Betty Hutton plays "Bessie Day" in the 1942 Paramount Pictures production "The Fleets In". Hutton steals the movie from headliner Dorothy Lamour. This number was written specifically for Ms. Hutton by Johnny Mercer and Victor Schertzinger.

Anyone else only know about this song because of "Big Top Pee-Wee?" It's what Pee-Wee and his animals are playing in the cellar while the storm is raging outside. Since I was really young, I've never forgotten this song and the sound of this lady's voice.
Betty Hutton is one of my favorite actresses, singers, dancers and entertainers! I love this number! I was born in 1978. Thank you for posting and sharing this movie magic! I love it!
This was Betty s movie debut and this song made her an overnight success. I say this is her song, not Helens. It was wartime and we needed cheering up and Betty was the one to do it.
Loved this ever since hearing a very brief excerpt of it playing the background in a scene in Big Top Pee Wee. Betty Hutton was a real doll

She's great. So animated and entertaining. You can't help but watch her lol
In case nobody knows, today was Betty Huttons 99th Birthday! She passed in 2007.
She’s so excellent.
I get to sing this song for a theater masterclass, and i have never been so excited.
Big top pee wee go this song stuck in my head.
This song really starts at 0:54 in my opinion. haha Just watched Pee-Wee's Big Top with my kids, been a while since I watched the flick, and I remembered this song from the scene where he is in the basement with the animals having a party waiting for the storm to pass. Luckily now that KZread exists, I can find the original tune and fully enjoy it! KZread is about the closest thing to a time machine we have today!
Can someone find me a time machine? Betty is too cool.

Music by Victor Schertzinger. Why don't people take the time to give credit to the writers. Thanks for mentioning Mercer, one of the all time great lyricist.

Arthur Murray himself was aghast at the song - until someone told him that the only thing the audience would remember was "Arthur Murray Arthur Murray" etc and that it was great free publicity.
There's nothing to be afraid of, it's only a storm...

One wild thing.. Betty ❤️
I like how Pee wee herman dances with his lamb to this song RIP paul
She’s Cute ❤️🥺
So fantastic... bravo
@hebneh - here are some funny factoids about Arthur Murray's reputation in another song and on a sitcom: - In 1946, Desi Arnaz starred in the film Cuban Pete, and recorded a song of the same name, featuring the lyric, "Cuban Pete doesn't teach you in a hurry like Arthur Murray/You're now in Havana, and there's always mañana". - In an episode of Sanford & Son, when asked to dance, Fred says "I've been told I can't dance." The young lady says, "Arthritis?", Fred responds, "No, Arthur Murray."
I love Betty Hutton and as for Arthur Murray he had tons of dance studios I'm sure he really didn't care who made fun of him or talked about him, he was rich because of it.

Damn I love Betty Hutton!
Themovie is "The Fleet's In." The song was written by Johnny Mercer, lyrics and Victor Schertzinger, music.
There is a radio promo for this movie that I have on vinyl that has an unedited version of this performance that is amazing.
One of my favorites

A really multi-talaented lady. So funny & beautiful too.

This song was nominated for best song, but lost to the music score of the Bette Davis classic Now,Voyager in '42.
She sure knew how to sell a number!
Played in the Big Top Pee Wee
In an era where I didn't think women were allowed to act like that, Betty Hutton proved me wrong in epic ways and I love it!

Oh, a lot of 'em did; it's just that manners were more valued in them days than they are now-- more's the pity.

Katy Perry aint got nothing on this.
ha ha ... not sure if Ms. Head would want to that to be attributed to her, but maybe you're right! I'll have to look at the credits at the end of the movie sometime and see. Thx for the comment.
WOW!!! Betty Hutton RAPS at 1:50
The female Danny Kaye! But, I think she came first, so he's the male Betty Hutton.

And I thought the Dorsey/OConnell version was good! The band members acted well, as they didn't break out laughing. Another actress who could get carried away, but not by this much, is Zelma O'Neal in "Follow Through" (1930).
Betty Hutton had amazing vocals and facial expressions! I did a little re-enactment of this fun tune: kzread.info/dash/bejne/naWhrbate73Weqg.html
It starts around the 2:18 point: kzread.info/dash/bejne/eIl32MpvqJTNeNY.html
I'm surprised that the lyrics of this song are actually somewhat derogatory in describing the Arthur Murray dance studio chain. She's saying that she really didn't end up being able to dance, and while that's partly her fault due to her own lack of talent, the lessons were "in a hurry" and not satisfactory. I can only assume that Arthur Murray himself thought that any publicity, even if it wasn't completely positive, was better than none. Especially if this was free.
