Maining 12900KF 7900XTX going great. Am rebuilding board swapping the boards for the others 12700KF 3060 media pc build getting it's own Z690, and the B760M is getting put with a 12400F I got on sale earlier this week. So I'm moving the last 2 into new cases or unbuilding to rebuild idk. 12th has been a good value for upgrades. I have a lot of pcs coming from Spectre, moving on to 12th gen. I think I am sitting out 14th.

I'm really glad that you broke down the memory constraint differences from 12th gen/z690 and 13th/13.5th gen/z790. If you are trying to run 4 sticks of fast DDR5 ram, definitely going 13th gen+ and a solid board is where you start. Edit: Gigabyte Aorus Elite AX is my board and it's been amazing.

Someday, someday Jason. I would love to see a video about the best motherboard to quality case configuration. Talking about which cases come with the most fans, come with their own controller hubs, which boards combine with these cases the best. Reason, the hardest part for me and my crew when it comes to PC building is connecting all the fans and cable management. Always the most challenging thing for us. So many crappy cases out there.

Last CPU's before my actual i5-11600K has been the i7-3770K and i've been totally overwhelmed by the hilarious number of available Bios-settings just related to the CPU. It took months and some Bios-Updates to be able to set everything up proper. The automatic values didn't work with the very first Bios versions wich leaded to "exploding" temperatures and even an unstable system (Bluescreens and such). There have been a vast of settings i never heard before so it has been extremely hard to figure out working values to run the CPU ... at least stable. Well, i just wanna say thank you for your amazing channel not only for beginners! Guessing i'll watch more of it soon because new hardware arriving xD

I’m going to be using my 12700k in combination with my 3090 and an Arc A380 for a plex server/gaming rig. Although this board does not have thunderbolt I’ll be using a 50ft fiber optic usb 3.1 extension and a powered Lenovo usb hub along side a fiber optic hdmi for the 4K TV in my living room. Thanks to amazons second prime sale I was able to get the fiber optic cables for a great price. Already tested and I’m experiencing little to no latency

I used the Asus Rog Maximus Z690 Hero on my Grand daughters build and has no issues so far. Price is 50% less than the release. Really good bargain. This week the wife did buy a I9-14900K and flashed the bios on her Gigabyte Z790 Aorus Master and it took. Than swapped the I7-12700 on Grand daughters board for wife's old I9-13900K. No issues with current bios. So I can confirm that most 1700 CPUs are interchangeable with the right board. Yes AMD gets all the love from us gamers but don't overlook the crazy prices with Intel 12 and 13 generations right now. Especially when you can basically get a high end last gen board and CPU from Intel at stupid low prices. Great information Jason on this. Your recommendations were spot on. Keep it up.

I've been eyeing up the Asus TUF Z790-PRO motherboard but it seems almost identical to the Z790-Plus board except for an updated bios for 14th gen (no bios flashback on the Plus so I would need to put a previous gen processor in to update the bios which I don't have). Good board, but if you are looking for very good RAM traces don't rule out the Aorus X boards as that is their main feature. Remember getting the 7200 CL34 stuff to work isn't a given on any board, but the better the traces the less likely they'll fail due to that.

From personal experience, in the future I will probably put more emphasis on one certain motherboard feature that my current one lacks. And that is a "clear CMOS"-button - preferably on the rear I/O-panel. On my MSI Z690 Tomahawk, they didn't even include a jumper to clear the CMOS - pins are there of course, but no jumper. So when I messed up during overclocking and the PC wouldn't boot, I had to take out my GPU because the battery is completely covered by it and there's no way to get to the battery with the GPU installed. My card has a rather large cooler, but I suspect that less ludicrously oversized cards will cause the same problem on this board. Re RAM: I'd be a bit more undecided today between DDR4 and DDR5, I think, than I was when I built this PC back in March/April 2022. Back then, DDR5 kits were very scarce and a lot more expensive than fast DDR4. Plus reports at the time stated that real-world performance difference still was more or less negligible between the two. So I went with a Z690 and 3600 CL18 DDR4. System seemed plenty fast to me and it's even faster now that I had to change to a 2x16 GB 3600 CL16 kit (stability issues with the 4x8 GB config I ran before). For the sake of "future proofing" (whatever that means), DDR5 would be my choice today of course - OTOH, the current 1700-socket Intel platform will be phased out in about a year, so if you *really* want to be future-proof and go Intel, it'd probably be best to wait until 15th gen comes out. Perhaps they'll even manage to produce a new gen of CPUs that are a bit more frugal when it comes to power-consumption. :D

Curious, why do you need both the 4070 and the T-400? The 4070 is strong enough where I don't think there would be any benefit to even running stuff on the T-400. Just remembering what I can, I think the Asrock Z790 Taichi Lite has 2 x16 slots (PCIe gen 5), and is able to run these two slots as x8 | x8 (should verify on their website). Think it's around $300-ish (USD) so you could look at that one. Don't know if there are cheaper options though.

It's "probably" enough for 12400, but I hate boards without VRM heat sinks. I would not put a 13600K on it as it will instantly thermal throttle. Grab a better board instead.

Thank you so much for the education. I'm so far behind with this newer tech. Last computer I built had a Sandy Bridge I 5 in it. When it was new. Lol

I'm going to start my new build for my kid. Want it to last a while. Probably spend about $1000-$1500 (US) in just parts. Going to reuse case, SSD, and hard drive off the old computer.

MSI B760 Gaming plus fully support i5 14600k overclocking with XMP (Extreme Memory Profiles). I am using it...

Just some constructive criticism: I think it would help people who are new to pc building if you included a grid on the screen while talking about compatibility. Similar to how y'all do the blue bubbles like @ 2:19. The would give people an all-in-one summary of the main differences

shoo badoo grid on the screen, why new people as you need that ? It's better that he tells how you bottleneck next gen gear on old CPU, Why XMP profiles on some old i5 on low power, that is the only thing these channels need to understand, basics ! If you buy old crappy CPU's on low power etc, what are you bottlenecking here ! East to tell in any content, that was all noobs need to understand.

What about the Asus ROG strix z790-A Gaming Wifi 2 for the 14700k? Seems the same as the Aorus Pro X minus the Gen 5 M.2 slot but if I'm not using Gen 5 then how would the Asus be?

Hello! I think i'm getting an i5-13500, seems like the best all around budget option for my needs (i do not plan on overclocking), but im pretty stuck on choosing mobo. I would love DDR5 but intel says max 4800 speeds (which is pretty bad according to reviews) supported (many people claim though that they run fine 5600-6000 speeds). If someone can give me a quick advice on what (~300/350$) mobo/ddr5 combo I should pair with this cpu, I would really appreciate it. Thanks! Great video, as always btw

Harry What did you lost, was the OLD PC not good enough, why this ? Why you need fast memory on a bottlenecking system ? Any cheap DDR 4 should do the job on a slow CPU ! You only need the XMP 6000 on faster system !

@@lucasrem well sir you don't really seem that well informed, I suggest you check the benchmarks of that CPU in every task with a ddr4 3600, ddr5 4800 and a ddr5 6000, you might be surprised. And we are talking about a less than 100$ difference to pick DDR5 mobo/ram than a DDR4 mobo/ram. At least in my place. So yeah, DDR4 is gonna be obsolete soon, not useless ofc, just "old tech". That's why I'll go with DDR5 6000. Anyway thanks

If I’m planning on upgrading from z390 motherboard i9-9900k should I wait for z890 or do you think z790 will be fine? I’m curious if the next gen cpu (i7-15700) will need a z890 or will the z790 support them?
