Hello John, that really is a well done long and interesting review of the X358. I have had mine since 2014, it's a 2007 4.2 V8 Sovereign in Lunar Grey with Ivory trim and is by far the best car I've ever owned in all my 58 years of driving. Each day I drive it gives me the same excitement as the first day I bought it. It had done 85,000 miles and now shows 131,000 You can drive from one end of the country to the other without feeling tired at the end of it. You get the feeling that the car drives itself. The number of people that have come up to me when parked in public places to say how beautiful the car looks is just staggering. Two people have asked if i would sell it and my stock answer is always that I never will and that it will see me out!! I keep it well serviced and looked after by the Jaguar specialists here in Coventry. Paul Stanton

Great video. I'm 3 days into ownership of a 2008 X358 in black with tan interior and she really looks the part. A mere 54k on the clock. Had a Series 3 decades ago and then a later model whose number I have forgotten but this feels more nimble and eager, even on the 'small' 3 litre V6. I guess that aluminium body makes a big difference. After many years of BMW efficiency it's great to get back into a car that feels as if it hugs you.

My current one, an XJR has 271.000 km’s on it and still smooth as silk. Really enjoyed the review, I am moving back to Blighty in the coming months and would love, but am weary, of getting a Jag when I get back. Your video has helped ease some of those fears and now I think it might just have to happen. Back in '94 i owned a 1979 Daimler 4.2 Sovereign and have still to ride in a vehicle more comfortable. Also had an S-Type 3.0 (2000) for a while here in the US which was nice, but I'm more an XJ kind of guy. I think I might be on the lookout for a 358 once back on the sensible side of the pond. :) Agreed on the slightly prettier 308, but aluminium body and the fuel economy on the 2.7 Diesel is very appealing. I don't plan on doing many miles, so I want to do it in comfort and style.

Those series3 XJ's and Daimlers were Sooooo far ahead of everything else in terms of ride and refinement at the time, that they will still out class the ride on many modern so called luxury saloons. Would be scary thirsty to own now though. Good luck in your X358 search👍

Hi John, Great review that seems fair and relatively unbiased that has helped me decide to try and find a late version X358, but I am not as brave as you so I will opt for one with low mileage and FSH. Yes it will cost me a fair bit, but at my age I do not want to tinker with the car myself, but fortunately I do have a good local garage that have always looked after my X type SE. I was at one time considering buying an S type, but after watching your video I now believe that an XJ6 will be a better fit.

I hope you find yourself a good one in your budget Paul. I dont think you could be disappointed. Try to get a standard wheelbase one for ease of parking and better potential sell on price. But if neither is an issue then LWB abs ironically fetch less money and have led even more cosseted lives. (Unless they are white wedding cars of course)

The only thing wrong with mine now ( after spending the original purchase cost on various repairs within a year of ownership including the gearbox refurb 😅) is a slight vibration on idle can hear it within the cabin. Garage thought an injector tested them and no issues. It's back in next month for MoT so will have them dive deeper into it. It's only so slight it's difficult to put a finger on it. I agree with everything you said about your Jag. I owned a V6 Petrol XJ 350, and loved it. It also had similar mileage to yours. And yes, it was very English - all the wood and soul etc. but mine had the wooden steering wheel as well, obviously slightly more horsepower, same colour scheme. I now have an XJ Portfolio V6, with an incredible acceleration and torque only 46,500 on the clock. If possible, believe or not it actually is more comfortable, but gone are the adjustable pedals and wood steering wheel. In comes massage seats, heated and cooled, never take the fob out of my waistcoat pocket. I didn’t reply think I could like the design, but it is indeed beautiful in design and yes this one really does look aggressive. I don’t do a lot of miles (I’m 69). but after two months, I am still learning about new things it has or does. I would like to have both.

Greetings from Barcelona I own a XJS convertible and a XJ 358 4.2 V8. The car has more or less the same mileage than yours, has always been extremely reliable, and I would not replace it for any other car. Very, VERY satisfied. Part of its reliability comes from the fact that I maintain it very well, and I would give an advice to anyone who thinks of buying one: change all the fluids and filters, of course, INCLUDING automatic gearbox oil. That tends to be forgotten, and when it breaks (not if, but when), the cost of the repair is very expensive.

Thanks John, very balanced review and educated me on the 350 series; regretfully I had to leave my X308 behind to head overseas in 2000 and though biased as you pointed out I loved the stance of that vehicle and its V8. So after all that good work why let BLUE go now, if you still have the need for lengthy commutes what better way to complete them in considerable comfort with economy!? By way of update the XK8 has received the Adamesh Stage 1 & 2 treatment, probably the best mod I've done though she's more or less 1997 original in the launch colour of Sapphire Blue. With the cam chain tensioners, gearbox fluid change I'm now waiting to see you tackle the rear diff fluid, access looks horrible. It was a small adapter box that plugged into the phono connections in the rear armrest, and then let me hook up my iphone to it via a lightening connector. That way i just opened netflix on my phone and could watch it on the rear screens

What's the car like in terms of steering feel and feedback? Can you tell much about what's going on between the tyres and the road? At some point I'll be looking to swap a vintage Merc for something more to my own taste, and the obvious option is a nice BMW E39. The X350/358 seems one of the possible competitors but having too much isolation is a worry.

Much more engaging drive than an equivalent Merc. Less direct feel than a sporty BMW, but the combo of comfort handling and performance is addictive. I would recommend borrowing one for a test drive.

I can't believe you haven't had the ECU remapped, it costs little and is a no brainer. Had mine done and it has an additional 53bhp and 100Nm torque which transforms the performance, I've even seen a small improvement in economy.

Hello again John, still haven't taken the plunge and acquired a X350/358, but I am getting closer, I think. My wife in fact was dead against me buying an old barge, insisting that we buy a two/three year old XF/XJ or possibly and E class Mercedes. However when I explained the new road tax rules to her and the fact that we would haven to cough up £490 road for the first six years of a much newer cars life she changed her mind a bit, not to mention spending possibly 30K on the car itself. It has now been decided that I am wholly in charge of the car acquiring department. Now for some advice and could your share your opinions on reliability in consideration of my personal situation. As you know from my last comment, I do not do car maintenance anymore(health problems and old), and I have to confess that there is one thing that worries me about the XJ, that being the air suspension! Other common issues like EGR's/DPF's/Turbo's are all part and parcel of owning a diesel which I have done for years. Actually I personally have never really had any problems with this kind of thing because when I do drive my car I take it for a good run and make sure that everything gets up to optimum running temperature. Anyway back to the air suspension,...do you think that the XJ is a good car to buy if you do not do DIY maintenance? Incidentally my plan is to spend about £10K on the car itself, get a lower mileage/FSH car, and then put about £3K to one side for possible problems. Do you think this is enough money?

Hi Paul I like the car selection logic you are using. As you say you are used to the potential Diesel related issues so other than it being a large electronically complex car (Which all of the other options would be as well) You are right in identifying the Air suspension as being the only genuine difference or potential issue. My own experience has been good. As you no doubt know from the video's, I have had a suspension fault warning light. This is often because the car is unable to self level quickly enough, which in turn means that the onboard compressor is not supplying air fast enough or its leaking out from somewhere. Loose or leaking pipework does not appear common except after replacing the air springs themselves. The piston ring in the compressor being worn is where my fault lay and this appears to be reasonably common as indicated by aftermarket ring manufacturers being 'a thing' . Thats pretty easy to do for any Garage particularly if they are pointed at the problem or shown my video. The air suspension 'springs / bags' themselves are available and certainly not cheap , but they are easy to change. And remember that the spring and damper is effectively combined in one device so that makes the price more reasonable. Their failure does happen but does not seem common. The height detection device on the suspension can fail but is easily changed and not very expensive. The only other potential failure area seems to be the solenoid/manifold block on top of the air tank. But as this is inside the boot and under the spare wheel, its pretty much protected from contact and corrosion. I think Range rovers have a lot more issues due to the much more active nature of their suspension and inclusion of driver ride height controls etc. This bleeds across to the Jag brand to give a degree of fear for that too. It has to be said that some garages will never have seen an air suspended car and will run a mile if presented with an issue on an X350/358 but if you are putting aside some repair money then any issues should easily be resolved by any Jag independent garage

I had the X350 3.6l V8. I’m thinking now of the diesel. But am wondering can I deal with the diesel sound after a V8? but in this video the car sounds very quiet, and I think they have double glazing inside, on the 2006 facelift? is it quiet and smooth? I hate that tractor sound, but maybe that’s old thinking. Yours sounds silent (inside anyway)

  • @ToTheGarage

Hi jjjos. Yes, mine was double glazed. No Deisel clatter can be heard inside at all. Outside you might be able to detect it is diesel rather than petrol in the first 1 to 2 seconds of start-up but a Lion engine in good condition is a very smooth diesel indeed. I would recommend you drive one before committing but i seriously doubt you will find any issue with the noise made by this motor if its in good condition

Just rewatching the vid, and can testify this is a safe car. I drove into extremely narrow width restriction poles at high speed and totalled the car, but was completely unhurt. I knew the cars width perfectly but the poles had a small lip of concrete to secure them, I hit that which in turn caused the car to flip. I could blame the design of the restriction poles but that aside, the proof showed you can drive this into a brick wall and then get out without harm. 6ft of bonnet probably helps

Are you aware of the issues that sometimes affect the 2.7 diesel engine? I've been hearng more and more about oil starvation causing big-end failure. A mate recently bought one super cheap with a dead engine with the intention of replacing the unit, he's a mechanic. However, sourcing an engine was nigh on impossible as they are in such huge demand due to these failures. The engine was also used in Range Rovers so this also means high demand. He ended up having to pay about £3K for a used replacement. This forum tells you more www.jaguarforum.com/threads/oil-starvation-causing-big-end-failure-on-2-7-diesel.98913/

Hi LJ W. Yes im aware of the various failure modes but to be honest every engine sold with any real volume will have a list of failure types (Although Honda failure data is very sparse) The crank shaft failure is an interesting one as that does smack of design/material/fatigue failure. But in all other regards, clean oil and driving in a manner that keeps the DPF clean, massively minimises the risk of trouble. The trouble with sourcing decent replacement engines tells us more about the number of high mile and not necessarily well maintained cars out there that people are trying to keep on the road. (particularly Land Rover products) No one is desperate to keep 18 year old diesel Vectra's on the road for instance.

HI Robert. In Fairness the sound is often a little up and down as depending on the speakers people use, some react well to voice and poorly to music and vice versa and I often get complaints of too loud and too quiet on the same bit of the same video. I continue to try to get the right balance👍 Re costs, I didn't actually say how much I had spent on the repairs. But if you eliminate the pictures and tyre, I didn't even spend half what you suggest. Maybe I should be everyones personal shopper? It helps that I can do a lot of the work myself. and dont mind browsing EBay to find bargains.

Are rear brakes an issue with these cars? I'm looking at a 2006 VDP with 86,000 miles, the CARFAX indicates its had several rear pad and rotor replacements, those are not noted for the front brakes. I suspect a master cylinder issue but there is no notation of that being replaced. I've looked into air spring issues, replacing those is actually not difficult, the job can be done without specialist tools, at least at the front. Headliners are another issue, here in the US the part is around $1,550, sun visors are around $450 EACH. It seems that all headliners will sag given enough time, for some reason Jaguar hasn't gotten them right even though they have known of the problem for decades.
