    Yep, 3200MHZ is the cut-off point where I wouldn't spend money just to replace it. It does fine! THe FPS boost only makes itself known when you're heavily CPU limited anyway, most of the time it's imperceptible.

    Thanks for this vid, it's actually great info. Imo seeing the results it's not worth to go for faster rams, 3200 CL16/3600 CL16 at most. Personally I think I'll go for 3200 CL16 and just buy more, maybe 64 GB this time, because I could always use some more RAM for work :D

    Also using a 12700k(f). I bought some Corsair VENGEANCE RGB RT's 2x16gb at 4600mhz CL18s. I wasn't able to get them to post at the full 4600mhz, but at 4400mhz (Seems to be the 12700's limit), these are absolute monsters with the same tight timing. I got these because without XMP at their SPD speeds they run at 3200mhz stock, which is what these CPU's ask for ddr4's. They also look extremely good and have quite a bit of wiggle room for overclocking. Great so far. Eliminated any micro-stuttering I had in memory intensive games like Spiderman and Red Dead 2. Using a Asus Tuf Gaming z690-plus wifi D4 motherboard to achieve this. Nothing on the board goes over 60 degrees celsius with an AIO cooler on the CPU.

    This is exactly what I was looking for! I'm putting together a i5-12400 build. I wanted to fill in 4x8GB sticks of RGB, 32GB of RAM. But wasn't sure on if 3200 vs 3600 will make that much of a difference in games for the price (currently $160 vs $190). I can find $30 to make that much of a difference in FPS

  • @BuildPicker

    @BuildPicker

    2 жыл бұрын

    Ok! but be careful!! I'm now seeing some people report that because you can't alter system agent voltage in non K CPUs, 3600Mhz isn't fully stable. It's not something I've encountered and I'm doing more tests, but the problem will get worse with 4 sticks not two. If you really care about FPS, I'd opt for an i5-12500 or 12600 for those $30, and get 3200Mhz CL16 RAM in 4x8 to be sure of stability. Guaranteed performance boost, much more chance of stable RAM!

    Great videos with a lot of tech details. I was pretty sure that i5-12400 does not support 3600 ram because of power limitation, but I can assume it could work on some motherboards, if you say so. Also it seems that the limit of game performance for most of the users will be settled not by memory speed, but by GPU. For example I feel like 3060ti is maximum, that I am willing to pay for right now. 3080 or smth from 4x series would be great option, but the prices are already a bit astronomical.

    If you want 'guaranteed' stability, the 3600MHz kit. It will be fit, click (XMP) and forget. The 4000Mhz kit may involve some manual tweaking/tuning, and you may find your memory controller isn't stable at 2000MHz so you'd have to drop to Gear 2 mode. It's also not much (or at all) faster, given it's 4000Mhz CL18 vs 3600Mhz Cl16 = nearly the same total latency. Down to you if you want to do manual RAM tuning/stabililty testing or not.

  • @BuildPicker

    @BuildPicker

    2 жыл бұрын

    LIterally none. You're fullly GPU limited and it's impossible to discernt any perfomrance impact at 4K. I test this stuff at 1080p because it's the only way to see any difference. In some games you might see a slight improvemnt in 0.1% and 1% lows with well optimised RAM, but that's honestly more of an indication that the game coding isn't great. Some benchmarks break down the Game engine metrics and you can still see the impacts there, but it's irrelevant since the GPU is (or should be ) The limit, always, at 4K. It's a weird paradox that although 4K gaming systems tend to be high end from processor all the way through, you can actually get away with way less processor on them! Very high FPS 1080p gaming is what needs a very fast CPU and optimised RAM.

  • @BuildPicker

    3200MHz is the Specification, but speeds above that are an overclock, and can be applied. Stability is at your own risk and should be thoroughly tested when operating outside of the normal guaranteed range. That said, It's no big deal for almost any CPU and motherboard combination to run RAM well past 3200MT/s, with the Alder lake memory controller finding it's limits somewhere around 1800+ MHZ for gear one (1:1) Mode. Gear 2 y oucan run way faster. None of the Alder Lake CPus or motherboards we have available to test have probelms with 4400MHz Samsung B-Die, in gear 2. Ins short 3200MHz is the minimum *guaranteed* supported speed.

    THe 3200Mhz Cl16 will be fine. If you an get a sub $90 deal on the 4000Mhz Ballistix Max, get that, it's good value. Avoid the 4400Mhz Cl19, you'll have to manually tune it down to 4000Mhz or lower to get gear 1, and then tighten timings too - which is a lot of work. In reality, if any of these are more than $40 above the 3200MHz Cl16 kit, you should just be buying a 12600 instead: That will get you more performance across the board from higher clock speeds.

    3200MT/s is the max officially rated speeds, but 3600MT/s is a mild overclock and well within the capablity of the CPUs memory controller. THe B660 allows XMP above 3200MT/s (MT/s and MHz are referring to the same thing and really I/we should use MT/s!) There inn't a night and day perfdormance difference so if you're worried about it, or 3600MT/s is way more expensive, you'll be fine with 3200MT/s. However, 3600MT.s should give no issues and work directly via XMP! Remember also: 3600 CL18 = 3200MHz Cl16 rouoghtly, so don't buy on 'speed' alone. Timings are important too.

    The purpose of this video is really to demonstrate the range of performance impact of different speeds of RAM. It's not possible, nor really sensible, to test *every* available kit - because if they have the same specifications, they'll perform the same. To get the best RAM, you need to first of all get the Speed in MHz that is fastest, but stable on your chosen CPU and motherboard and at your chosen capacity. Then, you need to find a kit with low timings, the lower the better, across the board of timings and sub timings. It's not as simple as there being 'one' best kit', and actually most kits will perform within margin or error of one another, given the smaer or similar XMP specification. The TL;DR is buy 3600Mhz CL16 Crucial Ballistix or G.SKill though.

    Given some people are experiencing difficulty with 3600MHz RAM, I'd suggest 3200MhZ CL16, in a 2x8GB Kit for most users. That's if you don't want to get involved in manually tuning your RAM and want 100% compatibility.

    Basically no difference - Dual ran 16GB sticks will perform much like four 8GB sticks. Buy on price, lower timings, or if you prefer the looks of 4 sticks.

    @PremiumBuilds Please remove 12400 from the title. Alder lake non-k cpu VCCSA volage is locked at ~0.9v, you are lucky to get away with 3400mhz, there have been reports that even older 3000mhz cl15 XMP kits don't work coz of the locked VCCSA.

    I've done plenty of work on this now across 3 non K cpu's, all run a 3600Mhz CL16 G.skill Kit flawlessly at XMP, gear 1. That's i3, i5 and i7. It appears to be the crucial ballistix kit that have issues, but they run at gear 2 fine - a minor performance penalty.

    Nope, but corsair have a wide range of ram and tend to use a variety of chips/suppliers in the lower cost lines, making it hard to match ram or know exactly what you're getting. Buy on specification, not brand.
