Bertello Pizza Oven fuel comparison part 2 (pellets)

Pellets produce a lot of smoke so let them cook down before putting a pizza on or it will taste very sooty! They provide a ton of rolling flames to heat the stone!
I decided to try 5 different fuels and see which is more efficient. Stay tuned for the other fuels to be uploaded and an efficiency comparison!

I leave the cover off the back until the smoke clears up. Takes less time that way.

If I put this oven on a plastic folding table, will the legs keep it high enough to keep the table from melting?

As you can see I have pieces of wood for insulating the plastic table, however, it never gets super hot under the oven. If you can get a 1/2" thick piece of wood, I would just as an added measure

Did you add in more pellets at any point? I haven't been able to keep a flame going for very long, definitely not 30 minutes. By the time the soot really subsides, it seems like the flame is just about out. Also just curious if you're going to post part 5 (wood) :)

I did add more pellets throughout the test. Do you have a fan to help push oxygen through the back? I found that a small USB fan helps a lot. Because of the density of the pellets they will burn quickly down to coals. If possible, I suggest getting some hard wood chunks to put on the pellets for longer flame burn. I stopped using pellets completely and just use wood chunks now.

@@dad.teacher.chef.2947 Thanks so much for making this video. With your help I was able to make this work! I think the fan is key. Quick question: what do you use for wood chunks, exactly?

@@timothyhuling749 I found some chunks at Lowe's for a good price. They are mesquite. I also have some apple that I cut and cured. Any hardwood will do the trick, happy cooking!

I got one of these for Christmas. Do you have issues with smoky taste using pellets? I also got the propane burner.

@Spencer Okey yeah same here, I don't even use much wood anymore though for the same reason. Biggest issue is pizza cooks fast on outside, sauce and top of crust isn't as hot.

What type of pellets did u use? Apparently u can get hardwood pellets for longer burn with less smoke.

Those are Pit Boss hardwood competition blends pellets. I've tried other hardwood pellets and still smoke a lot, good for quick heat though

I found that it got in the way AND a lot of the heat went up the chimney, rather than out the front of the oven. The open design of the Bertello allows the flames to draft across the top more.
