I'm reading the auto-biography that Carl and Michael Mayer helped her write. I think the reason she was so insecure is because she had such a terrible childhood. Her mother was an alcoholic who sold booze during the Prohibition. And they were always bouncing around from one dump to the other trying to stay ahead of the cops. And her mother was constantly bringing home different men who would physically abuse Betty, her mother, and Betty's sister. This all happened when she was a little kid. But luckily for Betty, she found Jesus later in life and that helped turn her life around. And also lucky for her that she found Carl, Michael, Gene, and Father MacGuire. They provided Betty with a stable, secure, safe, home environment. Something Betty never had as a child.

Betty and her three adult children were interviewed on television as having a reconciliation of sorts. What went wrong? Why did they once again become estranged? None of her three children showed up for her memorial. No one seems to want to talk about that.
