BETTER than an Orton Effect!
Have you ever wondered how specific photos just have that "look"? You know, the look that makes you say, "WOW! That Photo is INCREDIBLE! They must have a nice camera!"
Haha, truth be told, it's never really the camera, is it?
I have found that many images that have that look draw me into specific areas of the photo to grab my attention. This is a DELIBERATE action!
There are many ways to grab the viewer's attention, but today I will reveal my secrets for building a fabulous glow. I use this technique in nearly every one of my images, and I couldn't live without it.
Some people call this the "Orton Effect," but this is not really an Orton Effect because it uses a different process. I prefer to call it a glow or radiance effect.
Enjoy and remember to experiment!

Thank You, this was definitely one of the best tutorials I ever watch, clear, explaining the reasons behind the choice of effect and letting us the freedom to explore it our selves, great voice tone and pauses on the speech! Congrats.

That is definitely a great application for it.
Ooh, that was fun and informative. I was following along and just completely transformed an image into something I liked into something I loved. Using a solid color and then stacking a channel mixer (Lum blend) on top let me lift and push the glow right where I wanted it.
Blake - thanks for this tutorial. I really like adding an "Orton type glow" to most of my landscapes. This video explains color vs tone in a basic and easy to understand way.
last example was awesome

Thank you for continually thinking out of the box and sharing those techniques with us, Blake. There is now way I will be using the "Rudis Glow" on my portraits without mentioning this video. Very impressed with the level of refinement this workflow offers and love the creative possibilities from those solid color/channel mix layers. Another masterclass, Sir!

@@f64Academy please keep it up, your sheer passion really shines through! One question: any reason why I should not change the blending mode of the initial base blur layer to SoftLight vs Linear? In my experience, the effect is a little too strong on color saturation/contrast in landscape shots. Maybe a matter of taste, but the shadows also lose texture and block up on my very contrasty scenes. I am hesitant to over-use the curve/level adjustment to retrieve those shadow details when using Linear Light. Thanks again!
fantastic! love a bit glow in some of my landscapes and some portraits, this has way more options to work with! Thanks for this tutorial, im gonna give it a go on a few portraits i recently took as well as some autumn color landscapes!! 🙏🏼🙏🏼 always great learning here!
Hi Blake, Thank you so much for another useful and interesting video. I really liked your explanation of how the blur acts as a dodge and burn technique. This is a workflow that will be easy for me to use in practice without an Action.
Another outstanding tutorial, Blake!

I won’t lie, at the beginning of the tutorial, I thought, this is lame I’m not trying this. But when you got the end with the portrait, my mind was changed. It was broken down to capture my interest! Definitely subbing now! Thank you!

Thank you for a very well explained and useful colour and light technique video. I have one question and apologise in advance. When experimenting with the luminance values through curves etc how do you know when you have pushed your highlights too far and they are clipped. I am familiar with the highlight warning in lightroom but never sure in PS particularly when processing for print?
Another great presentation, Blake! You are touching on issues that I've been struggling with, and you DO make things much clearer. Keep up the fine work!

I appreciate it but it is impractical. People spend too much time in a single photo. That's why I use lightroom and an old fashioned Orton effect when necessary, which is more than enough for me.

True, but this is for those images that need that extra time. That's kinda like saying all cake is better without icing, sure some cakes are, but not all of them 😎
