Leave Her Johnny | The Longest Johns | Mass Choir Community Video Project

Музыка

We originally hoped for 100 submissions for this project... When almost 500 turned up, we had to rethink our plans! It's so amazing to watch this video and see the faces of people still keeping Folk Music and Sea Shanties alive all around the globe! A huge thank you to everyone who took part, and remember to keep singing! Hopefully this video gives you a bit of optimism for the future at the end of such a dreary year.
Back in 2019, we had the idea to sing a song with as many of our fans as we could. When 2020 hit, it seemed like the perfect time to do it! Since we got way more submissions that we expected, we ended up having to delay the video's release until NOW!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lyrics
Oh, the times were hard and the wages are low,
(Leave her, Johnny, leave her!)
I guess it's time for us to go,
(And it's time for us to leave her!)
Beware these packet ships, I say!
(Leave her, Johnny, leave her!)
They'll steal your stores and your clothes away
(And it's time for us to leave her!)
{Chorus}
Leave her, Johnny, leave her
Oh leave her, Johnny, leave her
For the voyage is done, and the winds don't blow
and it's time for us to leave her
There's Liverpool Pat in his tarpaulin hat
(Leave her, Johnny, leave her!)
And Yankee John the pocket rat
(And it's time for us to leave her!)
She would not wear and she would not stay
(Leave her, Johnny, leave her!)
She shipped great seas both night and day
(And it's time for us to leave her!)
{Chorus}
It's rotten beef and weevil-y bread,
(Leave her, Johnny, leave her!)
It was pump or drown the old man said,
(And it's time for us to leave her!)
The sails all furled, our work is done,
(Leave her, Johnny, leave her!)
and now ashore we'll take our run
(And it's time for us to leave her!)
{Chorus til Finish}

    I went on a cruise a long time ago as a kid during the middle of the school year, so there were only about 7 teens in total on a cruise full of people. We all became really fast friends despite our different backgrounds. We got up to all sorts of trouble in the 7 days the cruise went for, so much that the staff would just smile and shake their heads and let us do whatever it was we were scheming. There was one kid who took a ukelele with him everywhere and oftentimes we'd all sing sea shanties together since some of the kids were really into assassins creed. This was one of the main songs we sung and I always remember how hard it hit us singing it on the last day of the cruise when we knew we'd probably never see each other again. To this day I dont think ill ever have such a great group of friends and its bittersweet remembering the time spent on the boat. But at the end of the day it was time for us to leave her and go our separate ways. Very awesome project. I loved seeing how diverse the singers were from all ages and different walks of life. It reminded me a lot of my old friends and brought back fond memories, thank you ♥

    As a church choir boy for years, I can attest--the power of a chorus is that it doesn't matter how YOU might feel about your singing ability. People aren't going to hear you. They're going to hear ALL of you. The choir holds each other up. And when you get that harmony, that just-so timed power of hundreds of voices singing in unison, there is nothing else humanity has ever invented that sounds as powerful.

The reason the group of npc’s died is bc they were attacked at sea by an enemy type we made up called Hobgoblins. They are really dangerous in large numbers. One of my players stood up after the song and asked the ale house who would go with them to Twilight Island where the hobgoblins make base and wipe them out. So I basically had to make a dungeon on the fly, but thankfully I still had some unused ship combat maps and some puzzle rooms for once they were on land

    As a sailor myself and someone who holds the sea in high regard, I have heard many a rendition of this song by professionals. Yet nothing came close to the sound of this by a ships crew. I first saw this video in my feed when they made it and was worried it would be mistreated by people looking for 5 minutes of fame. I can safely say, after listening to it now, well over 100 times in the last two years, not only was the shanty treated with the grace and respect it deserves. But I have never felt so close to the sea when at my home upon land as I do listening to this beautiful rendition of "Leave Her Johnny." And the emotions here feel so much like the parting of a crew. Even after so long. Well done to everyone involved, and thank you specifically to the "Longest Johns" one lead shanty man is all this shanty needs. Thank you all for such a fantastic and beautiful tribute to this song and sailors all over.

    @@Nessixify there are different sign languages, but none of them translate directly word-for-word into spoken language very well--the grammar and structure is very different. So, especially for music and poetry, people aren't looking up each individual word and replacing it with a synonymous sign, but rather finding an interpretation they feel captures the spirit and meaning of the original, also taking into account rhythm and musicality. So naturally, you get a lot of different versions!

    I was part of a security detail in 2013 for a ship off the Ivory Coast. Nothing was more depressing than getting stuck on a ship thousands of miles away from home with guns and ammo. But after getting comfortable with the crew. Best time of my life. Getting told your purpose is to sit on a ship with a rifle hoping for pirates to try to board sucks. Your CO in your ear, telling you “if we stop anything on this job we all walk away with money “ isn’t fun. I wasn’t military, I was an employee of a contracting/bounty hunting firm. But once you meet these life long sea men, it changes everything. The fun these guys have on their off time was unrivaled.

She took every bit of the 8 hour pounding and didn't even spring a leak. I sold her a year later and it was not until after she had gone that it hit me. I genuine grief - that little boat had kept me alive when the weather turned bad. What's the point of sign language in music?

    @@jameskovar for people who are simply mute there is no purpose, but sign language is mainly used by the deaf community and as someone who can hear we tend to forget that they can't actually hear the songs we know and love. The use of sign language in song is giving them a chance to "hear" it themselves. And while in this case it's usefulness is slightly redundant because of the way they edited the video, by still including sign it shows that we are including others as well. Considering that this is a community collaboration it makes sense that they have included Sign language because the people who rely on it are also part of the community (Sea shanties are also about community even if said community is just the sailors on one ship...)

    I'd love to see a reedit with at least one of those awesome folks on screen throughout. As it was, it was a heart-warming sight.

    At the OVFF convention, they have a wonderful signer (Judi) for all the concerts. There is video of her signing while Michael Loncor sings "If I could be a flying monkey" that I swear is one of the best things on KZread.

    Yes, only the mermaid following the ship could have made those crystal clear notes. It was a fine ending to the song.

    Imagine if Johnny depp acted in a new part in the pirates of the caribbean, where in one of the scenes he has to leave the black pearl to sink , and while he's looking at it, the crew is singing this as they're leaving far by boats.

    Never fails to make me cry. Seeing everyone, their stories on their faces, surrounded by their home.. I don't want our planet to die. I don't want humanity to die. There's horrible people, real monsters, disaster, and trauma - I've seen my own share of all that. But i still love humans, despite it all. This video is one of my reasons to keep living and fighting. I just hope I have a planet to keep doing that in.
