BEST Nigerian Meat Pie | Delightful Meat Pie Recipe...Better Than Mr Biggs/Sweet Sensation
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
The Nigerian meat pie is one of the most popular and delicious snacks in Nigeria.
It's a buttery shortcrust pastry filled with well seasoned beef/chicken and vegetables (carrots and potatoes). The filling is flavourful and moist whilst the pastry is buttery, flaky, tender and golden brown good enough to eat on its own.
A perfectly well done Nigerian meat pie should melt in your mouth. I would compare the Nigerian meat pie to that of the Jamaica beef patties but definitely more yummyyy. They can be eaten as breakfast, lunch, dinner or as a snack.
TIPS; Make sure all your ingredients are cold before you begin. This will keep the pastry light and crumbly.
Try not to overwork your pastry, 1MIN max, otherwise it will become tough.
As soon as you are done forming your dough, make sure you chill it in the refrigerator for at least 1HR before rolling out and shaping your pies.
INGREDIENTS:
4 cups of all purpose flour (500g)
1 tbsp sugar
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp nutmeg
10 tbsp/140g margarine (very cold)
10 tbsp/140g butter (very cold)
2 cold eggs + 1 for glazing
4-5 tbsp evaporated milk or any milk of your choice (very cold)
FOR THE FILLING;
500g minced meat
2-3 tbsp vegetable oil
3 cloves of garlic (minced/chopped)
1 cup diced onions or 1 onion bulb
1-2 scotch bonnet (if you can handle the HEAT or do what i do 1/2 tsp ground pepper)
1 tsp curry powder
1/2 tsp thyme
2 seasoning cube ( i used knorr cubes)
1 1/2 cups diced potatoes
1 cup diced carrots
2 tbsp flour + 3 tbsp water to make slurry for thickening the sauce
salt (to taste)
FEEL FREE TO ADJUST THE SEASONING TO YOUR OWN TASTE.
ENJOY!

Hi, sorry for the late reply. For the minced beef, you can get that from any supermarket that sells food stuff, I believe otherwise, do what I do sometimes, I use what ever beef/chicken I have at home and just chop it up with either knife or food processor, it's the same. Also, thank you so very much for your reply and I hope that you give it a try.

Hi ma'am. I love ur video. But i have a question. Is baking powder similar to baking soda..?? Pls reply me ma'am
@foodtubekitchen6638
3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching. To answer your question, no, they are not the same. They are both leavening agents, but baking powder has some extra ingredients.
This is the first time I have seen the crust made with egg and I'm intrigued, what is the benefit of incorporating the egg in the dough as opposed to just using water or milk?
@foodtubekitchen6638
2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jennifer Udemba, firstly, I apologise for the late reply. The egg simply add more richness to the pastry. I hope you give that a try and I'm sure u'll be able to tell the difference.
Did you put the dough in the fridge after kneading it while making the filing, or it was on the counter?

Yes, I buttered the pan and placed the parchment paper on top. Try that and it should work. Sorry for the late reply, thank you for checking out the video.
Pls be giving us the measurements in cups too. Thanks
Thanks the video was very nice and presentable but is the final egg brushing important
@foodtubekitchen6638
3 жыл бұрын
You don't have to use egg wash, but leaving a pastry without egg wash will make it look pale and doughy. It simply improves the appearance of the pie, giving it a golden brown sheen. You can also use milk instead of egg if you wish. Thank you for checking out the video and commenting.
Thanks Good

Hi, I apologise for the late reply, I haven't tried using yeast as a substitute for baking powder eventhough they are both leavening agents using yeast might change the taste also texture of the pastry.

@foodtubekitchen6638

No, the potato and carrots should stay moist and tender inside the pie. When you place the pie in the oven you are only baking the pastry until golden, this will not affect the filling of the pie.

To be completely honest I have never made that many pies at one time, it's difficult for me to advise to correctly on this. I guess you could try multiplying the ingredients by 10, but I couldn't say for sure if that will work.

Madam I found your style of making your meat-pie awesome. The question for you is how do you store you meat -pie to keep fresh for the next day?. Please response if you can. Tony.
@foodtubekitchen6638
3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Tony, so glad the video was useful. Thanks for the positive feedback. To answer your question... I would store the meat pie in an air tight container or a zip lock bag, then place in the refrigerator. This meat pie will last for 3-5 days. When you want to reheat the pie, pre heat the oven to 350F/175C, then place pie on a baking sheet or foil. Cover the pie with foil to stop it from burning then cook for 15 minutes. After this remove the foil and cook for a further 5 minutes. Your pie will then be ready to eat. Thanks again!

I store my meat pies in the freezer. I like to make a lot at once cos it's stressful making it every now and then. If you live in a clim that has a constant power supply, try storing it in the freezer. whenever you want to eat it, just bring out what you need, leave it out for a few minutes or defrost for 5minutes in the microwave then warn it for 90secs.
