Best Full Range Drivers - 4" AIYIMA v Markaudio CHR 70. Which is the best for speaker building?
Which Full Range Driver is the best for your speaker build? I have put together a short review of both the Markaudio CHR-70 and AIYIMA 4" Full range drivers. The box sizes may not be ideal but, they are the same so, should give a great representation of the comparable differences. I have, using Dayton Audio DATSv3 put the Small Thiele (T/S) parameters in the video too.

The difference is huge. The Aiyima sounds so much better!!!!
I found the Aiyima to be brighter and clearer in the upper midrange, say in the 1-4khz range. The Mark Audio sounded more balanced but a bit flat. Purists often chase this flat sound, but truthfully not many people really enjoy listening to a flat speaker. In all of the demos except the beethoven piano, I liked the Aiyima sound better (I also prefer a slightly bright speaker). The piano tracks sounded the same to me. Not surprising since Pianos don't really have a lot of high frequency harmonics or details compared to the horns and strings in the other tracks.
In my opinion, the Aiyima is brighter. The Mark was quite dull in the upper frequencies. I'd likely end up pairing the Mark's with a tweeter.
Ayima has the clearer sound
The Aiyima sounds ten times better. More punch in the lows and much more clarity in the highs.
In my opinion aiyima wins.
For me AIYIMA sounded better, it sounded way better and more precise on higher frequencies, without loosing lower frequencies, CHR 70 sounded more like a midrange and muddy on higher frequencies. So as full range speaker AIYIMA is a winner for me.
Strange, i can hear a big difference between the two. The Aiyima seems stronger in the highs while the Markaudio has a stronger midrange. Since I am listening to headphones on youtube it might not represent the actual differences between the two. They only were close on the piano passage. Thanks so much for doing this!
Interesting you could not hear a difference. Aiyima seems to have more upper detail, nice treble. They both sound great to me, but if I had to choose I'd take the Mark. Percussion, wood instrument, overall sound is more to my liking. Laid-back sound maybe 🤔 I am certainly no expert...they both sounded very nice
in my opinion, Aiyima is better every side.
Beautiful job on the boxes!
So i just built a pair of Voigt pipes of old pallet-wood and mdf and slapped a 10euro pair of 4" full range drivers on them and just hooked them up and watched your vid with the sound through them (thats a lot of thems lol) The Aiyimas sounded much better in your video, to my ears at least. Think i´ll be looking for Aiyimas for my next build. Nice vid. Thumbs up :)
Thank you so much! Watching now. Keep it up. :)
Subjectively comparing them in that circumstance the two presentations were totally different. The Chr's being very laid back with the Aiyima's being lively. I found the sparkle of the Aiyima's particularly pleasing and can imagine in your listening room they readily produce holographic imaging whereas the Chr's imaging would be more solid. Bass on both was good, but I felt the Aiyima's were a tad more defined and articulate. again purely down to the design traits of the drivers. I was very impressed with the Aiyima's and your videos have enticed me to buy a pair on that strength, for my upcoming Frugel Horn Mk III build.
Thanks for the helpful videos! Now you have a new subscriber from Russia!)))
3" and 4" fr drivers are excellent to use as the "tweeter" in a 2-way build.
Listening through HD800S headphones high end headphone amp and good DAC. Sound is different and I prefer the Markaudio CHR 70. The Markaudio is more natural sounding with lovely mids the AIYIMA is just a bit hard/brittle and forward in highs.
Great video! I definitely prefer the laid back full sound of the Mark Audio speakers in this video. I have spent more than 30 years mixing audio professionally and prefer a more flat frequency response. I find bright speakers to be very fatiguing. What is that device sitting between the speaker and the Onkyo? Is that a streamer? I'm very curious about this lol
I can even hear a difference on my phone! I have a pair of chr70 mk3's in fenlon designed boxes. They sound amazing on a strong class d amp like the aiyima a07. I will buy the aiyima fr drivers too. You made me curious😅
in the ayiima I could better distinguish all frequencies which is a more defined sound
