Beretta 80X Cheetah: The Compact Comeback
Ойын-сауық
When I first heard Beretta was planning to release an updated version of the classic 80-series Cheetah pistol, I was cautiously optimistic. I assumed they would add an accessory rail, which would undoubtedly spoil the clean lines and minimal bulk of the original design. And I was sure it would only be offered in .380 ACP, rather than the far more interesting (and fun) .32 ACP.
Turns out I was not wrong on either account. But once I got over that initial knee-jerk reaction, I warmed up to some of the more promising new features of the Beretta 80X and decided I had to try one for myself.

i think its younger people driving this primarily, striker fired is simply worse to shoot and a little finnicky too. metal guns can have just as high capacity and honestly can take up less space (strength to weight ratio) so why would i not just get a hammer gun like a normal person. the biggest thing tho is what if i get a light primer strike? having to rechamber any time the gun fucks up is just unacceptable.
Waxing nostalgic for the clean lines and aesthetic appeal of the older guns.

@@SUBARCTICPSYCHO I don't disagree with you, but I'd try to resist the temptation of dissing these smaller cartridges for self defense applications. Something less powerful than a 9 but more powerful than a 22 is always welcomed for those with ailments such as arthritis and those recoil shy shooters that aren't gonna put in the time at the range to practice like they should. Grandma and girlfriend come to mind. 380 has that center fire ignition system 👍so it's gonna be more reliable than a 22 if self defense is called for. 😉
Really hoping more manufacturers start making small DA/SA guns. A hellcat or 365 size DA/SA would be so perfect! Here’s to hoping the gen 2 CSX switches some things up.

Me too, it freggin hurts lol. But on the bright side, they’ve also done us a solid by providing a budget version of the 92X in which the only thing it’s missing is a threaded barrel (besides maybe random part specific details I’m unfamiliar with such as barrel type). But it gets the vertec grip, rails AND optics ready for those who want it and I saw it at Bass Pro for only $750! A standard 92FS or M9A1 can easily cost almost that much if you go to the wrong store lol
I would love to see the 81 come back. It’s a nice pistol, and I like th 32 round. It’s minimum capable, but still capable.

That little reassembly tip is so important, that drove me crazy, I discovered the fix by accident, pressing the barrel rearwards on my bench with one hand holding the gun and the other on the disassembly lever. Your tip about moving the lever forward first is just as simple and doesn’t require 3 hands.

another great review. well researched and well delivered. grateful.
Your old video on the 80 series is great and I recommended it in my video on the 84F. This is yet another great video. You just confirmed my concerns on the new blackstrap compared to the old one. And Beretta really needs to address the safety issue or at least make it better known that it can’t be carried “cock & locked”.
@LuckyGunner
Жыл бұрын
Yeah, a lot of the early reviews and SHOT Show press incorrectly reported that it could be cocked and locked and Beretta was not very quick to come out and correct them. I did receive an email about it a few weeks ago that went out to all their press contacts (I think in response to the TFB review, though others had incorrectly mentioned the cocked and locked capability for months prior). Adding to the confusion is the fact that the early guns didn't ship with a paper manual, just a QR code to view the digital version. Hopefully that's just because the gun is new -- a physical manual is kind of important (and I'd imagine their liability lawyers would agree). Anyway, the manual doesn't explicitly mention the "half safe" position, just to make sure the safety is "fully engaged." I think they could be more clear about that.
@TXGRunner
Жыл бұрын
Or, like the H&K, they could modify the safety so cocked & locked was a viable option. Apparently many, myself included, would like that option.
@BrowncoatNerd

Thanks very much for another excellent, informative and honest review of the 80X. I very much want to purchase a two tone one, but they are hard to find. Your reviews are high quality.
YES!! Life hacks are back as a bonus. On TOP of an always stellar vid. Thanks Chris.
The 80X is a welcome sight to me. As gun ownership widens, I think we’re going to have to realize that it is very common for average folks to find even 9mm to be a bit spicy, especially loads that are anywhere near the pressures of duty ammo. The only thing that lets down the smaller calibers is there are no good JHP and no FMJs that are widely available with match-grade quality control. I want a nickel-cased FMJ with the primers and powder charge consistency of HST
Nice summary. I appreciate your enthusiasm for this pistol. It's not for me, but I can see the appeal. It is a handsome gun, especially in this finish.
Chris - Thanks so much about reassembly of the 80X. I had the reassembly problem you demonstrated here. Wow! I couldn't understand the problem. I own and really like a number of Beretta pistols. I got my 80X back together by accident. Wasn't certain but after about fifteen minutes of trying I did something and it came back together. I've just tried your formula for reassembly and it works well. Thanks.
Always great reviewing
Whoever put together the opening did a bad ass job with the 8 bit / 16 bit parts
I'd love to hear an update after you get a red dot attached. Also, while a factory standard option for grip panels and front/back straps would be preferable, Rhett Neumayer made a makeshift Razorback-style grip for his Glock 42 using bicycle tubing and some rubber underneath to add shape. Something like that could be cheap to try out while we wait for a factory alternative. Finally, completely agree with you about a .32 ACP conversion. That'd be a dream to use, especially with a red dot. Thanks for always making such simple, direct, high-quality informative content for normal non-tactical folks!
Really enjoy these pistol reviews

Felt one in the hand recently at my shop. Came through as a transfer. Was actually incredibly surprised how good it feels. My significant other and I have been eyeballing this piece ever since it's announcement. I'm definitely interested and I'm sure she's going to want one for CCW as soon as she holds one as well. Really nice graphics / editing 👍🏼
Some people say the 80x is pointless but I think Beretta released one of the best CCW guns on the market. I see it as a little gun that wants to be a big gun, and to me that's perfect. You get a gun that allows a full grip, phenomenal DA/SA trigger, all metal construction, reliability and good capacity in its class without feeling like a boat anchor. 9mm is definitely more powerful but .380 is very impressive coming out of a 3.9" barrel. What I noticed the most is how fast and accurately I can shoot this gun compared to larger calibers, Follow up shots and accuracy are effortless from a draw while 9mm takes some thought and to me that's worth the reduced ballistic performance. I love my CZ-75 but when I want to carry something a bit lighter with similar operation I have a .380 that gives me 100% confidence in its abilities.

Thanks for the review. It's a welcome addition to your previous Cheetah coverage. I'd jump on a .32 conversion kit, especially with a "classic" grip adjustment. ( 81BB's are in short supply )
Have an old Beretta 82BB (single stack 32acp). Great little pistol. Agree with you about the arched backstrap -- need more real estate for getting maximum grip purchase with support hand in rapid fire. Also agree that 32acp is a fine choice in a blowback pistol. 32acp has easy to manage recoil and if you have to fire it indoors without hearing protection on you might have some hearing left afterward. Great review. Thank you.

That's a real beauty of a pistol.
When I saw this was coming out, I was really glad they rebooted it, but I had no desire to replace my 84. After seeing Chris review the trigger, I now want to sell my favorite pistol to buy this new one.
Ive had my 80X in all black for a coupl weeks now and its great. Changed out the grips for some Veloce LOK Grips, added a EPS carry, TRL7X and a threaded barrel from Allegheny Arms. Been carrying it in that configuration and it carries great. Beretta killed it with the 80X, best .380 on the market and no one can convince me otherwise.
Now THIS is a GORGEOUS pistol!

Check with Allegheny Arms, they do Cheetah conversions. And threaded barrels.
Beautiful gun. It’s got a few quirks in it’s manual of arms. I don’t want to have to think and remember what state my firearm is in. For me simple is better.
I was _just_ looking at this in the store yesterday and then this video comes up today. I take that as a sign I should buy it. And I just replaced my cabin air filter, it was dirty but not too bad.
Have both the 80x and the 84. The 80x takes some manipulation of the barrel in order for the slide release (disassembly) lever to work properly in both directions.
I can only hope that Beretta releases a more classic-looking variant of the 80x without the rail and with slightly larger sights instead of the optics cut. (The BB models are the high point of the 81-series guns as far as looks are concerned IMO.) Great video on the gun though, and I'm glad to see the Cheetah line back in the USA.
Good video thanks.
It's a cool gun and top notch quality! I'm a huge fan of the 81 series. Going to stick with my 84fs, 81fs, and 81BB. Glad that Beretta introduced it to keep the Cheetah series going. The modern features of the 80x don't appeal to me personally.
