Hi Shawn Woods - I purchased this trap to catch a rat digging under my garage (urban setting). I used peanut butter wrapped in a small piece of paper towel on the hook so they would have to tug it a little and not lick it off. Got two in 3 nights! Using a trail cam I know there is at least one more to capture. Thank you for this product review, these rats have been outsmarting me as they avoided my other traps, ignored my smoke bombs, and turned their noses up at RatX poison. Thanks!

Rats will sometimes lift the rear flap and escape. Wiring it closed is needed for full security. Once escaped that particular rat is not going to be easy to recapture. Have also had one (at least) not be far enough into the trap to be caught, or it sprang back when the door closed, resulting in it being hit on the bum and dragging the trap a little before departing the scene, Got that on video, wouldn't have believed it or known what had occurred otherwise. And these traps are good at catching a rat by its tail, as it is poking out the door when they spring. That's not pretty as they splice it with the door springs. A piece of wire wire about the diameter of the bar wires wrapped around the lower door frame will enable their tail to be kept with the rat in the trap, not stuck in the door. Or a stick about the same diameter laid in the door so the door can't close 100%. Experiences from catching rattus rattus. With the rear flap door unsecured have only once caught a double of 2 rats, it's efficacy isn't good or that doesn't happen often. For multiple rats, more traps on that site.

I really like this trap. The wire is so close that birds don't get in and steal the bait (like the squirelinator). Plus the trap door on the back allows smaller ground squirrels to get in after the bigger ones have set off the main trap. I lost a few because I forgot to set the lock bar, but I generally catch 2-5 a day with this trap. Thanks Shawn!!!!

If you don't want a live catch, I recommend electric rat zapper (I think the brand is rat zapper). Kills superfast and kills anything from mice and rats to squirrels. For mice tho, it bbq them a bit, and it might smell like burned hair after the catch.

Interesting mechanism; I wondered about that space where the door closed down on the rat’s tail. I also wonder if the top rod mechanism might limit where you could place the trap; it wasn’t clear if that external rod would flip upward when the door closes. If you tried to tuck the trap underneath a shelf, for example, that might be of concern. The “back door” would be helpful with critters roaming about in pairs or larger groups.

I just got this trap yesterday to try and catch some squirrels that have been going after a fig tree that grows near our house. I put the trap on the roof right where they like to jump over to the tree. Came out this morning and I caught a rat. Impressed at the fast action, even if it didn't get my intended prey. I need to put a camera up there when I reset to see what other visitors I'm getting. The trap is well-made and was very easy to set.
