I’m sorry I don’t really agree but I think the female voices add a really nice sound to it and make it sound like a witchy sound that’s how I kind of was back in the day because people always thought that some people that knew how to do medicines or something like that were witches so actually it’s not 100% true but I think it adds a witchy sound to it.

@@norajuliet8373 I think it’s specific. Just women singing the same notes and lyrics with the men doesn’t work really. It has to be more like the women singing high soprano and playing more of a background role. Men don’t get the main part lots, especially not bases. I think it works much better than the men and bases play the large role here. Especially since they are songs literally made for them and their work.

Its interesting seeing the difference between Male and female shanties, I think the difference comes in because (since women weren't allowed on ships) the music isn't designed for our voices, so the main association with women and the sea is with sirens and mermaids - which I think makes sense with how some of the women in these tiktoks sang and behaved!

@Grant Perkins oh, very sorry for trying to give a bit of a historical perspective about why girls voices might not "fit the vibe" (which I already made clear when I said that the music isn't written for female voices) but sure, go ahead and try to make me look dumb by litterally stating what I just said but without any of the positivity. @@gsaucegaming6635 no one said its a value of manliness. cos my male friends know i can sing and they want that ability to song themselves. i dont sing it to them because singing isnt manly. rapping is manly. or as roomie says bass singing is manly. not many guys listen to songs that is all preety and high pitched. most of my mates listen to rap.

If u think the female voices are glittery, try imagining them as mermaids singing alongside sailors. Sounds heavenly and gives me chills imagining it.

The thing about sea shanties is that they were common folk singing almost like telling tales where the working men would sing together have a laugh and keep themselves moralised. It’s less about how hard or good they are and more about singing with others
