    Thanks so much! There are all levels of hiking here, with mountains that line the entire Costa Blanca area. Anything just slightly inland will be less touristy, but the coastal hikes are worth walking, too.

    I am looking to retire in Spain coming from Canada but l noticed the rental prices to be as high as they are in Ottawa. The exchange rate also makes everything more expensive for us. But that is why renting seems to be more logical.

    Your channel is brilliant, it should have more viewers. If possible could you please do a video on language and the role of Town Halls in Spain, particularly levels of spoken English of natives in areas of admin, business, e.t.c. Thank you.

    Why? Do you want to go to Spain but you are not willing to speak Spanish or integrate into Spanish society?

    I would not presume that English is spoken to the extent that it is in countries like Denmark or The Netherlands where people know that their language is not widely spoken. Spanish is a major international language therefore you find that English is spoken mostly by people who need it for their jobs such as people working in the tourist industry in coastal areas. Once you move inland you cannot rely on people speaking English. I would definitely not presume anyone in local government or administration will speak English to an advanced level. People who move to Spain but don't learn the language will always be either cut off from the locals or dependent on translators. A little tale. I actually do speak Spanish and once in Alicante I had to go to the police station to report a crime. I remember to this day the positive reaction I got from the police when they realised I was able to do the process in Spanish. They gave me coffee and cake and told me how relieved they were because they had so many foreigners that they had to deal with in English and it always made them feel stressed out and nervous. I say this to point out that even those officials who are able to deal with you in English may not actually fully enjoy the experience and often find it stressful.

    @@barrysteven5964 Gracias por su comentario. It is as if a Spaniard goes to the UK and expects to be served in Spanish. It's just that these types of people don't help themselves at all......

    I think prices in Spain are increasing. What about comparing Portuguese prices to Spanish?

  • @traveltomoney

    @traveltomoney

    Yes, there definitely seems to be a rise in housing prices. In both Portugal and Spain, the large and most famous cities are where prices seem to have town the most. If you get into the smaller cities and towns, there are much more affordable options, even if those have risen slightly as well.

    Spent the entire month of February '23 in Calpe. So you know (we didn't) every European bicycle team comes to Calpe to train in Winter. Thousands. Maybe more. Winding narrow roads with packs? of cyclists with accompanying pace? cars. A bit of a timing problem if you're in a hurry, lol

    I do not think that my comment implies that foreigners would not want to learn Spanish / integrate into the culture. On the contrary it would help in giving viewers hoping to move to Spain a better idea of where and when specific language levels would be required.

    Es muy simple, si no puedes defenderte en un español básico ¿como vas a poder comunicarte sin depender de nadie? Porque nadie va a estar obligado a hablar tú idioma, pero sí que tú lo vas a estar para hablar Español en España. Siempre puedes ir a Francia 🤣

    I'm a Texan. I moved to the Benissa/Benitachell/Moraira area about 10 years ago. I knew a smattering of Latin American Spanish coming in and I expected to immerse myself in the language and culture. I was worried about my level of Spanish. My Spanish has improved over these 10 years. I've continued to take lessons and study with teachers, but I have never been immersed in the Spanish language while living here. When I moved here, there was a HUGE British population and there still is. A lot of people speak English or want to practice speaking English. It's not just English, though. There are a lot of languages represented to various degrees here. There are large Russian and Ukrainian populations, large Dutch and German populations. Where I live, I have a German neighbor (who lived in Venezuela for a long time), a British neighbor, Dutch neighbors, Belgian neighbors, French neighbors, another German family up the street. Where my wife goes to the salon, almost everyone is British. If you go inland, it shifts and most people speak Valenciano or Castillian Spanish.
