Gambaccini is speaking out of his ass when he tries to downplay Mariah Carey, her influence is just as huge with regard to the Hip-Hop/RnB collaboration as well as the melismatic phrasing that she helped popularize in 1990.

InterestingName He didn't downplay Mariah. He said that Whitney has infunded classical technique into Gospel/R&B and so she has influenced other singers, starting with Mariah, to do the same.

Actually, he DID downplay Mariah Carey...if you listen closely, he said Mariah was "trying" to do what Whitney did, but Whitney sang with more feeling. I agree "to a point." Mariah was amazing in her "prime" but her voice lacks the raw power that Whitney had. Mariah was still a great singer none the less.
