Berlin MARATHON 2022 | How NOT to Pace a Marathon

Спорт

The Berlin Marathon is one of the fastest marathon courses in the world. I was lucky enough to get a place through the ballot and despite a full calendar of races, I could not resist a chance at a fast marathon attempt in Germany.
So this is the story of an ill-fated and misjudged attempt at a fast marathon in Berlin. How did I do, well hopefully you'll watch the video to find out!

    You’ve done phenomenally, mate. I did Berlin too this year and was my first ever marathon, hit a wall at mile 18/19 and finished in 4:46:02... doesn’t matter though, was just about enjoying the experience. And yes, those plastic cups were horrific!!!

    I agree. The main thing is to enjoy the experience, especially with your first. More long runs over 20 miles will help stop you bonking at 18-20 miles. Don't be afraid to run a very slow marathon in marathon training. What's your next one?

    Subscribed! Great video and I could so relate to your race! I ran Berlin this year and decided to take it easy because I caught covid in August and I couldn't get in any proper long runs. Come race time, I started with a PR pace, finished the first half in 1:41 and struggled the rest of the way. I finished in 3:39 and I, too, wish I had enjoyed the race more because second half was a big time struggle.

    Well done. That would be a great time for me! Berlin was my first marathon back in 2005, so it was a highlight finishing that, also London marathon in 2015 as it took ages to get a place and was fantastic and got a PB there. Things switched totally to trail and mountain runs in the last few years, so finishing the UTMB CCC race in 2019 was just brilliant! Low point was dropping out of the TDS at Beautfort when i should have at least seen how I was getting to the dawn, the woods put me in a downer and at 1:50am and no support to give me a boost at that time I dropped out. Hopefully I can get a place in the first come first served race next year. You've done so many races this year, that's a great time for Berlin.

  • @FilmMyRun

    Hey Mark. Those woods before Beaufort were absolutely horrendous weren't they?!! I know Loyd (Purvis) struggled there too. Hopefully you can get to the end next year. I think it should be fairly easy to get in as long as you are on the ball with your entry.

    @@FilmMyRun The woods switched me to being very negative in the last stretch of them. With being close to Beaufort and the main meal there, I put off having energy bars and gels too long. Took me two hours to descent the mountain to Beaufort, so thik this was my downfall. Hopefully the TDS doesn't book up in a few minutes. Hopefully they give us a time for when it goes live. Good luck with your other adventures. Looking forward to UTS, looks ike it'll be a sell out, not many spaces left.

    Stuart Mills a sports lecturer in Brighton has won the Lakeland 100 a few times. One year he analysed all the London Marathon splits, 85% ran a slower 2nd half than the first half. Unless you are elite, if you plan to run a marathon at even pace you will not finish in your expected time.... If you want to run a 4hr marathon you need to get halfway in 1h, 50min...or less....

  • @FilmMyRun

    @FilmMyRun

    Жыл бұрын

    Yes, I know Stuart very well. He's also won the Beachy Head marathon many times. I think the reason the stats show that you can't run a marathon evenly paced is because the vast majority of people can't....or rather don't because they start too fast, as I did in this race. Over confidence or inexperience. However, experienced runners can do it and I have done it before. It's all about discipline. Thank you so much for watch. really appreciated. Haha, we were going to meet up for a coffee, but the three of us were there for such a short time we couldn't fit it in in the end. We see each other at a lot of events and because there are quite a few KZreadr runners in the South East of the UK we often cover the same events. But we all get on and we all have a different perspective to show, so it's all good.

    Been there done that, good that you finished without walking apparently ? Quick gear question, was that filmed with the DJI 2 as ? Great footage ! Does it have a portrait mode ? I see the background is pleasingly fuzzy at some points, like at 0:53 but not during the race ?

    Yes managed to avoid walking which is always nice. So, I was using both my iPhone in Cinematic mode and the DJI Action 2. During the race I only had the DJI camera on me and my friend Phina was looking after my phone. What do you currently use?

    @@FilmMyRun That Cinematic mode really produces nice results in selfie mode, hopefully some Android phones will add that at some point...For sports I use the Insta360 GO, quality isn't great but the form factor is amazingly convenient ! Can even be worn on a headband.

    I also went out too fast in Berlin and my second half was almost a +20 min positive split. Is it possible to run a marathon and not hit a wall because that always happens even if I start of slow?

  • @FilmMyRun

    @FilmMyRun

    Жыл бұрын

    Yes it’s perfectly possible to run negative splits and not hit the wall. You just have to be brutally realistic about your marathon pace…..AND you probably need to do more long slow runs. Most marathon plans will only have you running up to 20 miles once or twice. I think you probably need to do a couple of marathon distance training runs over the hills, really slowly…. Like 4-5 hours running to train your body to use its fast stores as energy and to become accustomed to long distance endurance

  • @FilmMyRun

    @FilmMyRun

    Жыл бұрын

    @@HenryWu1994 absolutely. But I am also primarily an ultra runner, so some of my long runs are actually races and can be 50-100 miles. So running 26.2 is not a distance which has any psychological fear for me. It’s just how fast I can go!! A lot of this is in your head. So as well as the physical benefit from running SLOWLY over longer distances than 20 miles, it’s also a psychological benefit because you no longer fear the distance.

    @@FilmMyRunmy issue is always my muscles get sore by mile 20-22 and my pace drops 1-2 minutes/mile atleast no matter if I start off slow or fast. It’s a little frustrating since this never happens during my 20 mile run(aerobics are never as issue since I can always breathe easily and be conversational during the marathon so that may indicate I am not exerting enough effort during my training). It seems like for you if you maintain an 8 minute pace during a marathon you’ll never hit a wall based on this video and your ultra running. My fastest marathon time is my half marathon x 2 + 48 minutes whereas I think it should be half marathon x 2 + 15/20 minutes. So I guess I need to increase mileage, incorporate speed and tempo workouts(which I never do and I think I may need to increase lactate threshold based on how my muscles always get sore towards the end), cross train, and perhaps hire a coach?

  • @FilmMyRun

    @FilmMyRun

    @@HenryWu1994 I think incorporating some speed work will definitely help. Intervals are awesome for that. Then yes just increase your weekly mileage by including some long slow runs and don’t be afraid to go over 20 miles in training!

    Haha yes strange I know. But here’s my thought process. Milk first thing in the morning. Contains good fats, protein and some carbs. Coke for later in the race, fast acting single molecule sugars for quick energy boost. It’s worked for me before in races where I have actually run well!! The problem in Berlin wasn’t fuelling, it was simply too many miles in the legs doing long ultra races over the summer….. and my determination to still try to run fast when I knew I shouldn’t and couldn’t!!!
