I worked in Geek Squad during their decline. I was one of the last agents to receive Apple's training which allowed me to work on their machines. Bottom line is the in store agents are not authorized to fix things anymore. I'm not saying the Apple training is the only way to learn to fix things, but it did help me. If you have the warranty, they'll send it to a repair center. If an agent offers to fix it in store, he is going rougue. If anything goes wrong, he'll get in trouble and the store will generally leave you high and dry.

A while ago my Dell laptop was experiencing the blue screen of death when inserting my SD card. I did everything possible update drivers, trying Linux to read SD card, updating the bios. Since I tried everything possible I took it to Best Buy and used my protection plan to get it fixed. They insisted that it was a virus even though I was running Linux and told my they will charge $100 on top of the $300 geek squad plan I paid when I bought the laptop. I insisted that it was a hardware problem and made multiple trips to the store trying to convince them to repair my laptop. At they end the agreed to send it to their repair center and if the computer was ok they would charge my $40 for shipping (wasting their time). When I got it back they replaced the motherboard ($400 part covered by insurance) and the computer ran normal. Geek Squad takes advantage of people. Back then I was around 13 years old and they thought they knew more than me. I learned my lesson when Circuit City’s Fire Dogs took advantage by selling us $300 for antivirus and spyware installation.

@@tok33n14 There's no way you can get a _fully working_ *4K* screen for 40$. It's like saying I bought a new i9 9900K for 100$. Not gonna happen. I disagree, my customer service experience has always been this bad. My last purchase at BestBuy was for a head unit for my car. I bought a refurb unit. It arrived missing knobs and buttons, I know its a refurb but can they at least check to make sure it looks like the picture on the box? I figured no big deal, take it to the store and they say they'll take care of it. Refurbs aren't available so they exchange for a new unit. But it isn't in store so they have to order and have it delivered to my house. No big deal. A week goes by and I don't have anything. I try to check the status online and it keeps showing pending (or something to that effect). Check with online support and they say it happens sometimes, give it a day or two. Give it another week still nothing. Head to store. Frontline CS sees what I see and doesn't know what's going on. Cue talking to manager. 15 minutes later they figure out that it was discontinued and out of stock at the time of ordering but for some reason the order went through and got stuck. They offered to exchange for something else. No thanks, I'll only take so many fuckups. The only reason I went is because I had a gift card, too many bad experiences in the past. I'll just go back to buying Netflix or Steam giftcards when someone gets me one, they spend too much time trying to sell me a phone instead of getting their shit straight.

My uncle bought a harddrive at BB as they had a great deal on a massive 512GB drive (yeah, it's been awhile :P ). He wanted to move the data from his 2 smaller drives on to the larger drive and still keep his 2 smaller drives as backup drives in the same machine. They told him it'd cost about $200 for the labor. Fortunately he mentioned it to my other uncle (his younger brother) and me before he went and did it. He watched us do the software move using an imaging software in the first 10mins, then we walked away. He asked what was up. We said, now we wait, go eat lunch, watch some TV. It'll take about an hr to transfer. "That's it?" yup. He then realized he almost got screwed because they also said they'd have the machine for about a week to do the transfer. There was a job opening for BB Geek Squad and several ppl said I should apply. I said Nope! I have better ethics than they do. I will not screw over a customer by over charging and under delivering
