1. "Friction Blocks" to attach the boards suitcase-style for easier portability and storage.
2. Handles
3: *Optional 27' cords to keep the playing distance a no-brainer. Enjoy!

Thanks for sharing your way to make these boards. I modified them a little and made a set for my daughter as a Christmas gift. I inlayed my tops instead of the overlap method but I think after doing so your method is the better way to go. Also I added a light inside the hole and they turned out great. She loved them.

So, wet sanding seems to me to give a much more consistently smooth finish. Also, it seems less likely to damage the edges. After the initial heavy coats fully dry for a day or so, spray water and orbital sand with 320 grit. Wipe, allow it to dry, apply final coat or two. Turns out really nice and streak free.

I think you’re applying decals to a stained board, that’s totally fine. If you’re applying stencils as a mask to paint designs over a stained background, it’s best to poly first to protect the stained area. The mask can pull up some of the stained wood fibers when you remove it. Hope this helps!

  • @cornholecollective7116

Never leave them outside. If they do get wet, wipe them down soon after. Outdoor poly will yellow a lot and harden to the point the boards are too slick. If you don’t want a predictable slide, give it a shot but I like to keep boards in the garage and they last a very long time.

  • @cornholecollective7116

Cloudy usually meant 1 of two things, water was added to the clear coat which changes the finish and makes it foggy, or 2, additional coats were applied before the previous dried enough. The only thing I can suggest is to carefully sand it smooth and try thin coats of fresh clear.

My support board is just off enough that the two boards don't match perfectly for the friction blocks the way you describe. Rather than fitting the blocks tightly on either side of the brace, would placing them further apart still achieve the same effect of clamping the boards together? I imagine the boards could slide a bit length-wide but they'd probably hold together for the most part. Not ideal but do you foresee a big issue? Thanks so much for all your videos.

I would be careful with wood wax. While it feels amazing, it can come off on the bags and continue reapplying it’s self to those boards or others if used in other boards. In my experience sunny conditions caused bags to slide back off the boards if they don’t go into the hole.

This is a tricky one because you’ll want to seal the board with poly and poly doesn’t adhere to glossy paint well. It might appear to hut in no time the layers over the glossy area will peel up and look terrible. The glossy paint doesn’t make a lot of sense considering the whole board will have to have the same sheen for the bags to slide right. I’d say use normal acrylic paint and glossy water based poly if you want them shiny.

Absolutely. Not sure if or how much clear coat is already on them but I’d probably clean them first, then do all the steps in the video. Turn down the lights and turn on some soft music, place your stencil using the shadow from the hole to center the vinyl stencil or mask. BOOM, perfectly centered vinyl around the hole.

Sometimes parks is used and filled back up with water, returned and put back on the shelf. This can cause a white haze. I’f you’re able to wipe with a damp rag and haze disappears (only to return when it dries) you need new poly. Do a coat from this Jew jug Sometimes the poly dries on the outside encapsulating some wet poly that is milky and to solve that, the boards should just need time in the sun Those a are two of the more common milky issues with poly that ive seen. Good luck, it’s certainly frustrating

I would assume that the costs of clear were applied too quickly. Just a thought. I’ve had that happen before when I applied thick coats before the previous had dried enough.

Loved the complete set of videos. I've made maybe about a dozen set of boards to date, but this is the first set I built following your instructions. I used birch tops as you suggested. My design will have a large car decal on each with a painted border around the boards and painted stripes from the sides up to the hole. I sanded the tops with 320 grit sandpaper. I applied the tape and painted. I still have to apply some pinstriping over the painted surfaces. My issue now is some of the surface is rough after being painted. I'm worried the pinstriping will bleed because the painted surface is a bit rough in some areas. I can work around that as I can touch up the painted surface if it bleeds. Once I apply a few coats of the poly, will the sanding take down the rough areas that developed after painting or should I sand the painted surfaces first and recoat if necessary before applying the poly? Thank you!

Hey Dave! Thanks so much. I don't paint often but when I do, I usually use acrylic paint, it lays much flatter is is much thinner so you can often apply it like a stain and see the wood grain. Given your situation, I'd poly first then when dry, sand that smooth with 320 grit paper. It should knock down the fibers and paint edges without risking the paint itself. THen apply decal, then apply a couple final coats of poly. Hope that helps.

@@cornholecollective7116 Thanks for the quick response. Just to be sure, you are suggesting two coats of the poly (I'm using the Pro Parks you suggested) and then sand. Then add the decals on top of the poly? Then two more coats of poly?

Two or three coats, let that sit a few hours, sand with 320, wipe free of all dust, apply decal, final 2-3 coats and you should be great.

Do you poly the frames or just the deck?

We poly all outside surfaces (including outside of frames). Poly is really only for game play purposes and the occasionally spilled beer, so poly on the underside will provide no protection from a rain storm. I equate the care and finishing of cornhole boards to that of a coffee table. Hope that helps

Any downsides to spraying the poly?

No downsides, it’s very common. I don’t build enough to justify the setup for a real spray room and the overspray was significant. Used a lot more clear with sprayer.

Would this method of sealing work over sharpie?

I’d suggest spraying a water based poly first then the liquid over that. Try a test piece first. It’s what I always use the hole cutouts for. Should be good.

1/2" and 5/8" depending on what my hardware store has on hand. Both are good.

I have a US Cutter model MH721. This may be an old model but it has served me well for 5 or 6 years. had to replace the motherboard once, a fairly common problem.
