, & secularism. Talk Heathen is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop & support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing & friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of government-religion separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists & to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

    I agree. My parents are very judgmental fundamental Christians, and cannot answer logically and clearly my questions about "God's word," the Bible. It's so frustrating to have clear questions avoided, yet they insist I am deceived. It really is very childish and disrespectful to others.

    Robert have, over several calls, displayed a total skewed viewpoint on the world outside his church, including that the Middle East is in peril because the people there believe in false prophets; that people in Northen Europe are pathetic introverts who can't conquest and prevail because unlike Americans they're atheists; that Africa is in such a poor state because religion never reaches there (this one is particularly false and annoying). International viewer here. Watching your videos just confirms what I already suspected: too many people in the US scare me, too many of them sound completely insane, and if this is what we're getting at the beginning of the 21st century, I fear for the future. WTF went wrong over there, guys?! How can a place filled with so many smart, wonderful people be simultaneously so packed with evil-natured nutcases? Some people pray to God for salvation, but I'm almost praying to not-God for it myself. Religion destroys people's humanity, it seems. All these callers like Robert want is punishment for non-believers, revenge for their God, and to revel in their anger towards those who don't go along with their insanity. I'm sending lots of love to you guys, because my lack of belief actually leaves me empty of hatred, and with plenty of room for good thoughts and hope that we become better when God finally leaves us alone. thegoodlisteners listenwell FlatEarthers and creationists CLAIM they use and understand science, that's one aspect of Dunning-Krueger! 80% of people think of themselves as above average intelligence, another aspect. For example, I have a rough idea how basketball is played, but I don't know how much don't know about basketball.... i have no idea how big the subject is. I studied mathematics at university, and because of that exposure to the subject I know that my knowledge of higher mathematical ideas is tiny! When FlatEarthers and creationists explain the reasons why their little ideas are true, it always seems that they say they know everything about all the scientific fields involved, which is obviously not true. Too wordy ! ;●)

    Apophenia - the tendency to perceive a connection or meaningful pattern between unrelated or random things. It's more commonly associated with pareidolia for theists, when they find the face of Jesus on toast, etc. Edit: but yes - exactly what tends to happen. They seem to think their "common sense" is stronger than cold hard math and science, and use the false positives as testaments to their faith, without ever stumbling over the logical fallacies used to construct their world view.

    In the muddle ages, the religious "authorities" did not want the Bible translated into English. William Tyndale, the most dangerous man in England, was burnt at the stake for doing it. They knew, that if the general public were able to read the Bible, there would be trouble. Having an English Bible was the beginning of the end. The entrance to the exit, as Popeye once said.

    @@derkaiser1306 It's prettt clear Hitler was actually theist, not anti-theist (and from the looks of it, not exactly Christian either). He definitely spoke about being a Christian, whether or not he believed it is under debate (academics don't think so). But too many of the things he reportedly said in private amount to him believing in some sort of creator, even if it's not necessarily the God of the Bible.

  • @hyronvalkinson1749

    @hyronvalkinson1749

    @@derkaiser1306 From one source: Not surprisingly, Hitler was much preoccupied with Christianity and the Catholic and Protestant churches in Germany. Weikart takes to task scholars, most notably Richard Steigmann-Gall, who, in part based on Hitler's early conciliatory tone toward the churches, concluded that Hitler was "a sincere Christian, at least until 1937" (p. 71). Weikart instead contends that "the evidence is preponderant against Hitler embracing any form of Christianity for most of his adult life" (p. 105). Aside from his vicious private condemnation of the churches and "Christianity with its meekness and flabbiness," a careful reading of Hitler's speeches that are often cited as proof of his Christian faith reveal such a distorted conception of Christianity that few would recognize it as such. Hitler endorsed a kind of Kampfchristentum (Christianity of the sword) that cast Jesus as "a pugnacious antiSemite" in order to persuade Christians to join in his persecution of Jews.

Robert has put on a suit and a fake pair of glasses and positioned a full length mirror so he can watch himself strut around whilst talking into his headset. Sometimes he sits at a desk and shuffles papers. Sometimes he pretends to address an imaginary jury.

    The foundations of morality are extremely simple. The religious, I suspect deliberately, over complicate it to create a problem for their imaginary friend to solve

  • @byebry

    @byebry

    I think it's more accurate to say the religious oversimplify the execution of morality - at least on the surface. They reduce morality to rules, but we all know that's not how it works. Very few theists actually think "thou shalt not lie" is a commandment that should always be adhered to.

  • @dougware5649

    @dougware5649

    5 жыл бұрын

    Yes, although the over complication comes in via the interpretation of scripture in order to justify virtually any otherwise unwholesome act. For instance, while it isn't an actual verse, one repeated theme seems to be to "win the lost at all costs" - which justifies the lies you mentioned, as well as far worse. Without theism, we might still have some forms of "the ends justify the means" thinking, but I doubt it would be as prevalent in our society as it is now.

    Speaking as someone who is also on the spectrum, I think Robert is autistic. He's hyper-focused on his own points to the point that he's unable to engage in meaningful dialogue about them. All he can do is reject the current conversational thread when he realizes he's hit a contradiction, and go back to parroting himself as if that explains it perfectly. He also takes every thought experiment you try to walk him through extremely literally. i.e., "That's Earth," instead of answering the more abstract question that was actually asked. My own "autistic superpower" is generally in being able to communicate with anyone but I'm not sure if Robert isn't a lost cause, at least on this topic.
