Three watercolour mistakes and bad habits to avoid - stop them now!

Ойын-сауық

If someone tells you you are wrong, it puts your back up, doesn't it? So, sorry in advance. I want to point out three (well four) bad watercolour habits you really should avoid. And of course, how to avoid them.
When someone says 'you should', I usually do the opposite. I don't like rules and generally in painting, if it makes you happy, just do it whether it is 'right' or 'wrong'. But honestly, these three (well four), are fundamental. One might save your health, one will save your brushes and the other will save your colours. And that mystery fourth one?? It might just save your sanity and your love of painting.
So, this is all about the bad habits you should avoid, or break if you already have them. I mention a new Facebook Group where you can share your art and techniques. You can find it here:

Hiya Liz, thanks for the great tips. The man licking the brush is revolting and dangerous. In the old days when some of the paints were really toxic, like the Arsenic based Veronese green, more than one artist had died licking their brush. Take care and stay safe x

Great video and tips. Thank you. I've seen people licking their brushes from time to time. I had an art teacher who had a fungal infection in her gastrointestinal track, it was a severe condition, she licked the brushes to have sharper tips and make details easier. I have seen a few people doing it, I always tell them about my art teacher.

Good tips. Most of my brushes just get flicked then hung from a Rube Goldberg contraption i made from 2 large binder clips. Another tip is to be sure not to store synthetic brushes with the bristles bent, even if dry. Accidentally ruined my favorite that way.

yes! if a synthetic is Ben and won’t reshape when wet, it might be worth briefly dipping in boiling water then reshaping. You have nothing to lose and it sometimes works.

Hi Liz, just a few questions. How can one tell when buying watercolour brushes if they are any good? I've got a mixture of SAA, Matthew Palmer's, and Newton, does it make any difference whether the bristles are natural i.e sable or synthetic? The paint on the handle of some of brushes is pealing off but I've always dried them with the handle downwards in a brush holder, is there a holder that I can buy that will allow me to dry the brushes with the bristles downwards? thankyou

The fibre does make a difference to the snap and capacity of the brush. synthetics have come on in leaps and bounds recently, so you may with to stick with them for ethical reasons. Water gets under the paint so it flakes off. Almost inevitable. You can get point down holders or drill holes in a shelf to fit, or use clips/pegs… It’s a big subject to go into detail here

An artist I watch, scrubs her brush on the bottom of the pot in order to clean it, does that damage the brush?. Others only swish the brush in the water without touching the bottom of the pot. When I only swish the brush, it still holds colour. What do you do?

@@LizChadertonArt actually I forgot about the bonus habit . I do compare myself to others who have been painting 20-30 years and I have been painting almost 4. Also I get all worked up thinking about starting a painting without a tutorial. That’s. a bad habit.

@@suel4269 sorry about the last one. Maybe concentrate on tutorials that really build skills, rather than coming out with an end painting? Painting for the bin is a good phrase. The danger of tutorials is that you don’t know where to start when you are doing your own projects.
