Better Organic Supports for your 3D Prints
Ғылым және технология
I just saw @MakersMuse video on his support settings, so I thought I'd share my favorite Organic Support settings for my larger prints + a setting that I cant stop using!

For those who print in ABS/ASA. another super helpful tip for easily removable supports is to crank up the fan on support interfaces. Those filaments need less cooling for better layer adhesion, so when you want less adhesion for supports, turn up the cooling. Orca has a specific setting for "Support Interface Fan Speed". I would imagine other slicers have that as well.

ohhhh I wonder if that would also help with some of the PLA that i've used where it pretty much fuses with the part

WORD OF WARNING: DO NOT use the "Make Overhangs printable" setting if you're printing something with parts that you'll have to assemble later. It can change the geometry of the parts that have to fit together, which will, therefore, no longer fit together. It happened to me, don't let it happen to you.

Wish I'd seen this sooner! I have suffered the same fate, not knowing that part of changing the geometry can actually cause the connection holes to be filled. Also found that the pieces have very different surfaces once this is done. They weren't even close to fitting.

Just printed a 36 hr print with these settings and the supports came off like a champ!! Dude you rock.
Worth noting that the "make overhangs printable" is a setting that was added to Orcaslicer in the last couple of versions. It took several months of development.
Great settings tips, thanks for the tips on how to maximize tree supports. The printable overhangs option is so powerful, hopefully it will make it to all the sliders soon!
I use those settings especially the branch diameter but another one to use if you just want the branches to withstand a tall trunk add a wall to the branch in the "Tree branch wall loop" and will turn your custom branches into the strong preset or even stronger depending on how many loops you add (strong has 2 by default).
All the support settings videos! I just watched the MakersMuse video and I'm excited to have more information out here to get better prints!
I appreciate that you explained the settings your changing! My flimsy tree supports have been getting knocked off half way up, and I want to remedy this. I'd love to see a video of EVERY tree support setting explained - there's so much to know!
I sliced a storage box with latch and lid today in Orca Slicer.. It had one perimeter of an overhang that was either going to fail or need 7 hours worth of supports generated around the entire print. "Modify overhang to make them printable" saved me. It literally removed this one extrusion of an overhang and then bam! No supports needed at all. Being a former Cura Kool-aid enthusiast, Orca Slicer has me now. It's so good, and slicing time is souch faster than in Cura.
Thanks for the tips. I just used slim tree supports in Bambu studio and it cut the filament usage down by well over 200… amazing difference
So good! I'll try these tweaks out - especially bumping up the branch diameter. The modify geometry stuff is wild but I'd be scared of ruin part accuracy.
"branch diameter angle" can also be used to make sure the tree supports are anchored down properly. If you increase it, the branches start out thicker by the bed and then become thin like they normally are near the model.

lol i put mine 2 zero for small prints its like perfectly uniform tree branches
Thank you 🙏 so much your setting worked great I was having a lot of problems removing supports It didn't matter which support it was. just finished printing a big print in the supports came out like butter thanks again 😀
just did my first bust and used supports and def will look into Cura about that setting you mentioned in the end of the video. Very cool
Of course these come out on the last couple hours of my longest print to date these would have been helpful to make it less stressfull! Thought i was going to loose my print and was definitely understanding where makers muse was coming from
Thanks for the info! Trying a troublesome print now with your suggestions
This is great! Thanks!
Tried using the 'make overhangs printable' setting on something that had needed hollow areas inside and it filled it completely and made it solid, something to look out for.
My main thought on the Makers Muse video as well was that you could accomplish similar results using organic supports by tweaking the settings. They are very versatile, but can take a lot of tuning. By varying the settings you can also dramatically increase or decrease print time.
This was beyond helpful been running standard top surface at .2 mm causing fusing almost everytime. Life saver!!!!!
I was just thinking, "aww, but what if I want organic supports?" And Uncle Jessy said, "I got u fam."😊 This is why this community is awesome.
I used your setting on my supports today and was amazing, they stayed stuck to the bed when I pulled my print off. Ended up with a prefect print.
Great tips man!
5:21 - Bambu Slicer has a setting under Supports called "Remove Small Overhangs". It sounds like this is their implementation of "Make Overhang printable" to some extent.
Thank you….this has been driving me crazy but makes so much sense now….MOAR HELMETS
Nice! I was wondering what that “make overhang printable” setting did. Thanks! 5:16
HA, I JUST finished the Makers Muse video. Time for more info, especially for Organic. Thank you!
These are great tips !!!
Make overhang printable is very useful for something that might have protruding lettering, it just makes a small angle on the underside of the letters
I’m not a Prusa Slicer user and use Cura 5.4/5.5 a lot. You’re right about support z distance. With larger nozzles and thicker layers, you definitely want to experiment with that setting (Support Interface). I also reduce support density to 2 or 3%. Much as people should run temp towers and flow cubes to dial in settings, I do support test prints since different brand materials can behave differently. So for my prints using a 0.8 or 1.0 mm nozzle, with 0.30 layer height, there’s isn’t a real golden rule on what’s best. Print safe and experiment with your settings 🤓
Thanks for sharing ! Just subscribed to your Patreon. Way to go Uncle Jessy !

NICE. I had the z distance down, but never heard of that last setting.

Thank you for this! It greatly helped. Before hand my supports were blocky, solid and pretty much fused around and to the portions I was trying to add support to. One thing I would have to ask is "when is it better to lay an object down or even flip it upside down for better printing results?"
Regarding those two neon green guys at the end. What's the actual difference with them? Because when you tilt them, the failed one has a printed bottom and the successful one seems to be hollow?
when will you be getting the giga id love to see your review on it?
Nice I need some new methods to use for supports!
Are you going to show some settings for the Elegoo Neptune 3 Max ?
Did you use organic supports with SLA printers too? or it is useful just for FDM?
thank you
If I use that setting is it possible to make only certain areas still use supports?
in bambu slicer isnt it the 'remove small overhangs' one?
can organic supports be used for resin? and how?
Any Suggestions for support settings when printing PETG?
What version of Orca do you have becuase the versions of Orca that I downloaded do not have that many options for supports.
Cool!
I been using Orca Slicer and just using auto tree support for everything. Have had no issues on my Elegoo 4 MAX from small to large prints.

Hi Uncle Jessy, Awesome content. In one of your videos you said some thing to the effect of being willing to help with problems. I am looking for help with two things, First you said you could help with settings for the Ender 3 Pro print profile? Second I have a Sain Smart Corception 300 and cannot get it to work, the problem is once I load a print file and have verified a level bed the printer moves to it's start position then as extrusion starts the bed drops about 10 mm so all I end up with is is a plastic lump. Can you ( I hope) help me with this? Please accept my sincere thanks in advance as I have been frustrated by this for over a year.
I am extremely new to this 3d world new as in 1 day ago. Im using creality cloud since i have the ender v3 se. My supports dont have these settings at all. Is there another program i can use for this or am i sol?
What is the deal with Lychee slicer for filament printers? Is it any good? I love it for my resin printer but just got a Neptune 3 Pluss and was looking into what slicer to use or to just stay with Lychee. Help Uncle Jessy, you're my only hope...
Just a quick question. What version of Cura are you using? When I try to use tree supports it looks like a cocoon around my print and turns into a nightmare trying to remove it without destroying the model. Versions 5.0 and 5.5 are not working for me.
So it basically reduces the angle of overhangs?
My main issue with organic supports is the slicer putting some beyond the print range on big objects, meaning it refuses to print.
Probably a silly question but where is your get orca slicer from for Mac? After doing several searches in there’s nothing obvious. Thanks!
if you have a prusa XL, why not just use dissolvable support material on one of the other extruders?
Having owned a 3dprinter just for a week or so, Ive also seen that you should also try rotating objects so you can use less support. Also playing with infill, if it doesent need strength - a lot of people will say lightning 40%, but Ive seen some parts actually print quicker with a gyriod 5-20%, which is much stronger. But some object do print slower with gyriod... So I am kindof like considering: what is needed and then slice, then try some other settings, slice. Compare grammes of filament used and print time, also considering that some times you may see print time reduce, but you increase the risk of prints not going well.
Does anyone know how in Cura you can get the bed adhesion layer on the outside of the tree supports currently it seems to only do it on the inside
nice video jess you could of put all your settings in a 3mf file .saving ower eye strain lol tip
Where did you get Neptune 4 max settings for orca Jessy? :D

I've been thinking about using tree supports but PETG is SUPER STRONG and getting the parts off will be a huge challenge
Creality print has "Make Overhangs Printable" also.
Yay! Be well be you
There's an option in Bambu Studio to "remove small overhangs" isn't that the same as "make overhangs printable" ?

That's what I was just wondering. Wondering if it's just worded differently.
I just have an issue with smaller detailed prints. I feel like the supports cause warping to my item or weird layering issues
There is no neptune 4 max settings on prusa slicer only on old elegoo
what slicer you use ?
I'm not finding "make overhang printable" in the latest Cura.. is it called something else there? EDIT: Its under experimental
Would these work in resin?
how to get similar supports in cura 5.6 ?
+1👍 make overhangs printable 🤯🙌
I don't know if anyone has answered this yet, but what filament was used for the horns showed in the beginning of the video?

Awesome 🇦🇶
if I had to guess it's not in those slicers because it's FOSS licensed. I haven't paid tooooo much attention to the licensing of slicers, but I know the reason a lot of them are open source is because they *_have_* to be. As in, part of the license says 'if you fork this project and make a derivative it must share the same license, you cannot modify this code without making those modifications open source' and I've heard that at least the bambu slicer is proprietary. Again, flying by wire here, got no proof of any of this, but I'm guessing it's a feature that was implemented by the community as FOSS code meaning it can't be ported to proprietary slicers without them either using a GPL-condom or FOSSing their slicers.
whats the mas 0:24 seconds in?
Jessy, I love the idea of what the Prusa XL is, but the fact they don't have any more until sometime next year, the price, and also not knowing if it's going to need constant tweaks to keep it running well have me leaning towards maybe getting an AMS and either a PS1 or X1C. I've been 3D printing for almost 2 decades, and I'm so over having to spend more time constantly fighting with or repairing printers thank I am spending actually getting useful prints. I don't want the printer to be a project, I want it to be a useful tool for making other projects, and short run products. Do you think I should put off getting a printer until the XL is available again next year, or should I just get a Bambu? I know how to manually tune printers, and keep tweaking them to keep them running, but I don't ever want to have to do it again, if possible.
cant the top Z distance only be a multiple of your layerheight? so 0.25-0.28 makes absolutely no sense if you have a layer height of 0.2
time for me to convert to Orca slicer 😁😁😁

But often you need way less of them than with any other supports, making the overall print time much faster. In Prusaslicer use the automatic paint on supports tool to only get supports where it is really needed.
