I was the captain of a sailing ship for five years, the Barque Lioness. When she went to the yard some years ago i knew she'd be the last square-rigger i'd command. Im 78 years old. I hummed this tune when i walked away from her for the last time. Sad then. Sad now.

I think this is one of the best tributes for Stan Roger’s, navy’s actively carrying on his legacy not only in his music, but also in his memory but in memoriam of all those sailors and ships who came before. I truly believe Stan would be filled with joy knowing how this song has impacted people all around the world.

@@YourGodStalin it is, but Stan Rogers is who made it mainstream and in my opinion, perfected it with his rendition of the song. So while it isn't technically his song, I still think that this does pay homage to him, as well as the others who came before

I almost went Navy like my late grandfather when I served. Wish I had and would I had been a vocal musician with the opportunity to sing with such talented patriots! Sound is amazing! The timbre and melancholy feel really get one in the feels.

This is a wonderful evocative song and the singing is excellent...that said one of the images of warships is that of a WWII Nazi Kriegsmarine battle cruiser (Gneisenau/Scharnhorst) which I believe was not your intention as they are similar in some appearance to USN warships of that era. While the mystic of the sea appeals across nationalities I don't think you wanted to associate your wonderfful rendition of this shanty with the despicable history of the Nazi regime - especially as representatives of the USN. For your due consideration. Paul Seguna Lieutenant Commander RCN (Ret'd)

The irony of this video is that this particular song describes how fed up the crew are with the conditions on board and life at sea and is traditionally most often sung by the deck crew of merchant ships or pirate vessels near the end of a voyage to give cheek to the higher-ups, with verses often improvised to include traits of the ranked crew members. It would never be sung on a naval ship due to the expectation that the crew would maintain respect for the chain of command at all times.
