Best watercolour brush stroke - simple exercises to master your brush

Ойын-сауық

Sad to say that there is no such thing as a magic brush! No one brush, however expensive or special is going to transform your work, but mastering your brush by practicing a few simple exercises will make a huge difference.
In this film we will explore what to look for in a brush and then how to use both the belly and the point to create one of the most versatile and useful brush strokes. Is this the best brush stroke? I may have gone too far, but it will tach you so much. I will show you how by using this brush stroke in different sizes and colours you can create fantastic florals and beautiful botanicals. At the end I show you a speeded up example of a watercolour wreath. If you want to see this process in full, I am in the middle of editing the film!! Should be available 26 June 2022.
Even if you do not like stylised botanicals, mastering this brush stroke will put you more in control as you paint.
I aim to make and share a tip, trick or technique each week. So please like and subscribe. If you hit the bell button you will be notified when the next one is available.
If you are looking for more in depth training, you might want to consider my online courses, which are available at www.lizchadertonstudio.co.uk and if you fancy staying in touch, I do a fortnightly update. You can sign up easily by going to www.lizchaderton.co.uk.

Smashing video ! Especially since you got great results with an inexpensive brush. Would you consider doing one on your favourite brushes for working on canvas? I'm happy with the ones I use on paper but won't risk using them on canvas but am unsure which ones to get that will work well on the rougher surface. Many thanks.

I recommend synthetic brushes, as the canvas surface is rough. Jackson’s Studio Synthetic are pretty good

Neat video. I enjoyed it. I have several Chinese brushes like the one you demonstrated. I sometimes use them in washes to good success. Kathryn

I was pleasantly surprised with the brush. I just want to show its how you control the brush rather than the brush itself….

Hiya Liz, I recognised the Jackson's Raven brush as I have two and I love them. For me, they're the perfect balance of hairs and hold plenty of Paint and release it only when I want, and they're affordable. Thanks very much, take care.x

This was so awesome! Could you do more tutorials on different brushes and how to use them? I have a Hake brush and can’t figure out how to use it 😊 I was feeling sort of uninspired today and then I watched this tutorial and now I’m off to get my brushes and to practice! Thank you, as always for sharing!
