Yes, this converter will run your monitor at 480p, but if you want to have better compatibility (some monitors don't like this format) you may want to look into upscalers instead.

most interesting video. This might be the solution for replacing a standard RS-170 monochrome NTSC 12" crt monitor with a LCD display? If the picture is a video still image it looks OK on the LCD. However if the video has moving action it gets smeared with very little detail. So far I have not found a LCD monitor even with the BNC video connector 30 frames BW composite input that works as well as the original 12" crt monitor. 😎 Thank you. Also, some monitors that might work like the ones used on X-ray systems get very expensive.

I've got mine from AliExpress, but this one on amazon seems to be very similar (and 3x as much for some reason 😟) www.amazon.com/Musou-Component-Converter-Adapter-Coaxial/dp/B01F6URXYY Hopefully you'll find a better deal. It's just a converter and not a scaler so it shouldn't be that expensive for a no name brand. If you expirience signal "dropping", try different TV/monitor. Changeing the frequency (50 vs 60 Hz) or output signal (on wii there's 480i and 480p for NTSC and 576p for PAL) may make it more compatible. Some TV just loose the sync after few seconds (some TV manufacturers follow video standard very strictly so a "sloppy" signal may cause issues)

Thank you for the quick reply and detailed message. I’m in USA and I’ve never used Aliexpress, is there risk involved for such cheap prices??? Sometimes the converter works great and I can play for hours with no issues. Other times it simply will not work (it has a little red light and it just blinks; apparently to let me know there is an issue). I try all the tricks to reconnect it when its blinking red, and sometimes it works, sometimes it does not fix the issue. But the next day when I fire it up again it might not have any issues. Really weird. Any additional advice in regards to that issue?

  • @pandaengineering

As far as I can tell, aliexpress allows you to buy more directly from the supplier (less people in the middle). I use Revoult virtual credit card to make sure I won't get scammed when buying and when I opened a dispute that you didn't got the item, I always got a refund if I pushed them a little bit. If you have some worries about the dubious practices in factories in China, you can try to use "Cultivate" browser extension on Amazon - it should show you the sellers origin (most stuff like that are being made exclusively in China though). I suspect that your device may have a software bug or it overheats. In both cases disconnecting it for 10 minutes when if "hangs" can solve the issue. If it has a software bug, there a power capacitor inside that has to be discharged before it will work again (waiting for few minutes when it's disconnected from power and signal could do the trick) and if there's overheating issue, you'll probably feel the heat even on its case. Solving overheating could be tricky, but you can try to put it somewhere where there is some draft. I solved that with my router by adding a thermal compound and a small heatsink on the main chip 😉

Do the colours look normal on your monitor when using the component to HDMI converter? I use the official Nintendo component cables ob my Wii and they look great, but when I use them on my component to HDMI converter, the colours look a bit washed out. On my Elgato HD60s, it looks fine. The converter I use is made by Portta and wanted to know if your component to HDMI converter displays the colours correctly on your TV.

Try to lookup the Component(red, green, blue for video + red and white for audio) vs Composite (yellow for video and red and white for audio). Unfortunately video signals are not directly compatible between them (in composite the three colors are "merged" into a single signal). If you want to connect via HDMI, you will have to use a different converter, but I recommend getting a Component cable instead if possible because image will be clearer. Most TVs have still a Composite input, so maybe you can connect the device directly ☺️

The mClassic can take a low resolution image (480p minimum) started with and upscale it to 1080p/1440p 60fps cleanly. It smooths out the jagged edges that exists on the original image, adds a balanced amount of sharpening, and gives it a tiny bit of color boost or a vibrant look to the final upscaled image. • @pandaengineering

Using a straight up converter like this one probably won't work. I got some games working when using the via homebrew launcher on Wii that forces the game into 480p, but this isn't a reliable solution as you can expect bugs or you console may not even have this option. You may want to look into scalers for HDMI (they convert the signal AND change the resolution), but make sure to read reviews and research a bit as cheap scalers can introduce a lot of lag (this doesn't matter for just playing video from old media but for games would be a significant issue).

I'm searching for a way to use my PS2 on my monitor which supports only progressive resolutions(minimum 480p) and I just found this scaler on Aliexpress. Do you have an idea if this will display or convert in any way for my monitor the 480i of the PS2(the main menu and some games that didn't got progressive scan/480p)? I got a HDMI dongle but unfortunately it won't display anything that its interlaced, just the progressive resolutions, forcing me to navigate blindly until I start a game with progressive scan.

  • @pandaengineering

No, sorry. This device pushes through the signal as is. Interlaced stays interlaced. I think what you're looking for is called a line doubler. Problem with devices like that is that they may produce lag or have very weird output frequency (30Hz instead of 60Hz since every other frame is "skipped" ) and the good ones may be quite expensive. If you have a modded PS2 you may be able to figure out a patch like here www.racketboy.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=417571 (found one to give you an idea what I have in mind, make sure to run all downloaded files through an antivirus though 😁 on forums like that you never know what's attached) I know these are really hit or miss, but hopefully can help with some of the cases 😀

They should if it can accept both NTSC and PAL (some VC titles are only for specific regions). I also found that there are some homebrew launchers that can override the output to be 480p but it's very hacky and may break some games.

The only idea I have is looking into the manual, there should be a table at the end (for Samsung it's "Standard Signal Mode Table"). The thing about this is that you can't say for sure what kind of horizontal or vertical frequency your specific device will use and it may just fall out of range. I also would assume that no monitor without TV capability has any way to display interlaced signals. Reading a little bit about Wii itself it apparently renders 480p internally to 640x480, but outputs that to 720x480 which is rather non-standard, but for whatever reason worked on my old monitor. Depending on the graphics card you might be able to simulate that kind of resolution and test monitor for yourself beforehand (I had better luck with AMD GPU than Intel built-in because Intel would scale internally my custom resolution and output a native HDMI monitor resolution).
