I adore Betty and have watched and re-watched the interviews over the years. Her energetic enthusiasm is almost manic at times. I don't believe she was as happy as she portrayed herself to be. Her upbeat attitude is very infectious and is very endearing. But I think it was way of covering up her true feelings. Don't get me wrong I think it's great to have a good attitude and face the world with a smile. But deep down I still think Betty was very unhappy and this was her way of coping. I also think her belief in her faith bordered on obsession. The fact that even after she reconnected with her daughters, her relationship with them was off and on over the years until her death. I don't believe that Betty is fully to blame for the strained relationship with them. While I think it's very sad that their relationship was such at the end that they didn't attend her funeral. They had their reasons and I think people who judge them for not attending are only doing so because their Mother was Betty Hutton.

After the death of her mentor, Father Maguire, Hutton returned to California, moving to Palm Springs in 1999, after decades in New England. Hutton hoped to grow closer to her daughters and grandchildren, as she told Robert Osborne on TCM's Private Screenings in April 2000, though her children remained distant. She told Osborne that she understood their hesitancy to accept a now elderly mother. The TCM interview first aired on July 18, 2000. The program was rerun as a memorial on the evening of her death in 2007, and again on July 11, 2008, April 14, 2009, January 26, 2010, and as recently as March 18, 2017 as part of TCM's memorial tribute for Robert Osborne. Hutton lived in Palm Springs until her death March 12, 2007, at 86, from colon cancer complications. She is buried at Desert Memorial Park in Cathedral City, California. [Citation courtesy of TCM]
