    A short anecdote: When the Forester came out with it's trick new 4WD system, Subaru invited a bunch of competitors out for a trial against the Forester. They all did poorly against the Forester except the Grand Vitara. Suzuki and their demo Vitara were not invited back for subsequent events.

    Have owned a 2013 forester which we bought second hand. It’s a great car. Nicer to drive IMO than my parents cx5. We’ve towed big trailers across the state with no issue. The visibility is great with those big windows and its very composed for an SUV. 175000kms and no major issues for us.

    I own a 11/15 build Tucson Highlander 2.0L diesel AWD. I bought it second hand in 2020 with 120,000 k’s with full service record for $28,000. It has just hit 170,000 k’s and I absolutely love it. Admittedly, it’s had a few electrical gremlins that can be combatted quite easily and cheaply. But I’m not planning on getting rid of it until it takes its last tank. 110% recommend it for people looking for a touch of luxury and can afford upwards of $20,000. with heated and cooled front seats, full pano sunroof, electric centre locking diff, and heaps of flexibility in regards to modifications to make them more capable in the soft roading activities to rival a modified Forester for better off-road capabilities.

    I have a very clean top spec 2013 Suzuki GV I picked up in 2018 with 53K km on it and really like it. It feels very solid and well put together with no squeaks or rattles or perceptible body flex and all the controls feel nice quality. It is made in Japan. The AWD system is excellent with low range, center locking diff and good traction control. It has near 50/50 weight balance and is a true AWD not front bias like most SUV. I like the dual physical key and keyless entry and start. I think its the perfect size unless you have a large family. It is surprising how much stuff you can pack in it. Mine came with the Garmin SatNav head unit and it has a socket for a rear view camera so it was easy to add one. Just watch out for the early 2.4 petrol models because they had a bad run of castings according to Suzuki and both the blocks and heads are prone to cracking. This was corrected with a revised block which is visibly different but check which VINS are affected before buying. According to my research, the 2.4 petrol 4 spd transmission is a AISIN (Toyota) unit which should be pretty bullet proof and the GM sourced 3.2 V6 is mated to a 5spd AISIN (Toyota) transmission which is the same unit used in the Toyota Highlander of that era. The engine is mounted inline not transverse so it's easy to work on too. Things I don't like... It likes to up shift into a high gear which drops the revs low for better fuel economy but in town this means it has to drop 2 gears to get a move on so I keep in 3rd gear mode until above 60kmh and then put it in drive. The extra gear of the 3.2 V6 would be nice. The throttle is very touchy which makes pulling away or driving offroad smoothly more challenging than it needs to be. The rear tailgate auto locks on close (or not) depending on its mood and I got locked out once because my key was in my backpack which I had just put in the back and closed the tailgate. The plastic door handles feel like they would break off if you gave a good tug free up a frozen door. Low beams have a sharp cut-off line and everything above that is pitch black so it makes seeing pedestrians at night more difficult.

It wouldn't make the service so we ended up getting rid of it and getting an Xt which has been awesome. the 2005 model was terrible on milage...300kms if you're lucky on one tank. No other major problems other than the xt needed a new LED headlight which costs approx 2500 new. Aftermarket is non existent for the xt and it was near impossible to find a secondhand one with adaptive lights, and when u did find one at the wreckers, it costs 1500 and it was usually interstate.

    Hyundai/Kia Diesels are the go to for the Tucson/Sportage models so I'm not sure why you're recommending them? Even in the rare occurence, they're less problematic than the mentioned RAV4 Diesel, Forester Diesel, and Grand Vitara 1.9L Diesel, and 2.4L Petrol's (where their blocks can crack) which surprisingly didn't get a mention.

    Awesome video as always. I would go for a Toyota RAV 4 or Honda CRV any day. For $20,000 reliability is everything at this point. bugger worrying about it being fun to drive etc. Also stay away from anything with any aftermarket bits. As a mechanic in Melbourne anything that has aftermarket bits fitted just has more stuff to go wrong. I cannot tell you how many times I have had to remove aftermarket bits off cars because they were fitted incorrectly making the car run worse than when it was stock. As for aftermarket radios they tend to drain the battery like there is no tomorrow. At this price point it is meant to be a reliable & safe A to B machine. I couldn’t care about a fancy stereo. Can you answer one question why do you talk about aftermarket stuff so much? It just tends to create major headaches for me as mechanic down in Melbourne when I have to fix other peoples stuff ups.

    you still missed the BIG issue with the 2.4 petrol Grand Vitara engine up to 2010...they have massive block casting flaws and they terminate themselves by cracking their blocks when overheated. Then when you decide to replace the engine expect to shell out $5k for a wrecker low km engine just to get the engine itself. Suzuki revised the engine block design after 2010 (apparently). Yes, this is a known issue, but is not known commonly....been there with my son's car. Other than the engine they are solid cars.

  • @stevenliew9723

    @stevenliew9723

    I am a real life user with the described issue of the Grand Vitara. From my research, all GV with the 2.4L engine circa 2009 have the casting issue. The question is when will it start cracking. Again my research indicates 100,000 km onwards. There is even a flow chart on course of action for dealers when customers turn up with the problem. So it is a known problem to the manufacturer but there was no recall - it would have been a very expensive exercise, I’d imagine. Mine was almost 9 yo when it happened causing the engine oil to leak and mix with the coolant resulting in a sludge like consistency. The engine will overheat rendering the vehicle unoperable. It will cost almost $10k to put in a new top block if you can find one from Japan. Putting in a used engine from the scrap yard doesn’t solve the problem as it will soon fail unless the top block was previously replaced. To be fair to the manufacturer, they provided a new block even though the vehicle was 9 yo ~way after the warranty period. Still with labour, consumables and a radiator, it costs me $5k. Even after replacing the top block the vehicle still experienced overheating.

    Thanks Adam - I presume the dismal ANCAP safety ratings for the pre-2005 models you reported on in ‘cars that will kill you’ a few mths before was addressed in the post 2005 Vitara models? - I owned many pre-2013 Subarus including a GC8 WRX but with the Forester’s cracking windscreen (too thin), wheel studs known to break off when changing wheels and the flawed CVT it’s no longer a good brand - the bearing offset piston rod design for the ‘08-‘12 engines has caused many engine failures - from ‘08 Subaru removed the analogue coolant temp gauge which has no doubt led to many overheating engines but they’re apparently reintroducing it for future models.

I have owned mine for approximately 3.5 years (having completed 90,000km) and in that time have had a host of items replaced (including the engine), granted mine is a diesel. It is also expensive to fix issues when they do come up. But if take all that out of the equation, it is a beautiful car to drive, esp long distances, has good torque off the line and is very efficient both around town and on the highway.

    Hot tip, rarely do cars sell at the advertised price on any classifieds site especially carsales. Plus, the cars advertised on classifieds sites generally ask a premium as sellers know they’ll be haggled to a lower selling figure. To find the bargains out there, look into regional wholesalers, auctions and private sales. A friend just picked up a Focus RS for $10k under the advertised price thanks to it being located regionally and few capital city buyers were willing to drive out to it. All of the cars I mentioned we’ve seen swap hands for $20k and under. - AK
