I agree, Laura. I believe in living lightly on the earth. I am about to move to North Carolina from NY and we have decided we are going to take bare minimum furniture with us and look to buy different stuff there. After all, most furniture in America is MADE in NC! So I expect to find tons! However, at an online auction - right here in my home town - I found a couch and chair that I loved. It was the week between Christmas and New Year's and there wasn't a lot of bidding going on. Got the chair, couch and a coffee table that I have plans to restye - for 2 bucks each! It was five minutes from home to pick up and we slipped it right in the POD in the driveway that is filling up with boxes. I couldn't believe it! Our goal is to have NOTHING in our home that isn't thrifted. Last night a friend helped me bring home a dining table that I love and plan a really wild restyle of. Again - 5 minutes from home. I plan on starting to do You Tube videos called Granny's Vintage Gypsy - Living Lightly On The Earth. My motto is "We don't inherit the earth from our ancestors - we borrow it from our grandchidlren." Let's give them a better life by reusing, revamping, recycling, redecorating and keeping stuff out of the landfills. Remember - that chip on that vase can always be turned to the back!! Take it home and love it!

My best thrifting day, and year was after SAVERS came to Australia. I went in one day, collected a cart of vintage pottery, art, linens. I still have most of the pottery. Since I have found gold, emeralds, Art NOUVEAU enamelled pewter. Original art, stunning prints. Rugs, curtains, stunning fabrics.

All antique and most vintage furniture pieces are made from real wood, not particle or plastic, as many modern pieces are made today. So, I believe we all should salvage as much of this as possible. Living trees, that help filter the air we breathe have died for those pieces of furniture that are going to a landfill. We need to appreciate the workmanship and art all these fine things.

Hey Laura gal! I declare, sometimes what you pick up I'm like...🤔😬😖. But then when you get it home, clean it and style it up I'm like...😲🤯😍!!! You are so talented and have such a good eye for decorating. My style is different, but I definitely appreciate and enjoy yours. That's what makes thrifting so much fun, so many things and styles for all tastes. And, I have been searching for several months to thrift a specific kind of bookcase to go in a very specific area. I am thrilled to say I finally found exactly what I wanted at our local Restore this past Monday! We got it home, cleaned it up, used a touch up marker on some scratches and it looks great in the space! It pays to be patient and vigilant! Btw, you are so pretty and the video with you and your husband thrifting together on New Year's Eve was a joy to watch. You and Jesse are so sweet and it's easy to see the love, respect, and friendship between you. My hubs and I were HS sweethearts our Senior Year. We will be married 33 years this September. He is still my best friend as well as the love of my life. We love going thrifting and antiquing together. I have a feeling that you and Jesse will still be doing this together when you celebrate your 33rd anniversary and beyond. 😉😊 Take care. Blessings from The Bluegrass State💙🐎🎻🪕🌾🙏🫶

Hi Laura! Fellow Portlander and Antique dealer/collector... The lamp you described as Art Deco with the light and dark varied woods is called in the trade "Marquetry lamps" - you can see them listed on ebay, Etsy, and online sellers under that name. A lot of people will say they are mid-century rather than earlier Art Deco so more 50's and later. I saw a while back you had a striped bowl - that was done in the same way. They aren't inlaid - they take strips of contrasting wood and alternate them - then when glued up and turned on a lathe, it gives you the look like your lamp and that shallow bowl. Also, the wave chest is classic 1910's-1930's era - probably English and it is made out of Oak - classic Edwardian to beginning of Art Deco period. Cool stuff as always!! Take care!

I really admire the way you research the history behind your found items and your willingness to share that knowledge with the people who follow you. In the 60's my father furnished our victorian with items from auctions, estate sales, and "junk" shops. It was an education and he was big on researching what he found. I have learned so much from you and have decided you're never to old to change things around. Thanks to you MCM furniture, lamps, pottery and have become so much fun to find and put in my house. When I add an item I donate an item so hopefully people will be able to use what I have enjoyed for years. You are an inspiration.

Swede here! Fun fact about Swedish glassware, it's almost illegal to take off the original sticker from them. 😅 I always do anyway, I'm not a fan of stickers, but it's super common amongst Swedes to never remove them. When they have to wash the item, they're always super careful about not getting it wet and accidentally removing it lol. cray-cray in my opinion. 😵

Dear Laura, I found you “by accident” about a month ago. You are sooo fun and I love your videos. Since finding you, I have clicked on other thrifters. Their videos are sub par compared to yours! Love your music and your information and enthusiasm! My mom and her friend went thrifting all the time. It was their jam, however they usually only bought clothes and shoes. When she passed away my sis and I donated it all back except her thrifted evening gowns that I gave to a relative who is a talent director, she was happy! So, I always used the goodwill to go get farm clothes for the grandkids! Hahaha. I had no idea about thrifting to resale! So I decided to see what my area had, not having too much hope. My first day out I found four pairs of cool shoes and leather boots, a neat vintage jacket for Christmas parties, Levi’s for $1.50 like new, and a Mikasa crystal bowl! Gha! I was hooked! Next I found a silver plated cream and sugar set from the 20’s! It’s so neat! Also found some designer handbags, and I love using the Google search, but I’m afraid to buy to much of these because I can’t tell the fake ones. BUT my real purpose is to stage a house we are getting ready to sell, using only thrift pieces!!! I will send you pics when I get it done. It will be my first staged sale. This is why I love your staged finds so much!! They are so appealing and beautiful. Also, I’m a blue and green girl myself, so I love almost all your finds. I doubt I will ever be a an on line seller and compete with you, however I will not be buying as much new stuff for my wardrobe and my home from now on! I’m a recycler and this is just the next level! Keep up the good thrifting and videoing! I’m lovin' it! Your friend from Missouri, Betty Jean

I used to have a hammered copper apron sink. When something got into it that would upset the patina I would use a rag and dawn dish soap to scrub out the bottom evenly then use olive oil to coat the bottom. Left for a couple of days the color would come back up.

I actually LOVE Brasso! It will take plating off, so I only use it when that is my intention (it works great for if I have a gold over silver piece that has mostly worn off in a not-so-good way). Or, when something is a solid metal like copper or brass. And if you don't put wax on afterwards, a new patina will develop pretty quickly. Plus it as pretty inexpensive, as far as liquid polishes go. I also love copper, so many times I will rescue a piece of vintage jewelry that is too far gone as far as the overlaid finish, by taking it down to the base copper - Brasso is, for me, the best for this.

You could add a little teal paint rub n buffed on that copper planter. I did it to drawer pulls that I painted copper…my grandmother whispered to me your secret for removing tarnish using lemon, baking soda and steel wool. Guess it looked authentic enough.

Great finds - we don't see things like that around here in my part of New England in thrift shops because most people don't buy them to begin with. The carved tagua, aka vegetable ivory nut shakers are awesome - that material was popular for sewing items and also clothing buttons. Very labor intensive to process the nuts to prepare them for molding, carving, or turning so they stopped using them. Paris was ahead of us in the 1860's then tagua became popular in the US during the 1920's. Enjoyed seeing what you got and you did a great polishing job too with that planter!

I'm in northern Sweden, and I basically only have access to two small Red Cross charity shops in two tiny towns, so the pickings are usually slim, but the past year has been really bad, I have hardly been able to find anything. Fingers crossed for better times! ^_^

The shakers you found are also called vegetable ivory. There are beads and old sewing egg thimble holders made from it.

Well, I live in the Pittsburgh area and that’s debatable!😂Laura’s Goodwills seem so much bigger and cheaper. I’ve found some fabulous finds- don’t get me wrong but I also say it’s all about the luck of the thrifting Gods!haha. Hit or miss, but the hunt is always fun. Always more enjoyable when you can walk out with at least something in your hands tho!❤

Hi Laura! That beautiful iron lamp is called a working or a reading lamp! It would have been placed behind or to the side of a chair or loveseat, then the person could read or knit & have plenty of light! Great find!! As for a shade, some fabric ones or even a glass one would work! Enjoy your haul! And thanks for letting us go with you to treasure hunt!!🥰😊❤️
